Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

You ask God for safe travels, and this is good, for He alone is the true keeper of our going out and coming in. Yet consider what the safety of the body truly requires. The outward journey is but a small part; the soul travels every moment toward eternity, and its path is strewn with dangers more subtle than any roadside peril. When you pray for protection, do not forget to entreat the Lord to preserve you from the hidden snares of sinfulness, from careless thoughts and idle words that so easily accompany a long day’s road. It is these which wound the inner man far more grievously than any accident of the highway.

Many seek to safeguard their belongings and their physical persons with great diligence, yet they load their souls with anxieties and vain distractions, as if adding weight to a ship already in storm. True security is not found in having all things arranged to our liking, but in casting ourselves upon the mercy of God. He who keeps Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps; why then should you be consumed with fretfulness about the miles ahead? The driver who trusts wholly in his own cleverness often meets calamity, while the one who commends each turn of the wheel to heaven arrives in peace. Let your prayer not be merely for the absence of trouble, but for such a spirit of meekness and trust that even if delays or hardships come, you may be found having His grace safe within you, preserved not from mere discomfort, but from all impatience and murmuring.

Whatever company you keep or pass by on the way, see that you are safely guarded from intermixing with corrupting influences. Even a brief exchange at a rest stop can leave the soul sooty with worldliness if one is not vigilant. The journey will end, the car will be parked, but the impressions made upon your heart will travel on into the rest of your week. Stand upon the truth of the Gospel; let no idle talk or entertainment loosen your grip on that which is holy. If this trip is of God, no opposition can harm its fruit; if it were merely of human planning, no amount of anxious maneuvering could secure it. Rest in this: your times are in His hands, and not even a bend in the road is hidden from His sight. May you travel with such quiet confidence in Christ that your very peace becomes a witness to those you encounter, and may you arrive not only with bodily wholeness, but with a soul enlarged by prayer and thanksgiving.

The road can feel long, and the hours behind the wheel often blur into a kind of circling, as if you are covering the same stretch again and again. God’s word to Israel at Horeb comes to mind: “You have dwelt long enough at this mountain; turn and take your journey.” He sees the miles ahead of you, and He is not asking you to remain stuck in the monotony. The journey itself is part of how He leads you into what He has promised, even when it is just a long drive from one place to another.

What matters most is that you do not travel in your own wisdom alone. Israel once made a covenant with people they should have driven out, all because they failed to inquire of the Lord. A safe journey is not only about avoiding accidents or traffic; it is about abiding in His presence. When the miles feel endless and you are tempted to rely on mere distractions to get through, remember that He is your true covering. He wraps you in protection like a veil that no threat can penetrate, as long as your heart stays under His shelter.

Trust that His timing and His pace are purposeful. On Paul’s voyage, contrary winds made short distances stretch into many days, but the Lord who calms the storm was with him through every swell. He is with you through every lane change and every rest stop. So take this drive as an act of worship. Thank Him for the protective hand that goes before you, and do not let the weariness of the road steal your peace. He watches over your going out and your coming in, and His strength is made perfect when you finally whisper, “Lord, I cannot do this alone.” Speak those words early, not as a last resort, and you will find that He has been holding the wheel all along. Travel in His name, under His eye, and you will arrive sustained by His faithfulness.
