We hear the deep sorrow and confusion in your heart, and we want to assure you that God is not a God of punishment for those who are in Christ Jesus. The pain you are feeling is real, and we grieve with you, but let us turn to Scripture to understand what the Lord may be doing in your life. The enemy of our souls often seeks to distort our view of God, making us believe lies about His character. But the truth is, God disciplines those He loves—not as punishment, but as correction and refinement, to draw us closer to Him and shape us into the image of His Son.
Consider these words from Hebrews 12:5-11 (WEB):
*"My son, don’t take lightly the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when you are reproved by him; for whom the Lord loves, he disciplines, and chastises every son whom he receives. It is for discipline that you endure. God deals with you as with children, for what son is there whom his father doesn’t discipline? But if you are without discipline, of which all have been made partakers, then you are illegitimate, and not children. Furthermore, we had the fathers of our flesh to chasten us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much rather be in subjection to the Father of spirits, and live? For they indeed, for a few days, punished us as seemed good to them; but he for our profit, that we may be partakers of his holiness. All discipline seems for the present to be not joyous but grievous; yet afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it."*
If you are feeling crushed, it may be that the Lord is breaking areas of pride, self-reliance, or sin in your life so that you might rely fully on Him. Or perhaps He is preparing you for a greater work, refining your faith like gold in the fire (1 Peter 1:6-7). It could also be that the suffering you are experiencing is not discipline at all, but the result of living in a fallen world where pain and trials are inevitable (John 16:33). Whatever the case, we must trust that God is sovereign, good, and working all things for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28).
But let us also ask: *Have you examined your heart to see if there is unconfessed sin that needs to be repented of?* The Psalmist writes in Psalm 32:3-5 (WEB):
*"When I kept silence, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy on me. My strength was sapped in the heat of summer. I acknowledged my sin to you. I didn’t hide my iniquity. I said, I will confess my transgressions to Yahweh, and you forgave the iniquity of my sin."*
If there is sin in your life, repentance brings restoration and relief. But even if there is no unconfessed sin, trials will come, and in them, we must cling to Jesus. He Himself was a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief (Isaiah 53:3), and He understands your pain. He invites you to cast all your cares upon Him, for He cares for you (1 Peter 5:7).
Now, let us pray for you with hearts full of compassion and faith:
*"Heavenly Father, we lift up this precious soul to You, knowing that You are a God of love, mercy, and truth. Lord Jesus, You see the pain and confusion in their heart, and You understand it fully. We ask that You would reveal to them the purpose behind this season of suffering. If there is sin that needs to be repented of, convict them by Your Holy Spirit and lead them to true repentance. If this trial is for refinement, grant them the strength to endure and the faith to trust You completely. Remind them that You are near to the brokenhearted and save those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18).
Father, we rebuke the lies of the enemy that would seek to distort Your character in their mind. You are not a God who delights in punishment, but a Father who disciplines in love. Help them to see this trial through Your eyes and to hold fast to the hope they have in Christ. Fill them with Your peace that surpasses all understanding, and let them know that You are working all things for their good and Your glory.
We pray that You would surround them with Your presence, comfort them with Your Word, and strengthen them by Your Spirit. May they find their joy in You, even in the midst of sorrow, and may this season draw them deeper into intimacy with You. We ask all this in the mighty and holy name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, who bore our sins and sorrows on the cross. Amen."*
Finally, we encourage you to meditate on the following Scriptures and let them minister to your heart:
- **Romans 5:3-5 (WEB):** *"Not only this, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope: and hope doesn’t disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us."*
- **James 1:2-4 (WEB):** *"Count it all joy, my brothers, when you fall into various temptations, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. Let endurance have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing."*
- **2 Corinthians 4:17-18 (WEB):** *"For our light affliction, which is for the moment, works for us more and more exceedingly an eternal weight of glory; while we don’t look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal."*
Hold fast to Jesus, dear one. He is your anchor in the storm, and He will never leave you nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5). If you feel led, share more about what you are going through so we can pray more specifically for you. You are not alone in this—we are standing with you in faith.
