Beloved Servant
God, Thank you for this day. God, Thank you for in my life and in the life of those I know. Thank you. Jesus, When I was at ### one night, he took my cigarette and smoked on it, after he quit smoking for years, and so, that’s the reason, he’s had pulled away from me, and I asked him, I thought you don’t smoke no more, he said, he don’t and than, he took a puff, and that’s what he hasn’t been in my life for a while, and so, I pray that’s my lips where his lips are, so when he takes a puff I can get him back in my life, please, Jesus, Thank you. God, I know their are more important things to worry about. God, Thank you. God, I pray for all in this prayer group, in here. God, In the name of Jesus. Amen

We join you in giving thanks to God for this day and for His presence in your life and in the lives of those you know, for we know that every good gift comes from Him and we are called to give thanks in all circumstances as it is written in 1 Thessalonians 5:18. We hear your heart regarding this man at ### who had quit smoking for years and then took a puff from your cigarette, and how his pulling away from you has left you feeling distant and longing for him to return.

We want to gently speak to the way you prayed about your lips being where his lips were so that through the cigarette you could bring him back into your life. We understand the loneliness and the desire for closeness behind that prayer, but we must lovingly correct that God does not work through objects or through a kind of spiritual transfer from a cigarette, and He does not honor prayers that seek to control or draw someone back through such means. The Scripture teaches us that when we ask we must ask according to His will, and that you ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures in James 4:3, and that this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us in 1 John 5:14. We cannot use a cigarette or any object to bind another person to us, but we can trust the Lord with that relationship and pray for His perfect will to be done.

We also want to encourage you regarding this man. If he had quit smoking and has now taken a puff again, we pray for his health and for strength to overcome that temptation, for our bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit and we are called to glorify God in our body in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. We pray for him whether he is a friend, a family member, or someone you have feelings for, that God would work in his heart and draw him closer to Christ first and foremost.

If your desire for him to be back in your life is a desire for a romantic relationship, we want to encourage you in biblical principles. We believe that God designed romantic relationships to be a courtship between a man and a woman who are believers in Christ, with the goal of a lifelong marriage that honors God as described in Genesis 2:24 and Ephesians 5:31. We encourage courtship that is pure and self controlled, fleeing from fornication and from any intimacy outside of marriage, for the Scripture calls us to flee sexual immorality in 1 Corinthians 6:18. If this is a same sex attraction, we must lovingly say that God calls us to turn from homosexual practice and to pursue purity according to Romans 1:26-27 and 1 Corinthians 6:9-11. We do not know your situation fully, but we pray that any relationship you pursue would be one that seeks a godly spouse and a marriage that glorifies Christ.

We are thankful that you prayed in the name of Jesus, for it is only through Him that we have access to the Father, as Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me in John 14:6, and there is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved in Acts 4:12. Continue to come to God through Jesus with a heart that trusts His wisdom more than our own desires.

We also hear you say that you know there are more important things to worry about. It is true that God calls us to keep an eternal perspective, yet He also cares about the small burdens of our hearts and tells us in Philippians 4:6-7 not to be anxious but in everything by prayer to let our requests be made known to God, and His peace will guard our hearts. We encourage you to trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths in Proverbs 3:5-6.

We pray together now for you and for all in this prayer group as you asked.

Father in heaven, we thank You for this day and for Your mercy that is new every morning. We thank You for Your presence in our lives and in the lives of those we love. We lift up this dear one who is feeling distance and longing for restoration with this man. Lord, we ask that You heal any hurt, take away any superstitious thinking, and help us to pray according to Your will and not according to manipulation or control. We pray for this man, that You would bless him, draw him to Yourself, give him strength if he struggles with smoking, and guide his steps. We pray for our friend here, that You would give peace that passes understanding, guard the heart in Christ Jesus, and align every desire with Your holy word. If it is Your will for this relationship to be restored, restore it in a way that honors You, and if not, give grace to accept Your better plan and to seek a godly marriage if that is Your calling. Help us all to trust You more than our own understanding and to seek first Your kingdom. We pray for everyone in this prayer group, that You would meet each need, forgive our sins, and lead us closer to Your Son. In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen.

We are grateful you took time to give thanks, and to tell us honestly what is on your heart. It makes sense that you feel the distance so keenly and that you are looking for any way to feel close again, even remembering that shared cigarette.

Loneliness can make a small moment feel very big, and it is understandable to replay it and hope it might bring him back. Lasting closeness, though, grows through open, respectful conversation and time together, not through an object that passed between you. If you value this friendship, the steadier path is a kind, direct word when you next have a chance, while also giving him space to make his own choices.

At the same time, you do not have to carry this ache alone. We have found that regular time with caring people helps loneliness lift a little. One simple step this week could be to spend time with one or two trusted friends, a small group or a pastor, and let them know you have been feeling isolated. Just being known in community can bring comfort while you sort out what is next.

Father, thank you for the one praying who wants to give thanks even while feeling lonely. Draw near and give peace, wisdom and clear eyes for this relationship. Help them to feel your presence and the care of others around them, and guide their next steps with kindness and truth. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your words have come before us with a mingled thankfulness and longing, and we have carried them to the throne of grace. We thank God with you for this day and for His mercies in your life and in the lives of those you love, and we join you in prayer for all who meet together in this prayer group, that the Lord would bless them indeed.

You speak of a loneliness, of one who has pulled away from you, and of a desire to draw him back by sharing even the breath of a cigarette. This is a painful meditation, to feel left alone just when the heart craves fellowship. Our blessed Saviour knows this sorrow well. He was left alone, alone just when most, as Man, He needed human sympathy, and yet He said, You shall leave Me alone and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. Though friends forsake and lovers grow distant, the believer is not truly alone if the Father is with him. May you know that nearness, which is better than any other nearness the creature can give.

We must speak to you tenderly concerning this longing. What God intends to give us, He first sets us longing for, and prayer is the embodiment of a longing inspired of God because He intends to bestow the blessing. But we must ask, what are our longings? There are many who have great longings, but they are for things that are trivial compared with the longing to find God. The Psalmist did not say, I opened my mouth and panted for the return of a friend, but I opened my mouth and panted, for I longed for Your commandments. It is right to long ardently after holiness, to long after the promises and the precepts of the Lord, rather than to set the whole soul upon a person or upon a habit which cannot heal.

For there is an abundance of healing power in Jesus Christ and His salvation. Not only is His fruit sweet and nourishing, but the leaves, the little things, as it were, about Christ, are full of healing virtue. These healing leaves change the life blood, affect the spirits and make the nature other than it was before. You will not find healing for a wounded heart in sharing a cigarette, for that which harms the body cannot heal the soul. The healing balm is at Calvary. When Jesus healed the sick of the palsy He said, Son, be of good cheer, your sins are forgiven you. Pardon and healing were one. Healing and forgiveness are placed in happy conjunction and both are bestowed on the Lord's people.

Are you driven out of yourself, like the wounded soldier crying for someone else to carry you to the hospital of mercy, and longing for the aid of a mightier than yourself? Then be of good cheer, there shall be found a great deliverance for you. The Lord can heal the broken heart, and that healing is the work of God alone. Heartbreak for God is a sweeter thing than content in sinful pleasures, and though you can get no further than holy longing, be grateful for that longing, and let it turn toward Him.

So we pray for you, not that the Lord would bless a shared habit or an uncertain affection, but that He would bless you with Himself. We ask the Sun of Righteousness to rise upon you with healing in His wings, to forgive your sins through the blood of Jesus Christ alone, for there is no other name by which we must be saved, to turn your panting soul toward His holy commandments, and to give you the comfort of His presence, so that though you may feel alone, you may truly say, yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. May He purify your desires, guard your body as His temple, and teach you to seek first His kingdom, trusting Him with all other longings according to His perfect will.

We will continue to pray that you find God and are found in Christ, and that you know the leaves of the tree of life are for the healing of your soul. Amen.
