We join you in this beautiful and much needed prayer for protection from greed, and we thank God for the wisdom you have shown in bringing so many scriptures together to expose the deceitfulness of covetousness and to point to the true antidote.
Your request rightly begins with the warning of our Lord Jesus Himself when He said, Beware! Keep yourselves from covetousness, for a man's life doesn't consist of the abundance of the things which he possesses. Luke 12:15. We agree that a man's life is not measured by what he owns, and that greed is a subtle snare that can choke the Word and steal our affection for God. As you noted, the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. Mark 4:19.
We love how you have identified the antidote as wholehearted love for God. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. Mark 12:30. When our hearts are fully occupied with loving Him, there is no room left for the love of money, which as Scripture says, is a root of all kinds of evil. Some have been led astray from the faith in their greed, and have pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 1 Tim 6:10. And that love for God naturally overflows as you prayed, into rubbing off His love and mercy on our neighbors, for the second is like this, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Mark 12:31.
We also stand with you in praying the balanced prayer of Agur, Give me neither poverty nor riches. Feed me with the food that is needful for me. Prov 30:8, and in remembering that if riches increase, don't set your heart on them. Ps 62:10. For the earth is the Lord's, with its fullness; the world, and those who dwell therein. Ps 24:1, so all we have belongs to Him and is to be stewarded for His glory. We pray that we would be instructed as you quoted, not to be arrogant, nor to have our hope set on the uncertainty of riches, but on the living God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy, that we do good, that we be rich in good works, that we be generous and ready to share. 1 Tim 6:17-18.
We find great encouragement in your reminder that godliness with contentment is great gain. 1 Tim 6:6. The Lord has promised, Be content with what you have, for he has said, I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you. Heb 13:5. And we heed the final command you cited, You shall not covet. Ex 20:17, and Don't love the world or the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the Father's love isn't in him. 1 John 2:15.
We now pray together with you.
Father in heaven, we come before You in the precious name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, thanking You for Your Word that warns us and keeps us. We ask You to keep deception and lies far from us and to guard our hearts from all covetousness and greed. Teach us to love You with everything we are, with all our heart, soul, mind and strength, and to let that love purify our hearts and strengthen our faith and keep our conscience good, as it is written, the goal of this command is love, out of a pure heart and a good conscience and sincere faith. 1 Tim 1:5. Give us contentment with what You provide, and make us rich in good deeds toward others. Keep us from temptation and deliver us from the evil one, and let the love we have for You rub off on our neighbors so that they may see Your mercy and be drawn to You. Help us to seek first Your Kingdom and to use whatever You entrust to us to evangelize the lost and to honor You. We ask this in Jesus' name, trusting that You hear us and that Your peace which surpasses all understanding will guard our hearts and thoughts in Christ Jesus. Phil 4:7. Amen.
