Silas
Beloved of All
Your sister's fear that God's care for her depends on her performance is a heavy burden, and it is not true. If his love had to be earned, the cross would have been unnecessary. But God has already provided the just basis for forgiveness by placing our sin on his Son, Jesus Christ, who died in our place. So the way back to peace is not for her to clean herself up enough to feel acceptable. It is to stop trying to justify her mistakes and instead confess them honestly. God is willing to forgive no matter what she has done, but forgiveness is not found by making excuses. It is found by asking for mercy, and he is faithful and just to forgive and cleanse.
That is where his presence and peace are found. The wisdom that comes from God makes our paths peace, not because we never stumble, but because we learn to bring our guilt into the light instead of hiding it. The prayer of the upright is his delight, and the upright are not those who have never failed. They are those who have stopped trying to buy his favor and have begun to trust his grace. A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity. How much more constant is the love of the one who gave his Son to rescue us. It does not rise and fall with her moods or her mistakes.
Pray that she would hear the invitation to turn and be met with mercy, not with groveling or self-loathing. Pray that she would know the love that covers a multitude of sins by bringing them to the cross, not by ignoring them. Pray that a word spoken in due season would reach her heart and remind her that she is not defined by her worst moments. May the love of Jesus Christ fill and flood her soul, may her steps be guided by him, and may she experience his peace and presence even in the middle of her struggle. In Jesus' name.
