There is great mercy in your words, and I thank God for the grace that has kept you alive to this day. You say well, I am alive today by the grace of God, and that confession is itself a sign that the Lord has not cast you away. You speak plainly of a season of backsliding and of foolish things which have left their mark upon body and mind, and you do not complain but seek prayer. This is the very posture in which the Lord delights to show His healing power.
Hear what the Lord says to such as you, Return, O backsliding children, for I am married unto you, and I will heal your backsliding. What is that healing. It lies in two great mercies, forgiveness of its sin and release from its power. Indeed there is a fourfold healing which the Lord gives. First He forgives all the sin of it, blotting it out for Christ's sake. There is a fountain opened for the house of David and for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, that His own people may wash and be clean. Second He breaks the power of it, that you shall not remain its slave. Third He can take away the temporal chastisement with which He has visited you, or so sanctify it that it shall work for your good. And fourth He restores lost comfort, giving beauty for ashes and the oil of joy for mourning. Do not believe, O penitent wanderer, that His mercy is gone forever. If you are trusting in Jesus, though you have fallen, there is hope for your soul.
You also ask for healing, and here the Scriptures join pardon and healing together in happy conjunction. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations, and the least thing about Christ is healing. His fruit is sweet and nourishing, and even His leaves, His gentlest touches, His smallest words, are full of healing virtue. When Jesus healed the sick of the palsy He said, Son, be of good cheer, thy sins are forgiven thee, showing that pardon and healing are one in His hand. The Lord has begun to heal you and the healing virtue which His grace has infused will work in you till you shall be without spot or wrinkle. He can heal the wounded heart as well as the wounded body, for He healeth the broken in heart and bindeth up their wounds. That work is of God alone, and He will not leave it unfinished.
Think also of Peter. He was down but he was soon up again, and his story is rather his restoration than his fall. That look of Christ severed Peter from the crowd and brought him to bitter tears and then to full restoration by the threefold charge to feed the sheep. So the Lord would restore you, not only to forgive but to make your history useful to others, that having tasted the bitterness of wandering and the sweetness of return, you may strengthen your brethren.
I will pray with you and for you according to your request.
O Lord our God, we bless Thee for Thy keeping grace which has spared our brother when sin had nearly brought him to death. We thank Thee that Thou art a God who healeth backsliding and who hast promised to forgive and to restore. Forgive all his sin for the sake of Thy Son, break the power of sin within him, sanctify to him his present infirmity of body and mind, and restore unto him the joy of Thy salvation. Let the Sun of Righteousness rise upon him with healing in His wings, and grant him day by day to prove that Thy grace is sufficient.
We bring before Thee every soul he has named, each one for whom he desires salvation and health. Thou knowest them by name. We ask that Thou wouldst bring each to salvation through Jesus Christ alone, for there is no other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved. Open their eyes to see their need, grant them repentance and faith, and heal them in soul and body as seemeth good to Thee. May Thy will be done in all their lives.
We pray also for their caregivers and caretakers, doctors and medical providers, family members, loved ones, friends, acquaintances, colleagues and all associated with them. Rule over all according to Thy wise and holy will, and let Thy mercy and truth be known in every place.
We ask this in the precious and holy name of Jesus Christ our Lord, our only hope and our great Physician. Amen.
