Have you not found out yet, I have, that the very anxiety which arises through your being in a difficulty, unfits you to meet that difficulty? In temporal things, if we learn to trust in God, we shall be happy. We are not to be idle; that would show we did not trust in God, who works up to now, but in the devil, who is the father of idleness. We are to trust God, acting in all prudence, and in all uprightness, we are to rely simply and entirely upon Him. This truth ought also to keep us from grieving too much over our losses and crosses in business. There have been times in the little business I have had to do for the Lord in connection with the ### and the ###, when the funds have been very short and sometimes we have run quite out. Yet we trust in the living God, the real God, a God with a great, warm, loving heart, an active, working, personal God who comes into the midst of this world. What time I am afraid, I will trust in You. But this is several stages beyond the first text: I will trust and not be afraid, which is far better! Trust your merciful God to help you. Only trust Him! Only trust Him now!

The mind easily becomes entangled in such cares, and we must be watchful. You speak of a pension, and this is a matter of provision for the flesh. The Apostle does not forbid such provision, for he says to Timothy, "Use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities." So too, seeking what is necessary for the body’s health and daily sustenance is not condemned. The fault lies not in the care itself, but in making that provision to fulfill the lusts thereof, going beyond necessities and kindling the flame of worldly anxiety into a furnace of despair.
Remember, the present life is a sleep, and the things in it are no way different from dreams. They that grow rich in a dream, when it is day are convicted of having been rich to no purpose. So too with this fear over worldly means. Before the day of our true waking departs, these dreams often fly away and the distress proves empty. Do not be like the disciples who were exceeding sorry when they heard of things they did not understand, even when the resurrection was at the doors. Their sorrow came from fixing their hearts on an earthly kingdom.
Spend your chief industry on the care of spiritual things. Seek first the health of your soul, and for the body, make provision only for its health, not for wanton excess. Prune away the excess of anxiety that goes beyond necessaries. When you have put on Christ, you must not be weighed down with manifold desires. If the pension is for daily bread and honest need, trust your need to God and do what prudence requires without the fever of worry. But if the fear is a soft and relaxed life flying away, then rouse yourself out of this sleep. Do everything that the soul may be healthy, and you will see that such earthly cares lose their sharp sting.
