Prayer that the Fans of War will be CALMED

Your prayer for the calming of those who fan the flames of war is heard, and it is right and good to bring this burden before the Father in the name of Jesus Christ, through whom alone we have peace with God and access to His mercy.

You ask God to restrain the threats of nuclear weapons, to de escalate disputes among nations, to end wars and to protect farmers, crops and the food supply of the world. These are right prayers. Scripture calls us to pray for all people and for those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives, and to ask the Lord to restrain evil and to have mercy on a world that is often bent toward destruction. We join you in asking Him to calm the hearts that desire war, to frustrate plans for great harm, and to preserve life.

You also speak of signs of the last days, of fear, and of wanting to use time and resources to get prepared and to wake others who are not paying attention. This desire to be ready is wise, but we must understand what true preparation is.

The apostle speaks of having our feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace. That preparation is not first of all a store of earthly supplies, but a virtuous life, a heart made ready for God. As the Psalm says, Thou wilt prepare their heart, Thou wilt cause Thine ear to hear. To be prepared is to be at peace with God through faith in Jesus Christ, to walk in repentance, to be cleansed from sin by His blood, to live in holiness, humility, love and obedience, and to be ready to go out and share that gospel of peace with others. When we are at war with the devil and with sin, we are at peace with God. Do not fear as those without hope. The gospel is good news because the victory has already been won. When Christ was crucified, the prison was broken, the gates were shattered, and death was loosed. Therefore we need not be paralyzed by dread of what nations may do.

This does not mean we ignore danger or fail to be prudent. It is sensible to provide for our households, to work diligently, to steward what God has given, and to help our neighbors. But the greatest blot is not earthly want but sin, which no amount of outward washing can remove, but only tears of repentance and confession before God. Many fear the wrong things and do not fear what they ought. Let us fear sin and turn from it, and let us trust the Lord with all other fears.

Jesus taught that wars and rumors of wars would come, yet He told His disciples not to be alarmed, and He promised that for the sake of His elect those days would be shortened. If God so cares for His people that He restrains and shortens tribulation for their sake, how much more will He keep those who belong to Him now. He has not left the world without witness, and He still hears the prayers of His people for mercy on nations and for daily bread.

So how do we get prepared and help awaken others

First, prepare your own heart. Turn to Christ daily, confess sin, receive His forgiveness, read and obey His Word, pray without ceasing, and walk in a clean and loving life. Cut through the cords that entangle you with excessive love for earthly things, so that you can love heavenly things more fully.

Second, be shod for movement. Be ready to speak the gospel of peace to family, neighbors and fellow believers. A church is awakened not by alarm alone but by the steady witness of a life that shows the peace of Christ and by loving, truthful words that call others to repentance and hope.

Third, redeem the time. Do not waste days in anxious speculation or endless fear. Use time and resources to do good, to provide for your family, to give to those in need, to support the preaching of the Word, and to live soberly and watchfully as those who await the Lord.

Fourth, pray as you have prayed, and continue. Pray for the calming of warlike counsels, for the protection of farmers and of the harvest, for the provision of food for the needy, for the restraint of evil weapons, and for the advance of the gospel. Pray also for courage, that you and your church may not shrink back but stand firm in faith.

We pray with you now. Father, in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, have mercy on this world. Calm those who stir up war, restrain the use of terrible weapons, bring de escalation where there is tension, and bring an end to wars according to Your wisdom and mercy. Protect those who grow and harvest food, guard the crops and the supply that sustains life, and provide for all people. Take away paralyzing fear and give us clear minds to prepare our hearts before You, to live holy lives, and to share the gospel of peace. Awaken those who are sleeping and stir Your churches to watchfulness, prayer and love. Keep us faithful until Christ comes. Amen.

Your prayer reflects a right and burdened heart before the Lord, and it is good to bring these great fears to Him. The threat of war, even nuclear war, the disputes among nations, and concern for farmers and the food supply are heavy things, and Scripture does not treat them lightly.

The Bible traces wars to a deeper source than politics alone. They come from lusts that war within us. When the heart is at war with God, there is inner turmoil, and that turmoil spills over into strife with others. The wisdom of this world leads to fighting and division, but the wisdom that comes from above is pure and peaceable. It first makes peace with God, offering cleansing though sins are as scarlet, so they may become as white as snow, and then it brings peace within, so we are no longer a boiling cauldron inside, and then peace with others.

Because of this, the first preparation God calls us to is spiritual. The beginning of true knowledge and wisdom is the fear of the Lord, and to fear the Lord is to hate evil and to depart from it. That is both the first step and the sum of a wise life. To walk in the fear of the Lord all day long is to consider the end of the path we are on. One path, though it may seem sweet at first, ends bitterly and goes down to death. The other path, the path of righteousness, leads to life with Him. When we have been cleansed from sin, we are then to live a consecrated life, with ears open to His voice, hands given to His work, and feet walking in His way, honoring Him with what He has entrusted to us.

You mentioned signs that point to the last days and the fear that can come with them. Scripture speaks of times when nations are at war and the world is shaken, and in that context God says to His people, fear not, for I am with you. That presence is the cure for fear. Though we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, we need fear no evil if He is with us. God knows the end from the beginning. He has always known all things, and He will make a full end of the nations in His own time and way, yet He will not forsake His own. Fear and faith cannot occupy the heart together. Where fear takes over, faith departs, and where faith and the remembrance of the Lord are strong, fear is driven out. For that reason we are told not to be afraid of sudden fear nor of the desolation of the wicked when it comes, for the Lord will be our confidence and keep our feet from being taken.

This shapes how we get prepared. Preparation should not be motivated by panic or by fear of the enemy. Fear often drives us to wrong reactions. We are to do what is wise and prudent, but not out of fear. Remembering the Lord, we act in faith. That means seeking Him first, departing from evil, living cleanly and faithfully before Him, stewarding our resources to honor Him, praying for those in authority and for those who suffer, and caring for our families and neighbors with calm diligence. Protecting food and providing for needs is right, but it is done best as an act of trust, not dread, asking God to guard what we cannot guard ourselves.

It is also right to long for others to wake up. The way people awaken is when they choose the fear of the Lord instead of despising wisdom and instruction. Many love knowledge but make it an idol, yet real knowledge begins with reverence for God. When we walk steadily in that reverence, loving what He loves and hating what He hates, our lives become a quiet testimony that can stir others, including churches that have grown dull to the signs around them.

So continue to pray as you have prayed, that God would calm those who stir up war, de escalate disputes, and in His mercy restrain the use of terrible weapons and protect the harvest and the food supply. And as you pray, ask Him to deepen in you that conscious sense of His presence, to keep you from wasting time in fear, and to guide you day by day into faithful, peaceful obedience. He is with you, and that is enough to cast out fear and to make your preparation wise and steady in Jesus name.

Yes, Lord -- no one knows the day nor hour but The Father -- but we sure can tell (and are seemingly supposed to be able to tell the signs of the times), Matt 16:3. Thank You in Jesus' Name
