The Lord who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light is near to the broken-hearted. When the blow falls suddenly and you stand beside an open grave, the soul cries out for comfort. And here is the unshakable truth: "This is my comfort in my affliction, for Your Word has quickened me." It is not the letter only, but the Spirit who brings life; and that life is the deep well from which all true consolation springs. The Scriptures, pressed home by the Comforter, work in us a patience which is not the mere gritting of teeth, but a holy waiting upon God, a childlike resting in the Father’s hand. In your grief, the God of patience and consolation will not fail you; He will give you the patience and the comfort of the Scriptures, and through them a hope that is an anchor of the soul, sure and steadfast.
I sorrow with you over the impatience of your well-meaning friend. He means to help, yet his anger ruffles the waters when you need them still. Remember your Master: a bruised reed He will not break, and the smoking flax He will not quench. The Lord deals gently, and He bids us be gentle. Pray for your friend; perhaps his own trials have made him short-tempered. Yet do not let his manner rob you of your peace. When the heart is already heavy, every hard word is an added weight. Take this trial as a whetstone for your own patience: the patience and the comfort of the Scriptures are for you now. Turn to the Word, and let the Holy Spirit quicken you afresh, so that you may be enabled to bear what grieves you, and even to answer softly.
As for those cousins who press upon you, the matter of the house is a snare. They wish to purchase, and their eagerness has become a harassment. The Lord is the God of order, not of confusion. Commit the house and all its business into His hands. If it is His will that you sell, He will make the way plain without compulsion. Do not be hurried. Wait upon God, and He will shield you. Say in your heart, I shall not be moved: this trial, too, belongs to my Father’s providence. The promise stands: "You shall forget your misery, and remember it as waters that pass away." The time will come when this pressure shall be but a memory, and you shall see that the Lord was guiding all things peacefully.
Your longing to welcome an adopted child is a holy desire. Where there is family prayer and care for His name, God delights to dwell. Go forward in faith, yet with a quiet heart, resting on His leading. He who sets the solitary in families will not deny you the desire of your heart if it be according to His will. Pray much, for it is little prayer that brings us low, and great prayer that lifts us up. And while you wait, let the comfort of the Scriptures fill your home, making it a sanctuary where a child may learn of Jesus.
For the two souls afflicted by the heat and waiting for papers to be signed, we cry with you against stagnation. The Lord rebukes the wind and the waves, and even paperwork cannot stand against His sovereign command. He makes a way to escape; with the trial He will not suffer you to be tried above what you are able, but will with the trial make a way, that you may be able to bear it. May those papers be released swiftly, and may they find their new home a haven of rest. For healing, we look to Him who walked in the furnace with His servants; His presence is enough to turn the hottest room into an arbour of peace.
Comfort ye, comfort ye, my people, saith your God. Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
