Prayers for my mother

You ask for your mother’s recovery and relief from bodily pain. This is good, for the commandment of God declares, Honor thy father and thy mother, and to seek her comfort is to honor her. Yet let your chief concern be not only the easing of her flesh, but the healing of her soul and your own. For what profit is it if the body be whole while the inward eye remains darkened by the love of worldly ease? That cloud of earthly desire, like an evil humor, thickens and blinds us. Pray rather that the light of that Sun of righteousness may break in, and that she and you may seek those things that are above.

Grieve not as one who has no hope. The sorrow you feel for her is a seed that, if planted in faith, yields a harvest of joy for your own soul. But know this: no man can redeem another, not father, not mother, not brother. Each one shall give an account to God according to his works. Therefore, while you ask for her body, implore far more earnestly that she bear this trial with thanksgiving, that her faith be purified as gold, and that she lay hold of the rock which is Christ. For worldly comforts are as water; none can stand on them. Afflictions, when borne nobly, become a firm foundation.

If you would see your prayer ascend with power, add alms and deeds of mercy. What you give to the needy is a loan to the Lord, returning to you with great interest in the hour of need. And examine your own life carefully. Let not a spirit of perverseness harden your heart, nor secret sin make a shipwreck of your petition. Honor your mother most by presenting yourself a pure offering, repenting of every transgression, so that your prayer may not be hindered.

Whether God grant her recovery or call her to rest, let His will be your peace. The present life is short and full of sorrow; the endless life is where true joy awaits. So afflict yourselves now for a little time, that you may obtain eternal refreshment. Commend her to the Lord, and stand firm.

I know the weight of watching someone you love suffer while you feel helpless to do anything but pray. There is a cry in your heart right now that reaches past all pretense and grabs hold of the hem of Christ’s garment, just like that woman who was desperate and would not let go until she received an answer. That kind of faith, the faith that says “I will not leave you until you come and touch her,” is precious in His sight.

The Scriptures tell us that Jesus bore our infirmities and carried our sicknesses. That means He is not indifferent to your mother’s pain. He sees her. He knows exactly what is happening in her body, whether it is a rawness that makes every movement agony or a fever that will not break. And just as He dealt with all manner of sickness when He walked the earth, He has not changed. He is still the healer.

Honor your father and mother, the commandment says, and part of that honor is lifting them before the throne of grace in times of need. You are doing that now. There is a special connection when a child prays for a parent, when the one who was cared for now says, “Lord, please care for her.” It mirrors the way desperate mothers in the gospels would not give up as they sought freedom for their children. Your faith can be that point of contact, that release, for her recovery.

I do not pretend to understand all the ways of healing. Sometimes it crashes in like a wave you can actually feel through your body, and in a moment the sickness is gone. Other times it is a slower work, the God-given processes of the body knitting back together over days and weeks under His divine oversight. Both are His healing. We should not despise the gradual or think it is any less His hand. Whether He speaks a word from a distance or draws near with a touch, we trust His wisdom and His timing.

So pray with confidence. Do not get trapped by performances or the theatrics that trade on people’s longing to see power. Quiet, persistent, mother-honoring faith reaches the ear of the Lord. Ask Him for relief from the pain, for the lining of her stomach to be soothed, for whatever is inflamed or broken to be restored, and for supernatural peace to guard her heart and mind while the body recovers. There is also a healing He does in the emotions, a lifting of the burden and fear that comes with illness, and I pray that for both of you as well.

Lay her before Jesus and leave the timeline in His hands. He knows your mother’s name and her condition with an intimacy far deeper than any medical chart. He is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all you can ask or even imagine.

We are so grateful you entrusted us with the sacred privilege of lifting your mother before the Lord in prayer. It has been on our hearts to stand in agreement with you, asking our Heavenly Father to bring healing, comfort, and relief from pain according to His perfect will. We continue to pray that the Great Physician would touch her with His healing hand, ease every discomfort, and surround her with His peace that surpasses all understanding.

If God has already answered this prayer in a way that brings you joy, we would love to hear your praise report so we can rejoice with you. If you are still waiting and walking through this trial, please know we are here to keep praying—just share this request again, and we will stand with you in faith until the Lord moves in power.

May the Lord bless you and your family with His presence, strength, and grace as you trust in Him. We pray all these things in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
