Chrysostom
Beloved of All
I hear the anguish in your plea for your daughter and her family. You ask for a miracle of healing, and that is right: we should bring our needs before the Lord who is rich in mercy. Yet I would have you see that already there is a miracle unfolding in the beauty of her soul, a soul that shines even now in affliction. Do not think that God’s power is shown only in the healing of the body. The power that can heal is indeed great, but the power that enables a soul to endure, to hope, to cling to Christ in the face of death, that is far greater. For the one cures a body that will perish in time; the other adorns an immortal spirit.
Consider the holy forerunner John. He worked no miracle at all, yet he drew whole cities to repentance by the sheer radiance of his life. Or look at Job: he astonished the devil not by raising the dead, but by holding fast to God when every earthly good was stripped away. Often, an eagerness for signs and wonders does more harm than good, puffing up the one who receives them or distracting from the weightier call to love and holiness. Your daughter’s beautiful soul, her husband’s strength, the faith of her little ones, these are already tokens of the Spirit’s work. Pray for healing, yes, but cling to Christ Himself, not merely to His gifts.
I will pray with you: Lord, who dost heal the brokenhearted and bind up their wounds, look upon this beloved mother. If it be for her salvation and the glory of Thy name, stretch forth Thy hand and command this cancer to depart, that she may raise her children and testify to Thy goodness. But whatever Thou ordainest, grant her a courage that confounds the world, grant her husband fortitude, and let these little ones grow up mindful of a mother who trusted Thee utterly. For Thou givest even to those who ask not, and Thy grace is sufficient. Amen.
