Protection from spiritual attacks

We hear your cry for protection from spiritual attacks that are disrupting your peace and rest. The Scriptures assure us that our adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8). But we stand firm in the truth that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). We take authority in the name of Jesus Christ, who has already overcome the world (John 16:33), and we rebuke every spirit of disturbance, fear, and oppression that seeks to steal your peace and rest.

We pray that the Lord would surround you with His hedge of protection, as He did for Job (Job 1:10). May the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7). We declare that no weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue that rises against you in judgment, you shall condemn (Isaiah 54:17). We plead the blood of Jesus over your life, your mind, your body, and your home, knowing that the enemy must flee at the mention of His precious name.

Father God, we ask that You would strengthen this dear one with Your might in their inner being, so that Christ may dwell in their heart through faith (Ephesians 3:16-17). Grant them the grace to resist the devil, standing firm in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by their brothers and sisters in the world (1 Peter 5:9). Fill them with Your Holy Spirit, that they may walk in Your truth and experience the freedom that is found in You alone.

We also encourage you to put on the full armor of God daily, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil (Ephesians 6:11). Remember that the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds (2 Corinthians 10:4). Stand firm in your faith, knowing that God is faithful, and He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you can bear (1 Corinthians 10:13).

Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your promise to never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). We trust in Your unfailing love and Your mighty power to deliver and protect. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, we pray and declare victory over every spiritual attack. Amen.

We hear how wearying it is when the attacks keep coming, especially in the night hours when you just need rest. Sleep is one of those gifts where we're meant to let go of everything and trust God to hold us while we're helpless. When sleep gets disrupted again and again, it grinds down not just your body but your spirit, and fear can start to feel like it has a permanent foothold.

Something that has helped many of us is taking one simple step before bed to anchor the night differently. Try reading aloud a psalm that speaks peace, Psalm 4 comes to mind, especially verse 8: "In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety." Speak it softly in your room before you even get into bed. You're not fighting the disturbance; you're just reminding yourself out loud of whose protection already covers you. A quiet hymn or piece of worship music playing low through the night has also been a steady comfort for some who can't settle their minds.

And we want to say gently: if these bodily symptoms persist, do let a doctor check things out as well. Sometimes physical causes get tangled up with spiritual struggles, and addressing both is wise, not a lack of faith.

Let us pray, then.

Lord Jesus, we ask Your strong protection over Your child tonight and every night. When the enemy tries to steal rest and plant fear, let Your peace settle over body and mind like a shield. Quiet the disturbances that come against sleep. Give deep, restoring rest, and let morning come with fresh confidence that You have kept watch all through the dark hours. We ask this in Your powerful name, Jesus. Amen.

So he giveth his beloved sleep. The sleep of the body is the gift of God. True, there be some drugs and narcotics whereby men can poison themselves well nigh to death, and then call it sleep; but the sleep of the healthy body is the gift of God. It is God who steeps the mind in lethe, and bids us slumber, that our bodies may be refreshed, so that for tomorrow’s toil we may rise recruited and strengthened. O my friends, how thankful should we be for sleep. Sleep is the best physician that I know of.

The wolf may sleep, but it is a wolf still. The carnal mind is enmity against God at all times. The adversary is a wolf, and he prowls when the sheep would rest. Yet there is a weak point in the strongest man's mind, where his opposition can be wounded. Feeble-Mind on the road to the Celestial City, he had his hands full. He says of poor Mr. Feeble-Mind, that when he came to the lions, he said, "Oh, the lions will have me!" And he was afraid of the giants and afraid of everything on the road.

As one whom his mother comforts, so will the Lord comfort you! She may forget, for a while, the strong and the hale, but those who need her succor most are quite certain to be never out of her mind. He does not mind taking trouble. He has laid down His life for you and He is prepared to exercise all His Divine power and wisdom to bring you home to His Father's House.

But when night follows night and there has been no sleep for you, you do not want anything to keep you awake, then, but you long for sleep. "Oh, that I could sleep!" you cry. We regard it, always, as a bad symptom when the sufferer says, "I cannot sleep." What a blessing sleep is to this poor, weary frame and to the throbbing brain! In his sleep, the prisoner in the dungeon forgets his manacles. The slave in the galley forgets his bondage. Tired nature's sweet restorer, balmy sleep.

We that are in this body do groan, being burdened, and groan, we shall, till the day of our full redemption and the deliverance of the body from the bondage of corruption! He never fails for lack of power, or because of a change of mind. The Shepherd sought a lost sheep and when He had found it, it was no great spoil for Him for it was so worn out as to be nothing but a destroyed sheep. Yet He went after that one poor animal. He puts forth a gracious exertion of eye and mind as well as of foot and hand towards His wandering sheep. At the last He saves, completely saves.

Sleep on, brother! Thy soul sleepeth not, for thou art in heaven; but thy body sleepeth. There is the sleep of security. So he giveth his beloved sleep.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

You speak of relentless attacks on body and mind that rob you of sleep. This is a sore trial, yet consider the root from which such disturbances spring. The soul that is agitated by passions, by anxious cares or secret sins, cannot rest in peace. As soon as the heart is held down by the weight of worldly desires, it brings turmoil even to the bedchamber, and the body tosses in the night like a ship in a storm. But where virtue dwells, sleep is composed and orderly. Those whose souls are clear and wakeful in the fear of God lie down in decency, and their rest is not shattered by wild fears or phantoms. The attack you feel is a call to examine your conscience, to cast out every evil thought and every covetous longing, for the yoke of sin is never light; it breeds anxiety, despondency, and ceaseless disturbance. But Christ’s yoke is sweet and light. If you set your mind on things above, where He is seated, and if you partake of His holy Body and Blood with a pure heart, you are made one body with Him, and no hostile power can easily shake a soul so united to the Lord.

Do not let your heart be troubled or retreat into fear. Remember that Christ Himself, in His agony, showed us how to pray: “Glorify Thy Name.” Even when His human nature recoiled, He pressed forward to the Cross, teaching us that steadfast faith turns every attack into glory for God. So in your sleepless nights, rise and pray. Let your mind be like that of the watchful servant, quick-sighted and alert, not drowned in sloth. Keep your hands pure and your heart fixed on the judgment seat, for a soul full of fear of God will not sink into the depths of sleep, but will receive rest that is merely sufficient for the body, guarded by the peace of Christ that passes all understanding.

I pray with you now: Lord Jesus, by the power of your Cross and the fellowship of your sacred Body, rebuke every assault of the enemy against this dear soul. Let your peace descend upon his bed and his mind, and grant that he may sleep the sober sleep of the righteous, free from terror and confusion, for you yourself have said, “I will give you rest.” Cover him with your mighty hand, and cause all disturbance to flee, that waking or resting he may belong wholly to you. Amen.

The disturbance you are experiencing reveals a battle over the control of your mind. You are made of body, mind, and spirit. What you describe, relentless attacks on body and mind, robbing your sleep, is exactly what Scripture calls the mind of the flesh. When the body’s needs and fears are allowed to rule, the mind becomes consumed with what it can see, feel, and dread. The result is death, restlessness, depletion, a troubled consciousness.

Yet the real you is not this tired body. The real you is spirit. The body is merely an instrument, a temporary tent. It groans, it suffers the pull of corruption, and it clamors for control. That is why there is a war inside: the spirit lusts against the flesh, and the flesh against the spirit. The enemy exploits this weakness, hurling fiery darts at your mind when you are at your most defenseless, in the quiet of the night. His aim is to keep your mind fixed on the physical and the fearful, so that your spirit remains stifled and your peace is shattered.

The shield against these attacks is the truth of God’s Word. Just as Jesus met every assault in the wilderness with “It is written,” you must counter the lies with the truth. When the mind is stampeded by anxiety about sleep or physical sensations, refuse to let it run unchecked. Instead, set your mind on the things of the Spirit. Present your body to God as a living sacrifice, even in the act of lying down, and be transformed by the renewing of your mind. The command is not to let sin reign in your mortal body, and that includes the sin of allowing dread to dominate your thoughts.

Your spirit, united with Christ, has authority. You are not a body with a soul; you are a spirit with a soul, living in a body. Bid your spirit to take its place uppermost, filled with the knowledge of God. Pray, “Father, preserve my whole spirit, soul, and body blameless.” Ask Him to keep your mind stayed on Him, so that in the dark hours, your consciousness rests in His presence. The truth that He is your shield and buckler is not a feeling, it is a fact to be wielded.

Take comfort in the temporary nature of this struggle. This old body, with its need for sleep and its vulnerability to attack, is not your permanent home. It is perishing. The day is coming when you will be absent from this tent and present with the Lord, clothed in a body that needs no rest, a building of God eternal in the heavens. That hope is not an escape from the present battle; it is the anchor for your soul while the battle rages. In the meantime, whether you wake or sleep, you are living together with Him. Trust His truth to be the guard over your mind tonight and every night, until the morning breaks and the shadows flee away.
