Chrysostom
Beloved of All
You ask for a good day at your work. Understand then what a good day truly is, for the world calls that day good which is free from trouble and filled with ease, but the faithful soul knows that every day is good when it bears fruit for the Master. To walk worthily of the Lord unto all pleasing, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God, this is the day you should seek. When you set your hands to labor, do it not merely to escape affliction, but as one who builds with gold, silver, and costly stones, for the fire will test each one’s work of what sort it is. The peace that the world craves flees from toil, but the peace of Christ stands firm in the midst of tribulation; He did not promise smooth paths, but He said, In the world ye have tribulation, that He might lead you to spiritual blessings, which are immortal, freeing you from earth and making you an angel among men.
Do not then ask only that no hardship meet you, but pray rather that you be made perfect in every good work to do His will, for this is that good and well-pleasing day in His sight. Even the angels give thanks for such a day, glorying not in our carnal ease but in our progress in virtue. If your work is seasoned with patience, kindness, and thanksgiving, then the day is blessed indeed, and you have peace not as robbers agree together, but as the heavens are united to the earth. Wherefore, give yourself to prayer that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom, and so walk that your labor becomes a sweet-smelling sacrifice. And forget not that the rest you long for at week’s end is but a shadow; the true rest is that table full of countless blessings, where there is no turmoil of soul, no sorrow, no wrath, but all is calm, all is peace. Set your hope there, and even your common days will shine with the freshness of good deeds, worthy of the Gospel. May the God of peace, who brought again from the dead the Great Shepherd, make you perfect to do His will, working in you that which is well-pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
