Your prayer for the little ones is precious and it is heard. The Lord Jesus has shown how deeply He values children. He said their angels always behold the face of the Father and He warned that it would be better for a millstone to be hung around a person's neck than to cause one of these little ones to stumble. When you bring your children, their cousins, nieces and nephews, friends and extended family before Him, you are coming in line with His own heart.
We join you in thanking God for Jesus as the Good Shepherd. He does not drive His flock harshly but gathers the lambs in His arms and carries them close to His heart. The rod and staff that comfort us in Psalm 23 are His. He gives His angels charge over His people to keep them in all their ways, and the angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him. Those ministering spirits are sent to serve those who will inherit salvation. We ask Him to keep the bodies and minds of these children from the evil one and from evil people, and to keep their eyes and ears from what would defile them.
Part of that protection is the work of teaching them while they are young. Scripture says to train up a child in the way he should go, and that from childhood they may know the Holy Scriptures which are able to make them wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. God designed family life so that children would ask questions, what does this mean, why do we do this, and parents would then rehearse the mighty works of the Lord, how He delivered us with a strong hand and redeemed us. There was once a concern among the tribes that the Jordan River would become a dividing line and that in a future generation their children on the other side would be told you have no part in the Lord and would cease to fear Him. That same danger exists today when influences are allowed to remain that turn hearts away from God. Intermarriage with the values of the world, unchecked exposure to impurity and violence, will turn a heart aside. Therefore we must be intentional to keep the next generation from being cut off from the worship and fear of the Lord.
That training includes loving correction. Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of correction will drive it far from him. Yet even the most faithful parents know the ache of seeing a child wander. Not every child follows the path we hoped, and there are disappointments. In those moments we learn what it means to commit them completely into the hands of the Lord. The horse is prepared for the day of battle, but safety is of the Lord. We do not trust in our own strength or devices to keep them safe, but in Him.
We live in a time when children are greatly exposed and little in the culture protects them from filthiness and violence. They can encounter what harms the soul at a very early age. The prophet spoke of lifting up hands in prayer for the young who faint in the streets because of this. That is what you are doing, and it is right. We are to put on the whole armor of God, submit to God, resist the devil and he will flee, and stand firm in the authority Jesus has as the risen King to whom all authority in heaven and earth has been given. The church He builds upon the confession that He is the Messiah will prevail against the gates of hell.
So we pray with you for your household and all the children connected to you, for parents, aunts and uncles, babysitters and fellow believers who help watch over them, and for any young person who has already been hurt, that the Lord would heal and strengthen them. We ask that the Holy Spirit would shed the love of God abroad in their hearts and that they would come to know the breadth and length and depth and height of that love. For any who are weary and heavy laden, we ask that Jesus would draw them and give them rest, for His yoke is easy and His burden is light. We cast all our cares upon Him because He cares for us, trusting that He who is the Shepherd will stand and shepherd His flock in the strength of the Lord, and that they will dwell securely. He is able to work all things together for good according to the counsel of His will and for the furtherance of the gospel.
May the Lord keep you steadfast in intercession, guard your own heart from fear, and let you see His faithfulness to keep those who belong to Him. In Jesus' name, Amen.
