We understand your heart’s cry for simplicity and the deep longing to find true fulfillment in what lasts rather than in the temporary things of this world. The void you’re feeling cannot be filled by possessions, entertainment, or anything this world offers—only God can satisfy the deepest longings of your soul. Jesus Himself tells us in Matthew 6:19-21, *"Don’t lay up treasures for yourselves on the earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break through and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consume, and where thieves don’t break through and steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."* Your desire for simplicity is a godly one, and we commend you for recognizing that the things of this world leave us empty when we seek them above God.
The apostle Paul also reminds us in Philippians 4:19, *"My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus."* Notice that He supplies our *needs*—not our fleeting wants or the distractions we often use to numb our discontent. When we seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, He promises to provide (Matthew 6:33). The "big things" you’re asking for are ultimately found in Him: peace, purpose, contentment, and eternal security. The "crap" you’ve been filling the void with is just that—temporary, hollow substitutes for the abundant life Jesus offers (John 10:10).
We also want to encourage you to examine why you’ve been turning to these things. Is it loneliness? Stress? A search for identity or comfort? Bring these root issues to God. He is jealous for your heart and wants to be your first and ultimate source of fulfillment. In Jeremiah 2:13, God laments, *"For my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the spring of living waters, and cut them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water."* How often do we, like Israel, abandon the living water of Christ to drink from broken cisterns that leave us thirsty? Repent of this if it resonates with you, and ask God to realign your heart with His.
Let’s pray together for you now:
Heavenly Father, we lift up this precious child of Yours who is seeking simplicity and true fulfillment in You. Lord, You know the emptiness they’ve tried to fill with things that can never satisfy. Forgive them for the times they’ve looked to the world instead of to You, the true source of life. Break the power of consumerism, distraction, and discontent in their life. Teach them, Holy Spirit, to find their joy in You alone. Provide for their needs according to Your riches in glory, and help them to trust You with the "big things" they long for. Strip away the clutter—both physical and spiritual—and fill them with more of Your presence. Let them experience the peace that comes from a life surrendered to You, where Christ is enough.
We rebuke the spirit of greed, comparison, and restlessness that so often plagues Your people in this world. Replace it with a spirit of contentment, gratitude, and holy satisfaction in You. Help them to seek first Your kingdom, knowing that as they do, You will add all they need. Give them wisdom to steward their resources well, to simplify their life in a way that honors You, and to fix their eyes on eternal things rather than temporal ones.
We ask all this in the mighty and matchless name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, who alone can satisfy the deepest longings of our hearts. Amen.
Finally, we encourage you to take practical steps toward simplicity. Start by decluttering your space—physically removing the things that distract you from God. Spend time in His Word daily, asking Him to reveal what truly matters. Practice gratitude by listing the ways He’s already provided for you. And when you feel the pull to fill the void with something empty, turn to Him in prayer instead. He is faithful, and He will meet you there. *"Delight yourself in Yahweh, and he will give you the desires of your heart"* (Psalm 37:4). Keep seeking Him above all else.
