We come before the Lord with heavy yet hopeful hearts, lifting up this man who is bound in both physical and spiritual chains. The Scriptures remind us that *"the Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit"* (Psalm 34:18, WEB). Though his circumstances are dire, we know that God’s mercy is greater, and His power to redeem is without limit. Yet we must also address a critical matter—this request does not invoke the name of Jesus Christ, through whom alone we have access to the Father. *"There is no other name under heaven that has been given among men, by which we must be saved"* (Acts 4:12, WEB). It is only in the name of Jesus that we can boldly approach the throne of grace, and it is by His authority that chains—both literal and spiritual—are broken. We pray now in His mighty name, trusting that He hears and acts on behalf of those who call upon Him in truth.
First, we pray for this man’s protection while he remains in jail. The enemy seeks to devour, but *"the angel of Yahweh encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them"* (Psalm 34:7, WEB). Father, surround him with Your heavenly host. Shield him from violence, from the schemes of others who would harm him, and from the despair that so often accompanies captivity. Let Your peace, which surpasses all understanding, guard his heart and mind in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7). May he experience Your presence in that dark place as a tangible comfort, knowing that even there, You are with him.
We also lift up his addiction to drugs and alcohol, which is a bondage that no human strength can break apart from Your divine intervention. *"No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure"* (1 Corinthians 10:13, WEB). Lord, we ask that You sever the chains of addiction in his life. Bring him to a place of true repentance, where he turns from these destructive habits and surrenders fully to You. Let this season of confinement be a time of breaking, where his heart is softened to receive Your truth. Place godly influences in his path—perhaps even fellow inmates or chaplains who can share the Gospel with him and point him to Christ, the only One who can set him free indeed (John 8:36).
Regarding his court date, we ask for Your divine favor and intervention. *"The king’s heart is in Yahweh’s hand like the water courses. He turns it wherever he desires"* (Proverbs 21:1, WEB). Father, we pray that You would move upon the hearts of those in authority—judges, lawyers, and all involved in his case. Grant him mercy and grace in their eyes. If it is Your will, delay no longer but bring his case before the court swiftly, that justice may be served and that, if possible, he may be given an opportunity for rehabilitation and restoration. Yet even in this, we submit to Your sovereign will, trusting that Your timing is perfect.
Most urgently, we pray for his salvation if he does not yet know Christ. Addiction is but a symptom of a deeper spiritual emptiness that only You can fill. *"For all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God"* (Romans 3:23, WEB), and *"the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord"* (Romans 6:23, WEB). Lord, open his eyes to see his need for a Savior. Let him understand that Jesus took the punishment for his sins upon Himself at the cross, and that by faith in Him, he can be forgiven, cleansed, and made new. *"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness"* (1 John 1:9, WEB). May this trial lead him to the foot of the cross, where true freedom begins.
Finally, we pray for those who love him and are interceding on his behalf. Strengthen their faith, Lord, and fill them with Your peace as they wait upon You. Remind them that *"the effective, earnest prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective"* (James 5:16, WEB). May they not grow weary in praying, but persist in faith, knowing that You are working even when they cannot see it.
In all these things, we declare Your victory over his life. *"He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world"* (1 John 4:4, WEB). Break every chain, Lord—spiritual, physical, and emotional. Restore what the locusts have eaten (Joel 2:25) and make him a testimony of Your redeeming power. We ask these things in the mighty and matchless name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, who alone is worthy of all praise and glory. Amen.
To those praying for this man, we encourage you to continue standing in the gap for him. Addiction and incarceration can feel like insurmountable obstacles, but with God, nothing is impossible (Luke 1:37). Keep speaking life and truth over him, and trust that the Lord is at work. If you have not already, share the Gospel with him when you are able. Remind him that his identity is not found in his struggles or his past, but in Christ. *"Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new"* (2 Corinthians 5:17, WEB). Let this be his declaration of faith.
If you are the one submitting this request, we also urge you to examine your own heart before the Lord. Are you trusting in His power, or are you leaning on your own understanding? *"Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight"* (Proverbs 3:5-6, WEB). Continue to seek God’s face, not only for this man’s deliverance but for your own spiritual growth. And remember, prayer is not a last resort—it is the most powerful weapon we have in the spiritual battle. Use it boldly and without ceasing.
