You speak of a door closed by the enemy, but tell me: what door is this? If it is the door to worldly prosperity, to ease and human success, then perhaps it was not the enemy who shut it, but the hand of God, for your own salvation. For the enemy does not cast down the proud; he lifts them up, that their fall may be worse. So when you feel every earthly door slam shut, consider this: God is opening to you a great door and effectual, the door of His kingdom. That door no enemy can close. Do not lament the loss of a little silver, when the door of heaven stands ready to receive you.
And if the enemy truly has hindered some good and necessary progress, a door of righteousness or a door of utterance for the gospel, then you must first examine your life. For the apostle says, "Quench not the Spirit." An impure life is like water and dust thrown upon a lamp; it extinguishes the gift of grace. Earthly cares and the craving for success are like a violent wind that blows upon the flame. Have you left the doors of your eyes and ears wide open to wickedness? Have you opened the door of your mouth to anger and reviling? Shut your mouth when insulted, and you shut out the blast that would quench the Spirit. Close these doors with the fear of God, and the lamp will burn bright again, and you will see the door that God sets before you.
Do not pray as the fool prays for the overthrow of his enemy. To ask, "Smite the enemy!" is to stop your own mouth and anger the Judge. Rather, take up the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, and with it you will not only ward off the fiery darts of the devil, but cleave open his very breastplate. Paul himself, sitting in chains, did not ask to be freed from his bonds, but prayed, "that God may open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ." He sought boldness, not release; he prized the door of utterance above all earthly doors. Imitate him, and ask not first for the removal of trouble, but for the door of your own heart to be thrown open to speak and live for Christ.
And if the door remains shut, do not despair. Christ said, "Knock," to teach you that even if He does not immediately open, you must remain there, knocking with patience, with tears, with a changed life. For sometimes the door is shut that you may learn to knock the louder. The robber climbs up some other way, avoiding the door, and he steals; but you, enter by the door, who is Christ, through the Scriptures, through humble prayer, through a life of virtue. Then, when the King sees your perseverance, He will open, and you will enter into that fold where no enemy can ever enter, and where your progress will be unhindered, because it will be progress in holiness, not in the fleeting things of this world.
Let your request then be this: "Lord, open to me the door of Your mercy; open the door of my lips to show forth Your praise; and if it please You, open also such doors in this life as lead to true success, which is to do Your will and to gain eternal life." For thus the prophet says of Christ, "He opens to the Gentiles a great door and effectual." That door stands open before you now. Will you not enter?
