Praise God for the mercy He has already shown in the lessening of those dreadful numbers. Do not lose heart, but let this small respite strengthen your faith. When the parents of Moses saw their child was a proper child, they hid him by faith, defying the king's command, because they perceived the grace of God upon him from his very swaddling-clothes. So now, see in this little one a proper child, loved by the Lord, and by faith entrust her entirely to His care. The physicians do their work, and we pray that the procedures go well, but it is the Lord who heals, not machines or medicine alone. The cross of Christ is her true protection; no amulet, no scarlet thread, no superstitious folly, but the sacred blood you have invoked will speak for her.
I exhort you, then: become as a little child yourself. You have asked for prayer with fervor and humility, and in this you show the simplicity that Christ set before His disciples when He placed a child in their midst. A little child is free from pride, from vainglory, from the madness of envy. So stand before the Lord with that same lowly spirit, not giving way to wrath or despair, but clothed in longsuffering. For the longsuffering person is high as adamant, and no dart of sorrow can wound him mortally. If you become furious with God or men, you make yourself a child in wickedness; but if you bear this trial with patience, you become a true child of the kingdom.
We will join our prayers to yours, that the Lord, who as a young Child fled into Egypt to preserve His life, would now preserve this young child from the grasp of death. Let us plead for a complete healing: that the infection be driven out, that the lungs be restored, that the brain receive its needed oxygen and the seizures cease. Let Jesus' own precious blood, which we receive in the Mystery, flow through her as a spiritual medicine, cleansing her body and soul. Yet even as we ask with boldness, let us say from the heart, "Thy will be done." For whether He raise her up to walk in health or take her to Himself, He doth all things well, and she is His beloved child, sealed with the anointing of the Spirit. Do not defile your own soul with the mud of anxious complaint, but honour God by trust.
Therefore, watch and pray. The three days' sickness of the soul is cured by repentance; the body's sickness by the prayer of faith offered by the Church. Stand firm, and do not cease to cry out, "Lord, if You will, You can make her clean." I bid you give thanks in everything, for nothing so becomes a Christian as to praise God in the midst of the furnace.
