prayer

You have done well to cry out to God with such sorrow for your sins. This very anguish of soul, this sense of emptiness and bondage, is the first stirring of godly sorrow that works repentance unto salvation, a repentance that brings no regret. But let not this sorrow stop at words or tears. Esau wept, yet found no place of repentance, because his grief was not a hatred of sin but only of its consequences. True repentance is not merely to confess you have abused grace and tested patience, but to make such full use of the delay that you utterly amend what you lament. The mercies of God are not a license to linger in the same snares; they are a summons to rise and be set free indeed.

You speak of addictions to entertainment, comfort, television, and your phone. These are seemingly small masters, yet they bind the soul as surely as heavier chains. If you would overcome them, you must treat them not as trifles but as enemies. As a horse is not honored by a retinue of servants clearing its way, so a Christian gains nothing by surrounding himself with amusements that pamper the flesh while starving the spirit. The time you give to these things is time stolen from God, from prayer, from the care of your soul. Cut them off with a firm hand. Let there be days when you turn off the screen and open the Scriptures. Impose on yourself a voluntary fast from every comfort that has become a snare. This is not to earn forgiveness, Christ alone has paid the debt, but it is the fruit of amendment by which you show that you have truly repented.

Do not say it is too hard. The same grace that stirred you to pray will supply the strength you lack. Manasses filled Jerusalem with abominations and murder, yet by repentance and serious consideration he washed away all his defilements. There is no second baptism, but the spiritual bath of the Church, repentance accompanied by tears, confession, almsgiving, and a changed life, has mighty power to cleanse even one who has sunk to the very depths. Only do not deceive yourself that you can keep the poison and be healed. The spiritual emptiness you feel will not be filled by more entertainment, but by Christ formed in you again through travail of soul. Use the time of this delay to flee every occasion of sin and to seek the heavenly gift with a genuine purpose of heart. Then you will not merely lament your testing of God’s patience, but you will taste afresh the powers of the world to come and know the glorious liberty of the sons of God.

I hear a soul crying out for deliverance, and that very cry is evidence of the Spirit’s work in you. The spiritual emptiness you describe, the weariness with your own patterns, the sense of testing patience, this is not the mark of someone abandoned by God. It is the stirring of one who has tasted that sin brings sorrow, not pleasure. The enemy painted these things in beautiful colors: entertainment, comfort, the endless scroll of the phone. They promised fullness, but they have only deepened the emptiness. Now you are seeing the true colors. What once looked like a tree to be desired, you now recognize as a source of chains. That recognition is a gift. Do not despise it.

What you are wrestling with is not merely bad habits. The law of sin working in your members is a real, present force that seeks to bring you into captivity. You know the cycle well: the moment of indulgence, the hollow aftermath, the guilt, the resolve, and then the stumble again. You have felt that you were somehow alive, but the commandment came and sin sprang to life, and you died a little inside. But the law can only declare what sin is, it cannot free you from it. Thank God it does not end there. Another law is at work, one far greater: the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus. This is what makes you free from the law of sin and death.

The very source of your hope is found in the blood and the water that flowed from His side. Just as the blood of Christ was without the inherited pollution of sin, so His sacrifice is able to cleanse you from all sin, not some, not the small ones, but all. You asked for true repentance and to be set free from bondage. Understand this: freedom is not something you achieve by grit; it is something you receive. He that is dead is freed from sin. If you have been united with Christ, sin no longer has dominion over you. You do not have to be ruled by it anymore. The body of sin has been put out of business. But you must believe that this is true, even when your feelings scream otherwise.

What kills the consciousness of God’s nearness is sin. It isolates, it separates, and it leaves you feeling as though you are hidden from His face, just as Adam hid in the garden. This is why the wages of sin is death, not just a future event, but a present separation. But if you confess your sin, He is faithful. You have an Advocate. The isolation you are beginning to feel from the things that once comforted you, the discomfort in your own patterns, is meant to bring you to the end of yourself, that you might return to the fellowship. The goal is never simply punishment; the goal is restoration and salvation.

So cast away those things with urgency. Throw them out. Whatever leads you back into this misery, strip it away. Keep yourself from idols. Every time you reach for the phone or the screen to fill the emptiness, you are grabbing fruit from a tree that will only leave you with thorns and sweat. But when you turn to Him instead, you are drawing life from a different source. The truest response to His grace is not a calculated plea for a blessing, but praise that rises spontaneously from a heart that knows it has been delivered from a strong enemy. You were too weak for that enemy, but He drew you out of many waters. Walk in that deliverance, and the glorious fruit of righteousness will begin to grow where emptiness once reigned.
