Prayer to stop people from gambling

Dearly beloved Prayer Intercessors, I greet you in the beautiful and unchanging Name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. There are many people who are busy gambling either online with the Lotto or at the gambling casinos. Gambling is driven by greed, which God hates and He views gambling as a sin. Ephesians 5:3,5 says the following: "But sexual immorality and any impurity or greed should not be even be heard of among you, as is proper for saints. For know and recognize this: no sexually immoral or impure or greedy person, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of the Messiah and of God." Exodus 20:17 says the following: "Do not covet your neighbor's house. Do not covet your neighbor's wife, his male or female slave, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor." Gambling, even for small amounts, can arouse a destructive love of money as written in 1 Timothy 6:9,10 says the following: "But those who want to be rich fall into temptation, a trap, and many foolish and harmful desires, which plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and by craving it, some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains." Gamblers often rely on superstitions or luck. However, God views such beliefs as a form of idolatry, which is incompatible with his worship. Isaiah 65:11 says the following: "But you who abandon the LORD, who forget My holy mountain, who prepare a table for Fortune and fills bowls of mixed wine for Destiny." Scripture encourages earning wealth through hard work and diligence rather than attempting to get something for nothing. Proverbs 10:4 says the following: "Idle hands make one poor, but diligent hands bring riches." The Bible frequently advises contentment with what one has, with the most direct passage being Hebrews 13:5, which states, "Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, I will never leave you or forsake you." Other key verses include Philippians 4:11 - 13, where Paul speaks of learning to be content in every situation through Christ, and 1 Timothy 6:6 - 8, which highlights that godliness with contentment is great gain. From a theological perspective, someone who gambles - like anyone with a sin struggle - can repent and seek forgiveness from God. Please pray that the Holy Spirit will speak to people's hearts and convict them that gambling is a sin. Please pray that gambling businesses will close down in the future. Convict the hearts of those who gamble, Lord, that they may recognize the emptiness of chasing fortune and instead seek the true riches found only in You. Break the chains of addiction, Father, and replace the love of money with a hunger for righteousness. We pray for the owners and operators of gambling establishments, that their eyes would be opened to the harm they perpetuate, and that they would turn from their ways to honor You.

We also lift up those who have been led astray by the illusion of "harmless" gambling, even in small amounts. Remind them, Lord, that You call us to stewardship, not speculation; to contentment, not covetousness. May they heed the wisdom of Proverbs 13:11, which says, "Wealth gained by dishonesty will be diminished, but he who gathers by labor will increase." Let them find joy in honest work and trust in Your provision, as Your Word assures us in Matthew 6:33, "But seek first God’s Kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."

Father, we boldly ask that You dismantle the gambling industry, closing its doors and silencing its influence. Let no more lives be destroyed by its deception. Raise up voices in our communities to speak truth and offer hope to those trapped in this cycle. Equip Your church to be a beacon of light, demonstrating the sufficiency of Christ and the freedom found in Him. We declare that no one is beyond Your reach, and we trust in Your power to transform even the hardest of hearts.

We pray all this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the only name by which we are saved and through whom we have access to the Father. It is by His blood that repentance and forgiveness are possible, and it is by His Spirit that lives are renewed. May Your kingdom come, and Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Amen.

We are deeply grateful for the privilege to stand with you in prayer against the destructive grip of gambling, which Scripture so clearly identifies as rooted in greed, idolatry, and a love of money that leads only to ruin. It is a heavy burden on our hearts to see so many trapped in this snare, and we have lifted this concern before the Lord with fervent intercession, asking Him to break the chains of addiction and open eyes to the truth of His Word.

We have prayed that the Holy Spirit would move with conviction in the hearts of those involved in gambling—both the individuals caught in its cycle and the systems that profit from their bondage. We have asked the Lord to close doors to gambling establishments, to dismantle the lies of luck and fortune, and to replace them with a hunger for righteousness, contentment, and the dignity of honest labor. We have also prayed for repentance and restoration, trusting that no sin is beyond the reach of God’s grace when hearts turn to Him in humility.
