I hear the cry of your heart concerning this shop, and the vexation of spirit caused by false narratives spoken against you. You are absent in body but present in care, and it is a heavy trial to be maligned from afar. Yet remember this: the mouth that speaks falsely cannot finally prosper against the property of one whose trust is in the Lord. Your first and best comfort is this, that Jesus already knows the whole matter, for nothing is hid from His eyes. Before you even framed this request, He was moving. As it was with Philip, so it is with you, Jesus finds His own before they ever think they have found Him. He has gone before you into this conflict, and the resolution belongs to Him.
Concerning those who spread a fake narrative about your shop, I am grieved, but not astonished. The world is full of false professors and false accusers, and the tongue is a fire that can scorch a man's livelihood. But be of good cheer, when men speak all manner of evil against you falsely for the sake of hindering your provision, your Master hears it. I have often warned that it is a solemn thing when professors of religion or neighbours in society use words that are utterly false; but it is a far more serious thing for the accused saint to fly to the refuge of truth Himself. Vindication may not come by your hand, you cannot go to fight, but it will come by a better hand. Leave your reputation with Him who was called the son of Joseph by reputation only, yet was in truth the Son of the Highest. True faith, even in its simplicity, is accepted of God, and He will not let the lies of men ultimately prevail against His child's honest cause.
Let your heart settle here: "Jesus only." I do not mean merely that He is your Saviour in the great matter of your soul, though that is the chief thing, but that He is your Advocate in this very shop dispute. Moses and Elias, the law and the prophets, are fulfilled in Him, and every temporal entanglement is under His dominion too. Why torment yourself with what the society members are saying? Their words are breath and noise, but Jesus is King even in this Egypt where His people dwell. He rules the hearts of men; He can turn the renter's mind back to your shop as easily as He brought the prodigal to his senses. Look not to the slanderers, look to Jesus. If you see Him first, and in Him, you will be led into all the truth you need for this hour.
And mark this, Jesus is not unmoved by your distress. "Jesus wept" is written for your comfort. He did not weep for Lazarus alone; He weeps with His people in every perplexity. Does the sting of injustice pierce you? Jesus felt the kiss of Judas and the denial of Peter. He knows the bitter taste of betrayal and false accusation. He enters into your sorrow now, not with thunder and indignation only, but with tears of sympathy. It is your honour to weep in such company, and it is your sonship that is vindicated when you cast this burden upon Him who cares for you. Your tears are not wasted; they are bottled by the Friend who sticks closer than a brother.
Come, then, weary and burdened as you are over this shop, come to Jesus. You do not need to travel to that state; one step of faith takes you there. The way is short: leave self behind, cease from fretting, and trust the matter wholly into His hands. He calls you now to do just that. You have brought it to the church for prayer; now bring it to Jesus for rest. His rest is immediate, personal, and effectual. He does not love you because you have any strength to fight, He loves you out of pure pity because you have none. Lay the whole tangled affair, shop number, building, developer, society, renter, at His dear feet. Tell Him, "Lord, You take this matter from now on." That is the very thing He waits to hear.
I leave you with this parting word: "No man, but Jesus only." On that dear Cross hangs all my confidence, and there must hang yours for this shop as well as for your soul. Expect that He will work. It may be quietly, it may be suddenly, but He will take your matter in hand. The name Jesus means He shall save His people from their sins; and surely He who saves from the greatest evil will not leave you in this lesser one. When He clears your path, you will look back and see that the day you ceased from your own striving was the day He began to show Himself strong on your behalf. May the peace of God which passes all understanding garrison your heart until you see the deliverance He will surely send. Amen.
