Prideful people

We join you in bringing this burden before the Lord and we thank you for your concern for souls. Pride is a serious matter before God and it is at the root of so much sin and separation from Him. Scripture warns us plainly in Proverbs 16:18 that pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall. Again in Proverbs 16:5 we read that everyone who is proud in heart is an abomination to Yahweh and they shall certainly not be unpunished. In Proverbs 8:13 we are told the fear of Yahweh is to hate evil, I hate pride, arrogance, the evil way, and the perverse mouth.

We must take this seriously and we must also examine our own hearts, for none of us is without the temptation to pride. The Word tells us in James 4:6 that God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble, and in 1 Peter 5:6 we are exhorted to humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God that he may exalt you in due time. True humility is not thinking less of ourselves in a false way, but thinking of ourselves rightly before a holy God and counting others as better than ourselves as we are taught in Philippians 2:3.

We rebuke the spirit of pride that holds so many captive in the world today, the pride that says I do not need God, I am my own ruler, I know better than His Word. That pride leads to destruction and keeps people from repenting and receiving mercy. We pray that the Lord in His kindness would bring conviction and break hard hearts, that eyes would be opened to see the emptiness of self exaltation and the beauty of walking humbly with God.

Father we lift up all those in the world who are bound by pride and we ask You to have mercy on them. Soften their hearts and humble them by Your Spirit. Show them their need for a Savior and draw them to repentance. Help them to turn from trusting in themselves and to trust in Your Son. We pray also for ourselves that You would keep us from pride as we pray for others, that we would walk in humility and grace and love, speaking the truth with compassion. Let Your grace flow to the humble and let many be saved and transformed for Your glory.

We also want to gently point out that your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ. We want to share with you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and it is only through Him that we are saved. Jesus said in John 14:6 I am the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me. And in Acts 4:12 we read there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men by which we must be saved. If we confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in our heart that God raised Him from the dead we will be saved as Romans 10:9 promises. It is our prayer that everyone trapped in pride would come to know this saving name and bow the knee to Christ in humble faith while there is still time. We pray all these things together in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus Christ our Lord, amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

We appreciate you bringing this burden to prayer. It can be heavy to see how much pride shapes the way people treat each other and treat God, and it is good that you want to lift it to Him instead of just carrying frustration about it.

We have found it helps to remember what humility really is. It is not thinking poorly of ourselves or acting timid, but simply being honest before God about our dependence on Him and being willing to put the needs of others ahead of our own. Jesus showed us that best in how He served. Pride tends to isolate us and make it hard to hear correction or offer grace, while humility keeps our relationships with God and with others open and healthy. That is something all of us have to learn over time through reflection and honesty.

One simple way to keep praying for this is to make it personal this week. When you notice pride in conversation, online, or at work, pause and quietly bring that specific person or moment to the Lord by name, asking Him to soften hearts and to help you respond with a humble spirit in that same setting.

Father, we bring the pride we see in the world and in our own hearts to You. Work in us and in others by Your grace, teach us to walk humbly before You and to value others with kindness. Give wisdom to those who are hardened and draw them toward repentance and life in Christ. We ask this in Jesus' name, Amen.

Your request concerning those who are given to pride is a most needful one, and we join you in bringing it before the Lord.

Scripture warns us plainly that pride has its seat in the heart of man and its consequence is destruction. When destruction walks through the land it casts its shadow before it, and that shadow is pride, but when honor visits a man's house it casts its shadow before it in the fashion of humility. There is nothing into which the heart so easily falls as pride, and yet there is no vice more frequently and more earnestly condemned in the Word of God.

We do well therefore to pray not with a cold formality but with true concern for souls. That humility which lives only in the face is no humility at all. The throne of humility must be the heart, and it must be genuine, wrought by the Spirit of God. Humble men are mostly conscious of great pride, while those who boast of humility have but a false pretense. Let us ask the Lord to give to the proud a true sight of themselves, that they may see they are mortal and depraved creatures in need of sovereign grace, and that pride must give way.

We pray also for that repentance which is unto life. There is a carnal repentance which is of the flesh and gives no glory to God, but true repentance is the gift of God in the name of Jesus Christ, it gives God glory, it yields works meet for repentance, it makes a man weep and abhor his past life because of the love of Christ which has pardoned it, and it makes him avoid present sin because of the love of God who died for him. Where there is no repentance there can be no remission, but where there is godly sorrow there is full and free forgiveness through the finished work of Christ. The goodness of God is meant to lead men to repentance, not to harden them in defiance, and we may plead that goodness on their behalf.

Let us pray together then, that the Lord who resists the proud and gives grace to the humble would in mercy humble the proud, break the heart of stone, and grant that holy, healthy repentance which looks out of self to Christ and to Christ only. May He clothe them with humility of mind in serving the Lord, humility before the act, during it, and when all is done, to the praise of His grace. And may He keep our own hearts watchful, lest pride lift up its head in us.

We will remember this burden with you before the throne, asking that God would turn many from pride to humility, from death to life, through Jesus Christ our Lord, in whom alone is salvation. Amen.

Thank you for bringing this burden to prayer. We join with you in praying for those who are caught in pride, and for all of us, since every heart is tempted in this way.

Scripture and the wisdom of the church teach us that humility is the groundwork of all that is good. Jesus said, Blessed are the poor in spirit, and humility is the mother of virtues. Pride is the fountain of all wickedness. It lifts a person up to vainglory and arrogance and contempt for others, and it makes the heart careless toward God. As one wise saying puts it, the beginning of pride is not to know the Lord. When we forget who God is and who we are before Him, pride takes root.

We also know there are many false kinds of humility, being lowly toward the lowly but high toward the high. What God desires is humility of mind with all sincerity, in word and in action, toward rulers and toward the ruled, a humility that does not seek honor for itself and does not trust in uncertain things like riches or reputation, but hopes in God alone.

Let us pray together.

Father in heaven, we confess that pride dwells in every human heart and we ask for your mercy. You oppose the proud but give grace to the humble. We ask that you would open the eyes of those who are lifted up in pride, that they would come to know you as you truly are, holy, gracious and sovereign. Soften hard hearts, take away arrogance and vainglory, and grant the gift of true humility.

Teach us all to serve you with humility of mind, to consider others more important than ourselves, and to walk in the way of Christ who humbled himself for our sake. Where there has been boasting or contempt, bring conviction and true repentance, not the tears of pride and anger that do not turn to you, but the repentance that turns from sin and seeks your forgiveness through Jesus Christ alone. Help those who trust in wealth, honor, or their own strength to see how quickly those things pass away, and to place their hope fully in you.

Make us poor in spirit, that we may receive your kingdom. Guard us from both arrogance and flattery, and form in us a humble and contrite heart that loves what you love. We ask this in the name of Jesus, who is our only hope of salvation. Amen.

Thank you for sharing this burden for prayer. It is right to bring pride before the Lord, because Scripture treats it with great seriousness.

The Bible says there are things God hates, and pride stands at the head of that list. It also says pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall. God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. When a person or a nation settles into pride, arrogance and haughtiness, judgment follows. Ease can be dangerous in the same way, and often God allows disturbances and difficulties to purify us and keep us from settling into that self exaltation.

We see this pattern in lives in the Bible. Saul began with true humility and great potential, but pride entered and he began to exalt himself and turn away from God, and his life deteriorated before our eyes. David, though a king after God's own heart, was provoked in the area of pride to number the people, not out of need but to measure his own strength, and it brought tragedy to the nation. Moab is described as exceedingly proud and lofty, and for that pride came under God's judgment.

When we pray for prideful people, we should pray not only that they feel sorry, but that they come to true repentance. There is a great difference between sorrow and repentance. Many are sorry because of the consequences of sin, yet they continue in it. That kind of sorrow is of the world and it leads to death. God requires a turning away from evil, a forsaking of sin, a change of direction. Godly sorrow leads to that change and to salvation.

Saying I have sinned or I am a sinner is not itself repentance. Repentance is shown by turning from the sin and by fruit that demonstrates a new life. It is a death to the old way and a choice to live a new life in obedience to God. Scripture shows the contrast. Esau wept with tears when he lost the blessing, but his tears were not repentance at all. He was not seeking to turn from his wrong, he was seeking the blessing he had lost, and his tears were bitterness and anger toward his brother. Peter, on the other hand, when he denied the Lord and remembered Jesus words, showed a godly sorrow that led to a real change.

So let us pray that God would work in the hearts of those who are proud, that He would grant humility, that He would grant a godly sorrow that leads to a true turning from pride and self exaltation to serving Him. Pray that instead of a superficial regret, they would forsake pride and walk humbly before Him, and that He would give them grace to do so.

May the Lord hear this prayer and use it for His mercy. We ask Him to soften hard hearts, to humble the proud, to bring them to repentance and to new life through Jesus Christ, and to keep us also walking humbly before Him.
