We hear your burden for your friend and we join with you in bringing them before the Lord, for we know how painful it is to watch someone we love who once walked kindly and faithfully now become hardened, self focused and unkind. You have discerned rightly according to Scripture, for it is written 2 Timothy 3:1-2 But know this, that in the last days, grievous times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant. What you are describing, vanity, self involvement, saying things are about them and not others, is indeed that spirit of self love that the Bible warns will grow in the last days, and it grieves us as it grieves you.
We also recognize that hurt, fear and vindictiveness toward an ex can so easily take root and harden a heart if it is not surrendered to God. The Word tells us Ephesians 4:31-32 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander, be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you. Vindictiveness and an unforgiving spirit are not from the Lord, and we must gently rebuke that attitude even as we have compassion for the pain underneath it. Vengeance belongs to God alone, as it is written Romans 12:19 Don't seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God's wrath. For it is written, Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord. When we hold onto hurt and try to repay evil ourselves, we carry a burden God never intended us to carry, and it makes us vain and self involved. We are called instead to humility, Philippians 2:3-4 doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself; each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others. And we are called to cast our fears and hurts on Him, 1 Peter 5:7 casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.
We are thankful that you are doing what you can do, which is to pray in the name of Jesus, for it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and it is only He who can soften a hardened heart. We pray that God will give your friend a new heart as He promises Ezekiel 36:26 I will also give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh.
We encourage you to continue to intercede with love and truth, speaking the truth in love when the opportunity arises, while also showing the tenderhearted forgiveness you long to see in them. Guard your own heart from bitterness toward your friend in their unkindness, and keep your eyes on Christ as your example. Keep inviting them back toward fellowship with God and with family and friends, not by excusing the self centered behavior, but by gently pointing them to repentance and to the kindness and love of Christ.
We pray together now for your friend.
Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift this dear friend to You. You see the hurt, the fear and the vindictiveness they are harboring, and You see how it has made their heart vain and self focused and unkind. Lord, we ask that You would convict them by Your Holy Spirit, soften their stony heart and draw them back to Yourself. Help them to release their ex and any desire for revenge into Your hands, to forgive as You have forgiven us, and to cast all their cares upon You because You care for them. Restore in them a spirit of kindness, love, giving, understanding and humility, that they may again walk as a person of God striving to please You. Guard their heart, for out of it are the issues of life, Proverbs 4:23, and let love be perfected in them again, for love is of God 1 John 4:7. We also pray for the one who intercedes, give them wisdom, patience, and strength to love well and to not grow weary in prayer. We ask all this according to Your will in the precious and powerful name of Jesus, our only hope and Savior, amen.
