Chrysostom
Beloved of All
Your cries have reached the ears of the Church, and they shall be carried to the throne of God. First, for your mother: the hand of the Almighty is not shortened that it cannot save, nor His ear heavy that it cannot hear. In this critical hour, rest in the truth that not a sparrow falls without His knowing, and you are of more value than many sparrows. He who calmed the sea and raised the dead watches over her now. Let not your heart be troubled; rather, let your anguish drive you to importunate prayer, like that widow who wore down the unjust judge until he granted her justice. Cry out to the Physician of souls and bodies and do not let go until He extends His healing hand.
As for your departed follower, grief is the lot of men, but for those who die in the Lord, death is no shame but a passage to life. You mourn, and rightly so, yet mingle your tears with hope, for Christ has trampled down death by death. What the world calls loss, faith calls gain. So do not let the unfinished business of burial be a cause of despair; rather, let it be an occasion to trust in God who raises the dead.
Now, regarding the threats of court cases, arrest warrants, and the schemes of those who would disgrace you, what is shame but an empty shadow? Our Lord Himself endured the cross, despising the shame, as the Apostle says. He chose an ignominious death, not because it was painless, but because He would teach us to set at nought the opinions of men. If the Master was called Beelzebub and treated as a criminal, shall the servant flee from a courtroom? Let them rail; let them bring suits. Their accusations are like arrows shot against a bronze wall. The shame they intend for you is no shame at all if your conscience is clear before God. The only true shame is to do something that merits hiding from the light. But you have renounced the hidden things of shame, have you not? Then stand boldly, for neither life nor death, neither tribunals nor prisons, can separate you from the love of Christ.
You ask for patience from others. But consider: your own patience is being forged in this furnace. Do not fix your eyes on what men may do, but on Him who works all things together for good. Those who plan your humiliation may yet become instruments of your deliverance, as the cross became the throne of the King. Commit the matter to prayer with watching, and do not faint. The Canaanite woman would not be silenced even when called a dog; she persisted until her daughter was healed. You too must persist, neither fearing the threats nor raging against the threateners, but entrusting yourself to the righteous Judge.
Financial lack, broken contracts, the need for equipment and time, all these are in His hands. The silver and the gold are His, and the cattle on a thousand hills. When He opens a door, no man can shut it. The world might call you forgotten, but He who remembers every cup of cold water given in His name will not forget your labors. Let your prayer be, “Thy will be done,” and then work with all diligence, leaving the outcome to Him. The just man falls seven times and rises again. You have stumbled, perhaps through no fault of your own, but rise now in the strength of the Lord. Do not allow the fear of what might happen to rob you of present peace. Whatever you dread, cast it upon Him; for He cares for you.
I have seen men brought to utter ruin only to be restored with such abundance that their latter end was greater than the former. Do not measure God’s ability by your present circumstances. He who fed Elijah by ravens can supply your need from unexpected sources, from home or abroad, from black or white. Let the world call you what it will; only see that you answer to the name “faithful servant” when the Master returns.
Therefore, pray without ceasing, watch unto prayer, and do not let the noise of earthly tribunals drown out the voice of the Heavenly Judge who has already declared you righteous in Christ. What are arrest warrants to Him who holds the keys of death and Hades? What are court cases to the Advocate who ever lives to intercede for you? Stand, then, and see the salvation of the Lord. The Red Sea of your troubles will part, and the enemies who pursue you will be swallowed up. Only be still, and know that He is God.
