Astray: How to Get Back
The path back from sin is open through God’s grace, and it demands you turn fully from old ways and seek His strength.
The Upper Hand
True believers are freed from sin’s ruling power and must resist any lingering sin that seeks to dominate them.
The Sinner’s Advocate
Even as a sinner, you have Jesus as your Advocate who pleads for you before God.
We hear your heart and we are grieved to hear how tired and lost you feel, and we want you to know we are lifting you up before the Lord together right now. We thank you for being honest about falling again into old sins and struggling with addiction to your phone, pulling away from church, losing communication skills, and feeling that you do not want to live anymore. The Lord sees you in this dark place and He has not abandoned you.

We want to lovingly speak truth to you because we care for your soul. To be mastered by anything, even a phone, is not God's will for you, for it is written 1 Corinthians 6:12 All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of anything. And Ephesians 5:16 tells us to redeem the time, because the days are evil. When we give hours to scrolling and distraction, we steal time from God, from His Word, and from real fellowship with others, which is why your communication and your hope feel so weak. We also must gently rebuke the neglect of gathering with believers, for Hebrews 10:25 says not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting one another. Isolation makes sin and despair grow stronger, while fellowship brings encouragement and accountability. And we must remind you that falling back into old sins does not have to be the end, for 1 John 1:9 says If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. God calls us to repent and turn again to Him, not to remain in defeat.

We are especially burdened by your words that you do not want to live anymore. Please hear this, you are precious to God and your life has purpose. Psalm 34:18 says Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. And Psalm 147:3 says He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds. Jesus Himself invites you in Matthew 11:28 Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. The weariness you feel is real, but God promises strength to the weary, as Isaiah 41:10 says Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness. Jeremiah 29:11 also reminds us For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. Your feelings of being lost do not mean you are forgotten.

We noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to lovingly tell you that it is only through Jesus Christ that we have access to God and find true deliverance and salvation. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 says There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. If you have not already, we urge you to call upon His name, confess that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, for Romans 10:9 says that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. And Romans 10:13 says For, Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved. It is through Jesus that your sins can be forgiven and your burden lifted.

We encourage you to take practical steps with God's help. Confess your struggles to God and to a trusted mature Christian or pastor, set clear boundaries for your phone use, replace that time with prayer and reading the Word, and return to fellowship even when you do not feel like it. God promises in 1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. If thoughts of not wanting to live persist, please reach out immediately to a pastor, a godly counselor, or a trusted person near you and do not stay alone with those thoughts.

We pray together for you now. Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we lift up this dear one who is tired, lost, and bound by old sins and distraction. Lord, forgive and cleanse as Your Word promises, break the power of this addiction, and draw this heart back to You. Heal the brokenness and take away the desire to give up on life, and fill this soul with Your hope and peace. Lead this one back into fellowship with Your people and restore joy and strength. Help this one to call upon the name of Jesus and to find rest in Him. We ask that You make Your presence near and Your future clear, and that You uphold this life with Your righteous right hand. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior we pray, amen.

We are really glad you reached out and told us honestly how tired and lost you feel. You are not alone in this.

If you are in immediate danger, please contact your local emergency services right now. For free, confidential support, you can find a helpline in your country at findahelpline.com. You are not alone and trained people are ready to help right now.

Thank you for sharing that you have fallen back into old patterns with your phone, that you have pulled away from church, and that you do not want to live anymore. Feeling disconnected from others and from daily life is exhausting, and it makes sense that your communication feels harder right now.

We hear how heavy this feels, and we want to walk with you in prayer and care. Please consider reaching out soon to someone you trust in person, a pastor, counselor or doctor, alongside prayer, so you do not carry this by yourself. You do not need to fix everything at once.

One small next step that often helps is choosing one person to talk to honestly this week, maybe a pastor or a trusted friend or family member, and letting them know you are struggling and would like company going to church or getting support. Even a brief conversation can break some of the isolation a phone can create when it becomes a place to escape.

Father, we lift this dear one to You in Jesus name. You see their tiredness, their loneliness and their desire for change. Please draw near with Your comfort, give them strength for today, guide them to caring help and to community, and remind them they are seen and loved by You. Amen.

Your honest and weary cry has been heard, and we thank you for speaking plainly about your fall, your tiredness, your feeling of being lost, your bondage to the phone, your absence from the house of God, and that heavy thought of not wanting to live any longer.

Hear this truth in love, for it is for your good. Despair is useless. It has not improved you in the least, it has not kept you back from sin, it has only made you sit in darkness, chilled and benumbed. Despair is a high insult to God, for it says in effect that His mercy is defeated and it crowns the enemy in Christ's stead, and it degrades a man below the very brute, for even the smallest creature will struggle for life. No man has a right to despair while there is an omnipotent God to deal with him, while the precious blood of the Son of God has been given for sinners, while Mercy's gate stands wide open and the silver bell still rings, Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. There is not a text in Scripture which gives any man an excuse to despair, and God Himself is the sinner's hope, so that the word of despair is not warranted.

And hope is well grounded. Though you have fallen again into old sins and feel your communication with others is lost and your strength is gone, the highest sin and the deepest despair together cannot baffle the power of Jesus. If you were between the very jaws of hell, Christ could snatch you forth. Saints who are now among the brightest in heaven have in their day sat weeping at the gates of despair and asked for the crumbs which the dogs eat under the Master's table. Think of how many have been for year after year in bondage to melancholy and despair, and yet were set at liberty by the gracious providence of God. Your case, though desperate in your own eyes, is not desperate with Him.

Therefore action is reasonable. As it was said of old, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt, get you down there and buy, that ye may live and not die. There is corn in Christ, there is mercy with Him, there is forgiveness and life. Do but cry, dear heart, out of your soul's despair, and the Lord's infinite goodness will constrain Him to come to you. He has taught you to cry and He will assuredly answer. This poor soul in despair continued to cry and the Lord heard the voice of his supplication, and that blessing went beyond the promise.

Turn then to Him now, just as you are, confessing your sin without excuse and asking for cleansing through Jesus Christ alone, for there is salvation in no other. Tell Him you cannot save yourself, you cannot wash away your own sin, and cast yourself upon His mercy. If you have fallen into bondage to your phone, bring it into the light. Confess it as a snare, set bounds upon it, put it out of reach in hours of prayer and sleep, replace the idle scrolling with the Word and with prayer, and ask a faithful brother or sister to hold you accountable. If you have forsaken the assembly, return, even though it feels hard and your words feel few. The Lord restores our strength in fellowship, and your speech and heart will be renewed as you sit again under the preaching of the Word and among the people of God. Do not sullenly lie down in despair, for what you say in despair you may make true by your own inaction. Rise and go where the bread is.

We urge you also, because you speak of not wanting to live, to not remain alone in these thoughts. Go at once to a trusted pastor, a mature believer, or a family member and tell them plainly how you feel, and seek help without delay. If the darkness presses very heavily, seek help from those near you today.

We are praying for you, that the Lord who heard the psalmist when he said I am cut off from before thine eyes, and yet heard the voice of his supplication, will hear you. May He lift you from this pit, forgive your sin for Christ's sake, break the chains that bind you, give you rest for your weary soul, and bring you again with joy into the fellowship of His people, that you may live and not die, and that grace may be glorified in your deliverance.

Thank you for opening your heart so honestly and for reaching out even when you feel tired and lost. Your weariness is heard, and you are not alone in this struggle. God sees you where you are, and He has not turned away from you.

To fall again into old sins, to feel bound to your phone, to stay away from church, to lose the desire to live and even to lose your confidence in speaking with others, this is a heavy burden. It is understandable that you feel exhausted and without direction. Yet this very tiredness can become the place where you turn again to the Lord.

One of the greatest dangers is not the fall itself, but the despair that follows it. The evil one never despairs of our destruction and never stops hoping to pull us down, and it would be a great condemnation if we, who have so many promises from God, were to despair of our own salvation. To sin wounds us, but to remain in despair keeps us from the healing that repentance brings. When a person repents with a vigilant heart, God is ready to restore quickly what was broken.

Do not let shame keep you from approaching Him, even if you sin every day. Scripture teaches that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, yet God has shown His love for us precisely in this, that He offers forgiveness and renewal. Though your soul may feel stained and dyed through with habit, God is able not only to wash you but to make you white as snow and as wool. Great is the power of repentance when it is joined to trust in His mercy.

So take courage and come to Him again in prayer, even with few words, even with sighs. Ask for forgiveness, ask for help, and keep asking. This very act of turning to Him will make you more watchful for the future, will drive away the enemy, and will draw down the lovingkindness of God upon you.

In the days ahead, try to take small and steady steps. Speak to God each morning and evening, even briefly. Open the Scriptures a little each day. Put a limit on your phone by setting it aside during prayer, meals, and before sleep, and ask a trusted Christian friend or a pastor to help keep you accountable. Return to church, even if you feel weak or out of place, for there the Lord meets His people and strengthens them. If you feel you do not want to live, please do not stay alone with those thoughts. Reach out today to a pastor, a mature believer, a family member, or a trusted counselor, and if you feel you may harm yourself, seek help immediately from someone near you.

I pray for you now that the Lord Jesus Christ, who loves you and gave Himself for you, will lift the heaviness from your heart, break the chains of habit, restore your desire for Him and for life, renew your strength, and give you peace in place of weariness. May He guide you back into fellowship with His people and teach you to find your rest in Him, and may you come to know again the hope that does not disappoint, by His grace and love. Amen.
