Prayer request for a man and woman's children and there grandchildren. Few of their children that were the oldest seen their both parents drink beers and smoke cigarettes when they were young. Their youngest sibling prayed for their parents different times. The father stopped drinking and the mother stopped drinking. But it took years for the deliverance from cigarettes. Two of their kids started drinking beer and liquor and smoking and chewing tobacco. They seemed to have learned or a familiar spirit may have been waiting in their bloodlines for same spirits that affected their parents. Now one of the grandkids is experiencing same alcohol addiction as their mother. Please pray for their family. Only few want to believe in God. The grandson that is addicted to alcohol has refused anything to do with God. Family members don't understand why.

We hear the burden you carry for this family and we join with you in bringing them before the throne of grace. We thank God for the faithful prayers of the youngest sibling who interceded for the parents, and we rejoice that the father and mother were delivered from drinking, even though deliverance from cigarettes took years. This reminds us that God hears and answers prayer in His timing and that persistent prayer is powerful. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much, James 5:16.

We see in this family a painful pattern that has repeated from parents to children to a grandchild, and we understand why you speak of a familiar spirit or something in the bloodline. Scripture does warn us that iniquity can affect generations, as in Exodus 20:5, yet it also clearly teaches personal responsibility and the power of Christ to break every chain. The soul who sins, he shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son, Ezekiel 18:20. What we have learned by example and what the enemy has sown as strongholds does not have to remain. If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new, 2 Corinthians 5:17. Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us, Galatians 3:13, and if the Son therefore will make you free, you will be free indeed, John 8:36.

We must speak plainly about the bondage of alcohol and tobacco. Wine is a mocker, and beer is a brawler. Whoever is led astray by them is not wise, Proverbs 20:1, and we are commanded do not be drunken with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, Ephesians 5:18. Our bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit, and we are to glorify God in our body, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. Drunkenness and addiction are not merely habits or inherited traits, they are sins that enslave, but sin will not have dominion over you, Romans 6:14, for God provides the way of escape, No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it, 1 Corinthians 10:13.

We also grieve with you that only a few in this family want to believe in God and that the grandson who is addicted to alcohol has refused anything to do with God. We understand the family members do not understand why, but Scripture tells us why. The god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that the light of the Good News of the glory of Christ should not dawn on them, 2 Corinthians 4:4, and the heart can be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. This is spiritual warfare, and it requires continued prayer, fasting, love, and witness, not argument. This kind can come out by nothing, except by prayer and fasting, Mark 9:29.

We notice your request does not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we must lovingly say that it is only through Him that we have access to the Father and that deliverance truly comes. Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me, John 14:6, and there is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved, Acts 4:12. If we confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in our heart that God raised him from the dead, we will be saved, Romans 10:9. Without calling on the name of Jesus, prayers have no foundation, and without new birth in Him, no one can overcome the power of sin.

So we pray together now.

Father in heaven, we come before You only in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, asking for mercy on this entire family. We thank You for the deliverance You have already given to the father and mother, and we ask You to keep them steadfast and to use their testimony. We lift up the two children who are bound by beer and liquor and smoking and chewing tobacco, and we ask You to convict them of sin and draw them to repentance, that they may confess their sins knowing You are faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness, 1 John 1:9. We especially lift up the grandson who is in alcohol addiction and who has refused You. Lord, break the chains that bind him, open his blinded eyes, soften his hard heart, and send laborers across his path who will show him the love of Christ without condemnation. Let him know that You stand ready to make him free indeed. We rebuke every familiar spirit and every work of the enemy that seeks to claim this bloodline, and we declare that the blood of Jesus is stronger than any generational pattern. We ask that You raise up intercessors in this family who will not grow weary, who will speak Your Word, live holy lives, and model freedom in Christ. Bring this whole family to salvation, that they may walk in newness of life and glorify You in body and spirit. We ask all this in the mighty and only saving name of Jesus Christ, amen.

We encourage this family to continue in believing prayer, to stay in the Word daily, to seek fellowship in a Bible believing church where they can be accountable and supported, and to lovingly share Christ with the grandson through consistent godly living and patient witness rather than pressure, trusting that God is long-suffering and desires that all should come to repentance, 2 Peter 3:9.

We have been holding this family before the Lord with you as you shared this. To watch the grandparents struggle for years, then see two of their children follow a similar path with alcohol and tobacco, and now a grandson caught in the same struggle with alcohol is heartbreaking. It makes sense the family feels confused and discouraged, especially with him wanting nothing to do with God right now.

One thing that can bring a little clarity is how strongly patterns can carry from one generation to the next. What children see modeled at home shapes them deeply, and there can also be a heightened vulnerability that runs in families. Research has shown children of parents who drank heavily are more at risk, but that risk is not a fixed future. As you saw with his grandparents, who did find freedom from drinking and later from cigarettes after years of prayer, change is possible even when a pattern has been longstanding. Choice, support, and God's help can interrupt what feels inevitable.

His turning away right now does not mean those faithful prayers, like the youngest sibling's prayers years ago, were wasted.

It may help the family to sit down with a trusted pastor together to talk about how to love him steadily without pressure while they keep praying, and to get support for themselves through a pastor or a faith-based recovery group. For the alcohol use itself, alongside prayer we would gently encourage connection with a medical professional or counselor when he is willing.

Father, we bring this whole family to You in Jesus' name. Bring freedom where addiction has taken hold, heal the hurt and confusion in the family, and draw each heart, especially this grandson's, toward Your mercy. Give them wisdom, unity and patient love as they trust You day by day. Amen.

Your burden has been heard and we have carried it before the throne of grace with you. There is a great sorrow in seeing sin pass from parent to child, and from child to grandchild, and to watch those we love refuse the very remedy which would heal them.

You speak of what was learned in the home and of spirits that would hold a family in chains. The Scripture teaches us that we are each bondslaves of iniquity and we love the bondage, and that naturally we are fond of evil and run after it greedily. What was modeled before the eyes of children becomes a snare to them, and the habit of sin, once indulged, binds with cords that no man can break. Yet salvation is of the Lord. He brought forth Israel when their spirit was too crushed to dare to come forth, and He alone makes deliverance effectual. No man can deliver himself, and no family can free itself. The tried and tempted man will see clearly that salvation is all of grace, for he can do nothing and he knows it.

We rejoice to hear that prayer was offered in that home, though it seemed long delayed. The father and mother were at last delivered from drink, though the deliverance from the other snare took years. Take comfort from this, for the Lord often keeps us at the brook Jabbok through the night, full of fear and trembling, and then shows His mercy in His own hour. The clock of mercy strikes in heaven at the moment the Lord has appointed, for so has the eternal purpose of Jehovah decreed it. Continue in prayer, for God has not forgotten the youngest who prayed, and He who heard then hears still.

We must set before you and before this family the plain Gospel of salvation by divine grace through faith in Christ Jesus. The way of salvation is to believe on Him. What is believing on Him? It is trusting in Him, leaving the whole matter of your salvation with Him in unquestioning confidence, depending upon Him without fear as to your present and eternal salvation. The Scripture says, Whoever believes on Him shall not be ashamed. It is not looking to resolutions, nor to family history, nor to our own strength. It is, Look unto me and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth. How simple is that way and how instantaneous. A look does not require a moment, and yet it saves the soul.

Know also that God has found a ransom. Nobody would have thought of that way of deliverance of a sinner from the pit through a ransom if God had not thought of it. The prisoner is ready to be executed, but there comes to him undeserved deliverance from all punishment, for the King's own Son has borne the penalty of all his iniquities. This wine and milk is without money and without price. If a man believes in Christ with all his heart, his salvation is secure beyond hazard.

Our prayer for this household is this. O Lord, bring deliverance that is attended with enrichment, as Thou didst bring forth Thy people with silver and gold. Deliver from the guilt of past sins, from the power of sin which now enslaves, from the wrath that abides upon the unsaved, and at last from the very existence of sin. We ask Thee to have mercy upon the two children who have been taken in drink and tobacco, and upon the grandson who is now held fast by alcohol and who refuses anything to do with Thee. Thou knowest his heart is hardened and that he will not hear about salvation. Lord, soften him. Show him that he is a condemned sinner and that only Christ can save. Let him hear Thy voice saying, Look unto me.

We pray also for the few in the family who desire to believe. Keep them, and use them as Thou didst the jailer at Philippi, whom Thou didst call as an individual and then use as a spiritual decoy to bring the rest of the family into the Gospel net. Let this be a rejoicing family because it is a renewed family, and let it be said of them that they believed on the Lord Jesus Christ and were saved, with all their house.

We will continue to pray that the Lord Jesus Christ, who wrought a greater deliverance than Barak, would overthrow these worse enemies of strong drink and unbelief, and that every form of fellowship with Jesus, wrought in us by the Spirit, would become in that home a well of salvation.

We have received your prayer request and we are joining you in prayer for this family and for the generations represented in it.

It is painful to watch patterns of sin and addiction repeat from parents to children to grandchildren, and we understand the confusion and sorrow family members feel when a loved one refuses God. We give thanks with you that God showed mercy in delivering the father and mother from drinking, even though deliverance from cigarettes took years. That history is a testimony that God is patient and powerful to deliver, and it is right to keep asking Him to work in the same way for the children and grandchildren.

Scripture does not teach that a familiar spirit automatically lives in a bloodline and forces the next generation to sin. What it does teach is that sin has consequences that affect families, that children often learn and imitate what they have seen, and that each person is responsible before God for his own choices. As it is written, the soul who sins shall die, and each will give an account for himself, yet God also shows steadfast love to those who turn to Him and walk in His ways. The good news is that Christ came to set us free indeed. With freedom Christ set us free, so we are called to stand fast in Him and not return to the yoke of slavery, whether that slavery is alcohol, tobacco, or any other sin that entangles.

We are praying for this family in this way:

Father in heaven, we come to You through Jesus Christ alone, for there is no other name by which we can be saved. We ask for Your mercy on this whole family. Grant repentance and new birth to those who have not yet believed, and strengthen the faith of the few who do believe. We ask for deliverance for those bound by alcohol and tobacco. Break the power of addiction and give a hatred for what enslaves them and a hunger for righteousness. For the grandson who is addicted and has refused anything to do with You, we ask that You soften his heart, open his eyes to see his need for a Savior, and bring people and circumstances into his life that point him to Christ. Help him to know that You are not distant, but that You love him and call him to turn from sin and receive forgiveness and new life in Jesus. Give the believing family members wisdom, patience, and love to speak the truth without condemnation, to pray without ceasing, and to live as examples of the freedom found in Christ. Protect the youngest generation from learning these same patterns and draw them early to Yourself.

We encourage the family members who do believe to continue steadfast in prayer and in the Word, to remain in fellowship with a faithful local church, and to gently share the gospel with clarity. Deliverance is not only about stopping a behavior but about being made new in Christ, receiving adoption as sons and daughters through faith in Him and the help of the Holy Spirit to walk in freedom. God invites all to come to Him, and He is able to do more than we ask when we bring these burdens to Him.

We will continue to pray that God will bring salvation, healing, and lasting freedom to this family for His glory.
