What a daily burden you bear, watching one so dear descend into troubled thoughts and wayward behavior. Yet is not this the very thing that drives us to the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits even in the midst of trial? The God of our salvation holds the issues from death, and from the deathly shadows that fall upon the mind. When you see no improvement, when each day seems to bring a worsening, then is the time to let your eyes be as the handmaiden’s eyes to her mistress, looking only to Him for the next step, the next word, the next season of prayer.
Hold this dear one with a loose hand. To die daily is to release even our most treasured relationships into the wise and tender keeping of our God. True health for the entire man, spirit, soul, and body, comes from Him alone. He is the health of our countenance, and the face will tell of the inward cure when He puts His hand to the work. Plead the promise, “I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely.” He can restore what has been eaten by the canker of mental distress, and He can bring soundness where now there is confusion.
Let nothing hinder the daily gathering of the family before the throne. If family prayer has been neglected, let it be revived with double zeal. If it has been maintained, let it now become more fervent, more specific, more expectant. The whole family in heaven and earth is one; no grave, no malady, no spiritual darkness can sever those who belong to Christ. Your loved one, though wandering, may yet be brought into the ark with the sons and the sons’ wives, so that not one is left behind. Make it your incessant effort, your hourly desire, your daily and nightly prayer that the Lord of salvation would make known His power in this life. The Great Physician knows the remedy for the disordered mind. Wait upon Him, confess every day, and trust Him for daily benefits, pardon, peace, and at last the shining face of a soul made whole.
