There is a stewardship entrusted to every man, not of money only, but of power, of speech, of influence, and of every gift. The owner of this business has received a trust from the Master, and he must be found both faithful and wise: faithful in not purloining or misspending what belongs to the Lord, and wise in dispensing it fitly for the common advantage, not for the hurt of his fellow servants or his own ruin. To cast away the goods of the business on excessive comps and free luxuries is to spend upon that which does not profit; it is a waste without fruit, and great would be the blame. True wisdom is not the wisdom of this world, which seems shrewd but is foolishness, terminating here and proceeding no further. If that worldly wisdom trusted all to itself and supposed it wanted no help from above, it became foolishness, though it was accounted wisdom. But there is a wisdom spoken among the perfect, a wisdom that is from God, which makes men wise and prudent in what is true. That wisdom teaches that every act, whether in word or deed, is to be done in the name of the Lord, invoking the Son as our ally, that He may make our business easy. Where then is the use of the wisdom which is without, if it cannot profit its possessors?
You ask for prayer according to Psalm 102, that the Lord would hear and bring mercy and guidance. This is good, for we were all once foolish and disobedient, and yet God saw us imprisoned and was not ashamed, but released us and brought us to a kingdom. So we also must do to others according to our power. But pity the calamity, not the wickedness. It may be that the owner, entangled in the customs of the market, does not yet see the waste. Yet the prayer of the faithful contributes to the settled state of life, for we are bidden to pray for those in authority that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life. Pray then, not with a spirit of judgment, but with lovingkindness, considering that we ourselves once were deceived. Commend this matter to God, who is able to make known the mysteries of His will in all wisdom and prudence, and who raised up those who were worth nothing to wealth and abundance. Invoke the name of the Lord over this business, and give thanks; for when the Son is invoked, the Father is honored, and He will in turn make their business easy.
Yet do not forget that the one who tends the abject and despairing does it only because of the command of God. If the owner is to cease these needless comps, it must be with a view to use those resources for what truly profits, perhaps to show mercy to the least and meanest, for inasmuch as it is done to one of them, it is done to Christ. That is wisdom indeed: to dispense the things given not for empty show, but for the common advantage and the glory of God. Let the owner seek that wisdom which is not of this world, and let your prayer be that he would be guided to decide not by the passing reasoning of the markets, but by the wisdom from above, that the business may remain financially healthy unto long-term stability, and that every decision may honor the Master who entrusted these goods.
