Prayer request to stop smoking, lusting and chewing buai, swearing and being hot tempered and to stop blaming God for my problems

Anonymous

Beloved of All
I wish to stop the following bad habits I have: smoking, chewing of bettle nut, and swearing, and being hot-headed, and to stop blaming God for my problems. Help with a powerful prayer to take these bad, disgusting habits away from me.

We come before the Lord with you in this moment, lifting up your heart’s cry for deliverance from the bondage of these sins and habits that have taken root in your life. It is a brave and humble thing to acknowledge these struggles and seek God’s power to overcome them, for the Scripture tells us in **James 4:7-8**, *"Be subject therefore to God. But resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded."* Your desire for change is evidence that the Holy Spirit is already at work in you, convicting and calling you to a life that honors Christ.

First, we must address the foundation of your request: your relationship with God. You mentioned blaming Him for your problems, and we gently but firmly rebuke this attitude, for it is a dangerous path that leads to bitterness and separation from the Lord. **Job 1:22** reminds us, *"In all this, ### didn’t sin, nor charge God with wrongdoing."* And in **Psalm 51:4**, David confesses, *"Against you, and you only, have I sinned, and done that which is evil in your sight."* God is not the author of your struggles—sin and the brokenness of this world are. Yet, He is the only One who can redeem you from them. Repent of this blame, for it is a barrier between you and the grace you so desperately need. **1 John 1:9** promises, *"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."*

Now, let us speak to each of these strongholds in your life. Smoking, chewing betel nut (buai), swearing, and a hot temper are not merely "bad habits"—they are sins that defile the temple of the Holy Spirit, which is your body (**1 Corinthians 6:19-20**). They are also idols, for they have taken the place of God in moments of weakness, stress, or anger. **Ephesians 4:29-31** commands, *"Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but such as is good for building up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear. Don’t grieve the Holy Spirit of God... Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander, be put away from you, with all malice."* Your words and actions must align with the new creation you are in Christ (**2 Corinthians 5:17**).

As for lust, we must address this with urgency, for it is a sin that wars against the soul (**1 Peter 2:11**). Lust is not merely a struggle—it is adultery of the heart (**Matthew 5:28**), and it must be mortified by the power of the Spirit. **Colossians 3:5** commands, *"Put to death therefore your members which are on the earth: sexual immorality, uncleanness, depraved passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry."* You cannot entertain lust and expect victory over these other sins. They are connected, and all must be surrendered to Christ.

You ask for a powerful prayer, but we remind you that prayer alone is not enough—you must *act*. **James 4:17** warns, *"To him therefore who knows to do good, and doesn’t do it, to him it is sin."* You must flee from temptation (**1 Corinthians 10:13**), replace these sins with godly habits (**Ephesians 4:22-24**), and surround yourself with believers who will hold you accountable (**Hebrews 10:24-25**). Destroy any tools or influences that feed these sins—throw away the cigarettes, the betel nut, and avoid environments where swearing or lust is normalized. **Matthew 5:29-30** (though speaking of lust) applies here in principle: *"If your right eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it away from you. For it is more profitable for you that one of your members should perish, than for your whole body to be cast into Gehenna."*

Now, let us pray together for your deliverance, in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the only name by which we are saved (**Acts 4:12**):

---
Heavenly Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus, lifting up our brother who has humbled himself before You, confessing his sins and seeking Your power to break free. Lord, we thank You that You are a God who delivers, who sets the captives free (**Luke 4:18**), and who transforms lives by the renewing of the mind (**Romans 12:2**). We ask that You forgive him for the times he has blamed You for his struggles, and we pray that You would reveal to him the depth of Your love and sovereignty, even in suffering.

Father, we bind the spirits of addiction, lust, anger, and rebellion in the name of Jesus. These sins have no authority over him, for he has been bought with the precious blood of Christ (**1 Peter 1:18-19**). We declare that the chains of smoking, betel nut, swearing, and a hot temper are broken *now* by the power of the Holy Spirit. Fill him with Your Spirit, Lord, and replace these sins with the fruit of self-control, patience, and purity (**Galatians 5:22-23**).

Lord, we pray specifically against the spirit of lust that has warred against his soul. Purify his heart, O God, and set his mind on things above (**Colossians 3:2**). Let him flee from sexual immorality and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace (**2 Timothy 2:22**). Give him the strength to turn away from anything that fuels this sin—whether it be media, relationships, or thoughts—and fill him with a hunger for Your Word instead.

Father, we ask that You would place godly men around him who will encourage him, hold him accountable, and point him to You. Let him not walk this path alone, but surround him with a community that spurs him on toward holiness. Give him the courage to destroy every tool of sin in his life, to walk in repentance daily, and to cling to You in moments of weakness.

We rebuke the enemy who seeks to keep him in bondage. Satan, you have no place here—this child of God is covered by the blood of Jesus, and he is *free*. We command every stronghold to be torn down in Jesus’ name (**2 Corinthians 10:4-5**).

Lord, we pray that You would give him a deep, unshakable joy in You, that these sins would lose their appeal as he tastes and sees that You are good (**Psalm 34:8**). Let him find his satisfaction in You alone, and let his life be a testimony of Your transforming power.

We ask all this in the mighty, victorious name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
---

Finally, brother, we urge you: *do not give up*. The road to freedom may be difficult, but it is worth it. **Philippians 1:6** assures us, *"Being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ."* Every time you resist temptation, you grow stronger in Christ. Every time you fall, repent and rise again—God’s mercy is new every morning (**Lamentations 3:22-23**).

Memorize Scripture to combat these sins. When tempted to smoke or chew betel nut, declare, *"Don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s"* (**1 Corinthians 6:19-20**). When anger rises, recall **Proverbs 15:1**, *"A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger."* When lust knocks, flee and quote **1 Corinthians 6:18**, *"Flee sexual immorality! 'Every sin that a man does is outside the body,' but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body."*

You are not defined by these sins—you are defined by Christ’s victory over them. Walk in that truth, and let us know how we can continue to pray for you. We are standing with you in this fight, for the battle belongs to the Lord (**1 Samuel 17:47**).

Dear friend, we're here with you, praying alongside you for freedom from these struggles. We've heard your cry and we're lifting it up to God together.

First, let's thank God for your honesty and desire for change. It takes courage to admit these things and ask for help. We're reminded of the prodigal son who said, "I will arise and go to my father" (Luke 15:18). You've taken that first step, and we believe God is meeting you here.

Now, let's address these habits one by one, starting with smoking. We know it's not just a habit; it's a stronghold that's taken root in your life. But remember, "Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world" (1 John 4:4). God is greater than this addiction, and He wants to set you free. We declare that the chains of nicotine are broken in Jesus' name. Ask God to fill you with the strength to resist cravings and the wisdom to make healthier choices.

Next, let's pray about the betel nut chewing. This habit is not only harmful to your health but also a barrier to your relationship with God. We bind the spirit of addiction behind this habit and declare that its power is broken in Jesus' name. Replace this habit with something positive, like chewing sugar-free gum or eating a healthy snack when you feel the urge.

Swearing is another habit that dishonors God and can hurt others. We bind the spirit of rebellion behind this habit and declare that its power is broken in Jesus' name. Ask God to help you speak words that build up, not tear down (Ephesians 4:29). When you feel tempted to swear, pause and say a prayer instead.

Lastly, let's pray about your hot temper. We know anger is a powerful emotion, but it's important to control it, not let it control you. We declare that the spirit of anger is broken in Jesus' name. Ask God to fill you with His peace and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). When you feel anger rising, pause, take a deep breath, and remember that a gentle answer turns away wrath (Proverbs 15:1).

Brother, we're not just praying for you; we're standing with you. We believe in your ability to overcome these habits with God's help. Keep fighting, keep praying, and keep trusting. You're not alone in this. We're here for you, every step of the way.

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
