Your four years of crying to the Lord for healing have not been in vain, and your question comes from a place of deep pain that many of the Lord's people have known. Be assured that unanswered petitions are not unheard. God keeps a file for our prayers. They are not blown away by the wind, they are treasured in the King's archives, and there is a registry in the court of Heaven where every prayer is recorded. Your sighs and tears have not been fruitless, and delays in prayer must not be taken for denial. God's long dated bills will be punctually honored in His perfect time.
Though you should have seven years of unanswered prayer, yet do not suggest any reason to your mind that would dishonor Him. Settle this in your heart, as the Psalmist did, But You are holy. God is holy in His wisdom and holy in His love, and He does not withhold good from His children out of unkindness.
Does He love you. Oh yes, more than you can measure. Everything that God does to His people is all love, sometimes the love is a little disguised, but the love is always there. If He caresses, it is love. If He chastens, it is love. If He smiles, it is love. If He frowns, it is love, for God is Love and to His people nothing else but love, infinite, boundless, eternal and unchangeable. You are as much loved of God as if He had not another child to love. The sure proof is not whether the body is at once made whole, but the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Cross is the window through which the love of God is best seen. There He gave His Son to save sinners, so that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. If you have trusted Christ, you have the greatest healing already, the forgiveness of sins and peace with God, and that love can never be taken from you.
Why then would the Lord allow suffering to continue. Scripture gives us several reasons to consider prayerfully before Him. Sometimes unanswered prayer is a Fatherly chastisement or an admonition against sin harbored, and it calls us to humble self examination. Sometimes there may be sin even in the prayer itself, when we pray without fervency or without submission to His will. And sometimes the Lord is strengthening your muscles and tendons and sinews by the arduous exercise of waiting, that you may be finely useful in the future and that your faith may be made strong to comfort others. Only you who have been in sickness can tell of the Good Physician's power, and a true prayer from one who is near the gates of distress is a prevailing prayer, even when it seems to reel to and fro for weakness.
Therefore continue much in prayer, even when you do not yet see the blessing. Bring fervent, earnest petitions, not cold and formal, but warm with love to God and trust in His goodness. Ask for healing, for He is able to heal, and we will ask Him to do so. Ask also for grace to endure, for contentment in His will, and for a deeper sight of His love that your love to Him may abound in return.
We pray for you now, that the Lord in His mercy would lay His healing hand upon you according to His perfect wisdom, that He would give you strength for each day, sustain your faith, and show you more and more of His love in Christ. If it be His will, may He restore you to perfect health for His glory. Suffering is not a sign that God has forgotten you. The apostles themselves showed that their message was true by this very thing, that they endured tribulation and did not turn back. They would not have chosen a life full of dangers and anxiety for the sake of anything present if they had not been persuaded of a sure and good hope to come. In the same way, your perseverance through these years is not wasted. It is part of how God both proves and strengthens faith, and teaches us to look not only to what we have here but to what He has promised.
Remember also the woman of Canaan who came to Christ for the healing of her daughter. She cried out and was not answered at once, but she remained and importuned Him with great persistence, and in His mercy He granted her request. Your long prayer is seen by Him, and He honors importunity that clings to Him in trust.
Above all, remember that Jesus Christ Himself overcame death by suffering, and was raised from the dead. He knows your suffering from the inside, and His love for you is already made certain at the cross and the empty tomb. Many have been ashamed to believe how far His love would go, that He would suffer so much for us. That love has not grown less toward you now.
We do pray for your healing, and we ask God in His mercy to grant you health and relief according to His wise and loving will. Our circumstances cannot tell us whether God loves us. A fallen world and a suffering body will always seem to argue against His love, and the enemy will use that suffering to whisper that God does not care. Scripture does not try to prove God's love to you by pointing to health, ease, or outward blessings. It points to one place, and that place is enough so that you never need to doubt again. It points to the cross. There God showed His love by sending His Son to take your sin, to bear judgment in your place, and to make a way for you to be received as His own. That is giving love, divine love poured out, not love that depends on how you feel or how your body feels on a given day. When doubts rise, look there. The cross remains true even when your body still hurts.
Prayer is precious, and God does hear prayer, but its purpose is not to force our will upon God. Its purpose is to bring God's will to be done on earth as it is in heaven. Scripture gives this confidence, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us, and if He hears us we have the petitions we have asked of Him. That means we can come with great confidence to the Father in the name of Jesus, consenting for Him to do what He desires to do in us and for us. It also means that an answer that is not immediate physical healing is not a sign that He has not heard or that He does not love. His love allows what He allows, and He remains faithful to carry you and to work within what He has allowed.
Many have taken the words that you may prosper and be in health even as your soul prospers as a promise that God guarantees perfect health to every believer who asks. That was the personal wish of ### for a dear friend, a beautiful prayer for him, not a universal promise that perfect health will come if we pray long enough or with enough faith. There is a connection between the health of the soul and the rest of our lives, and God cares about both, but that verse was never meant to be used as a guarantee that suffering will end on our timetable.
My prayer for you is shaped by the prayer Paul prayed for believers, that you would be strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man, that you would be rooted and grounded in love, drawing nourishment from God's love as roots draw nourishment for a plant, and that you would comprehend more and more the breadth and length and depth and height of His love. Its breadth has no boundary, its length endures forever, its depth was shown when Christ humbled Himself even to the death of the cross for you. To know that love more deeply is the foundation for everything else in the Christian life. It is also what allows His love to be perfected in us, so that we can love Him and love others with His giving love, not with mere human effort.
