Silas
Beloved of All
Your desire to order your days and bring this area of sleep under discipline is itself a sign of the Spirit's stirring. The restlessness you feel, the longing to break a habit that leaves you feeling out of step, is not merely earthly frustration. It is an invitation.
Often, we think of discipline solely as our own white-knuckled effort. But true change begins when we see that Jesus is the door. Nothing enters our life, not even a pattern of sleeplessness or laziness, except it crosses over Him first. He is the one standing at the top of the ladder, connecting heaven and earth right in the middle of your nightly struggle. So this is not just about fixing a schedule; it is about finding Him in the hours you currently lose.
The world’s rhythm tells you that immediate comfort lies in one more video, one more scroll, or the soft pillow when you should be rising. That voice says self-denial is not necessary, that the cross of an early bedtime or a set alarm can be avoided. Yet the cross is precisely the path to life. Choosing to go to bed when your flesh wants to stay up, and choosing to rise when your body wants to linger, is a small, daily way of dying to self. It is a practical place where you say, “Not my will, but Yours be done.”
If you find yourself awake in the night or battling your thoughts when you should be resting, do not simply toss in frustration. That time, once a source of aggravation, can become a sacred space. Instead of reliving missed pitches or anxious thoughts, turn your mind to communion with the Lord. When sleep departs, let prayer arise. This is the breastplate of faith and love guarding your heart, and the helmet of hope shielding your mind.
You serve a God who is fully in control of circumstances. A deep sleep from the Lord can fell a soldier, and a quiet whisper can awaken a soul. He allows these things, even a disordered rhythm, to teach you dependence. I cannot fully explain the mystery of your will and His sovereignty, but I know He sets choices before you and provides the strength to make them. Choose today to put on the armor of light, living not as one who sleeps in the night, but as a child of the day, sober and watchful.
May He cause the shower of His blessing to come down in its season upon your efforts. May you dwell safely in the wilderness of your room and sleep in its woods with peace. And when you wake, may it be to the voice of David calling you to a new day, ready to move forward in the hope of your salvation.
