Tree Of Life

Disciple of Prayer
I am in a twenty plus year common law marriage. We exchanged vows privately before God, and have referred to ourselves as husband and wife. We raised his four children together, built a god fearing home and life together. The state in which we live considers us married legally, and if we were to divorce it would have to be done through the court system. Six months ago my husband told me he no longer wishes to continue our relationship, and hasn't considered me as his wife for a period of time. We still live together, sleep in the same bed, buy things together, eat together, go places together, etc. He plans on leaving, but never has set a date to do so. He has prayed to Yeshua and received confirmation that we are not aligned. He speaks of finding his soul tribe and believes that this season of our lives has ended. He has become cold and distant and refuses to pray with me, for me, or our marriage. I have tried to remain patient, allowed him to have space, and to not pressure him. I have prayed in the blood of Yeshua for his heart to soften and to restore our marriage. I feel a calmness and peace with each of my prayers. My prayers of restoration are answered with such clarity that things will work out and to remain positive and patient. My husband says his prayers are answered with we were never married and to walk away. I would like prayers for clarity on what God wants for our marriage. Thank you.

We hear your heart and we lift you up before the Lord with deep compassion, for you have honored a holy covenant for more than twenty years. What you describe is not simply a relationship but a marriage. You exchanged vows privately before God, you have referred to yourselves as husband and wife, you have raised children together and built a home together, and even the state recognizes you as legally married. In the eyes of God this is marriage, for Genesis 2:24 says a man will leave his father and his mother and will be joined to his wife and they will be one flesh, and Matthew 19:6 says what therefore God has joined together, don't let man tear apart. Mark 10:9 confirms this same truth. You are his wife and he is your husband, and to say you were never married is not true and does not align with Scripture. We gently but firmly rebuke that idea, for it attempts to dissolve a covenant that God has established.

We also must address what your husband is speaking over your marriage. The language of finding his soul tribe and that a season has ended and that God has told him to walk away does not align with the Word of God. God hates divorce as Malachi 2:16 declares, and His will for marriage is lifelong faithfulness and reconciliation. Ephesians 5:25 calls husbands to love their wives even as Christ also loved the assembly and gave himself up for it. To become cold and distant and to refuse to pray with you, for you, or for your marriage is not the love of Christ, and 1 Corinthians 7:10-11 commands that a wife not leave her husband and a husband not leave his wife, and if there is separation, to remain unmarried or be reconciled. A confirmation that contradicts Scripture is not from the Lord, for 1 John 4:1 tells us to test the spirits whether they are of God, and Jeremiah 17:9 reminds us the heart is deceitful above all things. The calmness and peace you feel when you pray for restoration is significant, for Philippians 4:7 says the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus, and James 1:5 promises if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God who gives to all liberally and without reproach and it will be given to him.

We are encouraged that you are praying in the name of Yeshua, who is Jesus the Messiah, for there is no other name by which we are saved and by which we have access to the Father. Acts 4:12 says there is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven that is given among men by which we must be saved, and John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. It is only through faith in Jesus Christ that we are reconciled to God, and we encourage you to continue to come boldly before His throne in that precious name, trusting not only for your marriage but for your own eternal hope in Him.

We see your patience and your willingness to give space and not pressure him, and that is honorable, yet we encourage you not to walk this painful road alone. Proverbs 15:22 says where there is no counsel, plans fail, but in a multitude of counselors they are established. We urge you to seek godly pastoral counsel and the support of mature believers and elders in your church who can come alongside you both, speak truth in love, and hold your husband accountable to his covenant vows. Continue to live in a way that honors God within your marriage, and we also encourage you to set healthy and prayerful boundaries while you remain under the same roof and even share the same bed, seeking wisdom from the Lord and from counselors about how to guard your heart and home during this time of uncertainty.

We join together with you now and pray for clarity on what God wants for your marriage, for we know His desire is for covenant keeping, repentance, forgiveness, and restoration.

We pray together in the name of Jesus, Heavenly Father, we come before Your throne of grace and lift up this dear wife and her marriage to You. Lord, You see more than twenty years of faithfulness, of raising children, of building a God fearing home, of vows made before You. We ask You to bring clarity that comes from Your Word and Your Spirit, not from feelings or from worldly ideas about soul tribes and seasons. Soften her husband's heart, Lord, remove the coldness and distance, convict him of the holiness of his marriage covenant, and draw him back to love his wife as Christ loves the church. Help him to turn from deception and to seek You with a humble and repentant heart. Give this wife Your wisdom and strength, guard her with Your peace that surpasses understanding, help her to trust in You with all her heart and not lean on her own understanding as Proverbs 3:5-6 teaches, and acknowledge You in all her ways so You will direct her paths. Restore, Lord, what the enemy seeks to destroy, and let Your will be done in this marriage for Your glory. Help them both to hear Your voice clearly and to obey Your Word, and let this home be a testimony of Your redeeming and reconciling power. We pray for healing, for unity, for forgiveness, and for a renewed commitment to the lifelong covenant of marriage between a man and a woman as You designed it. We trust You to work all things together for good for those who love You according to Romans 8:28. In the mighty and holy name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, we pray, amen.

We hear how painful this in-between has been for you. More than twenty years of vows, raising children together, and building a home, and now living side by side while your husband says he feels distant and is considering leaving without setting a clear direction. It makes sense you would feel both the calm you describe in prayer and a deep ache for clarity.

We understand you are hearing one sense of peace as you pray for restoration while your husband describes a very different sense of what he believes God is saying. When two people who love God sense such different directions, it can leave the one waiting feeling unsettled and unsure what faithfulness looks like day to day. Clarity often comes not only in private prayer but also as we walk with wise, steady people who know us and can help us hear God without pressure or hurry.

One gentle next step that may serve you well is to invite one trusted pastor or mature counselor to walk with you consistently, even if your husband is not willing to join at first. Having someone who knows your story can help you sort through practical boundaries while you still share a home, care for your own support and daily needs, and discern next decisions with wisdom rather than having to carry it all alone.

Father, we lift this dear sister to You in Jesus' name. We ask You to draw near to her in this lonely waiting, guard her heart with Your peace, and give her clear wisdom for each step. Show her how to love well without losing herself, and lead both her and her husband toward Your will in Your time. Amen.

Your cry for clarity has been heard and has been carried before the throne of grace, and we join you in seeking the mind of the Lord in this heavy trial.

Twenty years of vows before God, of raising children and building a home, is no light thing in the sight of heaven. What you describe is not a casual bond but a covenant, and the state itself recognizes what God has joined. Our Lord has said, What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder. The revealed will of God concerning marriage is plain, that it is a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, to be kept in faithfulness until parted by death. While many of God's purposes concerning the future are hidden from us, there is a revealed will which we must not violate, and we are to judge every impression, every feeling of peace, and every supposed confirmation by that revealed Word.

You and your husband both speak of answers in prayer, yet they seem to stand opposed. Here we must remember that as surely as God's will is the axle of the universe, so His will does not contradict His Word. He will not whisper to one to keep covenant and to another to break it. Feelings of calmness, and language of finding a soul tribe or of a season ending, must be weighed not by the current of human opinion, which will bear you the wrong way if you yield to it, but by Scripture. The search for a tribe of souls is not the language of the covenant, and coldness of heart is not the fruit of the Spirit who came to change the human will and make men willing in the day of His power.

We do not pray that God would bless a departure from His covenant, for we cannot ask Him to set His seal upon what His Word calls unfaithfulness. Rather we pray that He would work in both hearts to will and to do of His own good pleasure.

Let us pray for you now.

O Lord our God, who alone saves through the blood of Jesus Christ, Yeshua the Messiah, we come to You confessing that salvation is of Your will and that the preservation of Your people rests upon Your will. Look upon this daughter of Yours who feels forsaken and perplexed. Grant her not only a sense of peace in prayer, but true clarity according to Your Word. Guard her heart from deception and from leaning upon impressions alone, and give her grace to walk uprightly, for no good thing will You withhold from them that walk uprightly.

We pray for her husband, that You would soften what has grown hard and turn what has grown cold. You have promised to take away the heart of stone and to write Your law upon the heart of flesh. If he has wandered, Lord, turn and look upon him as You looked upon Peter, that his heart may break and be restored. Make him willing where he is now unwilling, for You are King, having mercy on whom You will have mercy. Bring him to love his covenant again and to honor the vows made before You.

We pray for this marriage, that if it be possible, there may be perfect restoration. You have said, I will betroth you unto Me forever, and You can make a broken bond as though You had not cast it aside. Yet we submit all to Your sovereign will, asking not that our will be done, but Yours. Teach this dear one to say always, If the Lord wills, and to feel it in her soul, knowing that all things are under Your regulation and have an appointed place in Your plan.

Give her wisdom for each day while you still dwell under one roof. Grant her counsel from faithful pastors and from the church, that she may not walk alone. Keep her unspotted from the world, pure in life and in hope, and strengthen her to do Your will whether by restoration or by patient endurance. Let her find her treasure not in ready answers but in Your promises to pay, which never fail though they may tarry.

We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our only hope, who hears us and will answer not always as we desire, but always for our profit and for His glory. Amen.

Continue to seek the Lord in His Word, to pray, and to place yourself under the care of a faithful local church where elders can know you, counsel you, and walk with you through what is to come. We will continue to bear you up before the Lord.
