Protection

Your prayer for your son reflects the heart of a parent who loves deeply, and God hears that cry. He knows the love a father or mother has for a son, and Scripture uses that very love to help us understand His own love for us.

There is only one begotten Son of God, Jesus Christ, full of grace and truth. We are not sons in that same way. We become sons and daughters by adoption, brought into His family through faith in Christ. The Father showed the greatness of His love when He did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all. Because He has already given His beloved Son in whom He is well pleased, we can be confident that His care for those who belong to Him is sure. If God is for us, who can be against us. Christ Himself intercedes for us, and nothing can separate us from the love of God that is in Him.

That is why the truest protection we can pray for is that your son would be found in the Son. The witness God has given is that He has provided eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life. The blood of Jesus Christ that was shed cleanses from all sin, and to be covered by that blood is to be under the only shield that guards both now and forever. Pray that God would open his eyes if he is blinded by the enemy, set him free, and draw him to walk in truth as those who have received the commandment from the Father. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments, not as a burden but as a response to His grace.

Scripture often speaks as a father to a son, saying hear the instruction of your father and do not forsake the teaching of your mother. Wisdom calls a son to avoid the path of the wicked, to turn from it and pass it by, to let his eyes look straight ahead and ponder the path of his feet. It warns against those whose feet run to evil and against the flattering words that entice to sin. So as you pray for a hedge of protection around his body and mind, pray also for protection for his heart, that wisdom would guard him, that he would consent not when sinners entice him, and that he would walk in the way that leads to life.

The love you have for your son, even when he may stray or face danger, is a faint picture of the Father's love. David grieved deeply over his rebellious son and would have died in his place, yet God's love goes further. He actually did give His Son in our place, and His forgiveness is complete, removing our sin as far as the east is from the west. Like one who was lame and had no claim to sit at the king's table, we are invited to sit there for Christ's sake alone, forgiven and adopted.

So continue to bring your son before the Lord. Ask that the Lord would station His angels around him and keep him in all his ways, that no weapon formed against him would prosper, and that the schemes of the enemy who seeks to steal and kill and destroy would not prevail. Above all, ask that he would know and remain in Jesus, for there is safety in His presence that no danger can overcome.

Father, we thank You for Your love and goodness. We lift this son to You and ask You to surround him with Your protection. Cover him with the blood of Jesus, guard his heart and mind, keep his feet from the way of evil, and lead him to walk in truth. Draw him to Yourself, give him life in Your Son, and let him know that he is Yours. Keep him in Your presence day by day, for Your glory and his good, in Jesus name, Amen.
