Preyed for a rebellious teen

Anonymous

Beloved of All
My son, who is ### years old, is a rebellious teenager who keeps making bad decisions. He is drinking alcohol, smoking, and does not take his studies seriously. He is also getting into relationships with different girls. Please help me with your prayers so that there can be a positive change in his life. I do not want him to waste his life the way things are happening now. I want him to finish his studies and excel in life. I am asking for your prayers because right now, every time I pray, things seem to get worse. His behavior keeps getting worse, and whatever I pray for seems to be answered in the opposite way.

We come before the Lord with heavy hearts, lifting up your son and the deep concern you have for his life. The rebellion and poor choices you describe are indeed troubling, but we know that God is greater than any struggle, and His love is unshakable. First, we want to acknowledge the pain and frustration you must feel as a parent watching your son walk in disobedience. Your love for him is evident, and your desire to see him thrive is a reflection of God’s heart for His children.

The behaviors you’ve mentioned—drinking, smoking, neglecting his studies, and pursuing relationships casually—are not aligned with God’s design for his life. Scripture warns us in Proverbs 22:15 that "foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child," but it also reminds us in Proverbs 23:13-14 that discipline and correction are necessary: *"Don’t withhold correction from a child. If you punish him with the rod, he will not die. Punish him with the rod, and save his soul from Sheol."* This is not a call to harshness but to loving, consistent guidance that points him toward righteousness. We must also address the relationships he is pursuing. The Bible is clear that intimacy outside of marriage is sin, and pursuing multiple relationships casually is not God’s plan for his life. 1 Corinthians 6:18-20 says, *"Flee sexual immorality! ‘Every sin that a man does is outside the body,’ but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. Or don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s."* We must pray that he understands the sanctity of his body and the purpose of relationships—to honor God and lead to marriage with a fellow believer.

It is also important to address the spiritual battle at hand. When prayers seem to go unanswered or even appear to be met with greater resistance, it can be a sign of spiritual warfare. Ephesians 6:12 reminds us, *"For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places."* The enemy seeks to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10), and he will target young people to lead them astray. But we serve a God who is victorious, and we must stand firm in faith, declaring His power over every scheme of the devil.

Let us pray together now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts burdened for this young man. Lord, we ask that You would break the chains of rebellion in his life. Soften his heart to receive Your truth and Your correction. We rebuke the spirit of disobedience and waywardness in Jesus’ name, and we declare that he is not bound by the patterns of this world. Father, we pray for conviction to fall upon him—conviction that leads to repentance and a turning away from sin. Lord, protect him from the influences that are leading him astray, and surround him with godly mentors, friends, and examples who will point him toward You.

We pray specifically about his choices. Lord, we ask that You would remove the desire for alcohol and smoking from his life. Cleanse him from these habits and fill him with a hunger for righteousness. We pray for his studies, that You would give him discipline, focus, and a desire to excel for Your glory. And Father, we ask that You would guard his heart in relationships. Let him understand the value of purity and the sanctity of marriage. Bring godly women into his life who will encourage his faith, not lead him away from it.

We also lift up his mother, Lord. Give her strength, wisdom, and patience as she navigates this season. Help her to trust in You even when the circumstances seem bleak. Let her see that her prayers are not in vain, and that You are working even when it is not immediately visible. Father, we declare that no weapon formed against this family will prosper (Isaiah 54:17). We stand on Your promises and ask that You would turn this situation around for Your glory.

Lord, we know that salvation is found in no one else but Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12). If this young man does not yet know You as his Savior, we pray that he would come to a saving knowledge of the truth. Open his eyes to see his need for a Savior, and draw him to Yourself. Let him experience the transforming power of Your love and grace.

We trust You, Lord, and we believe that You are able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think (Ephesians 3:20). We declare that this young man’s story is not over, and that You have a purpose and a plan for his life. May he rise up to fulfill the calling You have on his life, and may he bring glory to Your name in all that he does.

In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

We encourage you to continue standing in faith, even when the circumstances seem to worsen. Remember that God’s timing is not our own, and His ways are higher than our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9). Keep praying, keep speaking life over your son, and do not lose hope. Galatians 6:9 reminds us, *"Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up."* Surround yourself with a community of believers who can support you in prayer and encouragement. Seek godly counsel if needed, and continue to model a life of faith and obedience before your son. God is faithful, and He hears your cries. Trust in Him, and watch as He moves in ways you never imagined.

We're right there with you, praying for your son. It's heartbreaking to see him making choices that are harmful to himself and his future. But remember, God is a God of second chances, and He's not done with your son yet. We're claiming 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 over him, "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God." Let's trust that God is using these circumstances to draw your son closer to Him.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
