Prayer of peace and love over family gathering

Your longing for peace in your household is heard, and I join my prayer to yours before God who is the God of peace.

It is right to ask for love and harmony when Christians and unbelievers gather together, especially when you feel opposed even within your own family for following Jesus. Know that this struggle is not strange. The Lord Himself said He came to bring a sword where faith divides, and there is an evil concord and a good disagreement. True peace is not simply the absence of tension, but peace toward God with faith, and love with faith. Without faith, love amounts to nothing, for love cannot stand apart from faith in Christ.

Therefore we pray not only for a pleasant atmosphere, but for hearts to be turned to the Lord, through whom alone there is salvation and true reconciliation. Pray for your in law and for all in that household who do not yet believe, that God would open their eyes, soften pride, and draw them to His Son. And pray also for yourself, that you may enter that gathering with lowliness of mind, which makes the Christian admirable and keeps us in continual peace. Human nature is unstable, and even close kin can become opposed over the faith, but we are called to be at peace with all people as far as it depends on us, not by contentiousness but by gentleness, patience, and endurance.

Do not overlook your own household, for to provide for and to love those of our own house, even when they oppose us, is part of walking worthy of the faith. Do not return harshness for harshness. Show the humility and quiet strength that belongs to Christ, ministering grace where you can, bearing reviling without reviling in return, and committing the outcome to God.

Let us pray together. Father in heaven, in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, we ask for Your grace and peace to rest upon this gathering. Let Your Holy Spirit work in every heart there to convict of sin, to humble pride, and to bring repentance and faith where there is unbelief. Guard Your child who follows You, give wisdom for every word and silence, and let lowliness and love be seen. Where there is division because of Your truth, give courage to stand firm without quarreling, and where reconciliation is possible, bring it for Your glory. Transform that household by Your presence, that all who are there may know that You alone are Lord and that peace with You is the foundation of peace with one another. We ask this in Jesus name, Amen.

Your longing for peace in your family is understandable and it is right to bring this gathering before the Lord. The tension you feel between those who follow Jesus and those who do not, and the pain of being opposed even by family for your faith, is something Scripture speaks about honestly.

Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not yet seen. It is not blind. It actually sees more, because it looks beyond what is visible and trusts what God has promised even when the answer is not yet in hand. Scripture reminds us that many who trusted God died in faith without having received all that was promised in their lifetime, yet their faith remained firm because it rested in God himself. Your prayer for a transformed atmosphere is an expression of that kind of faith, trusting God to work even when you cannot yet see the change.

Remember also that in the New Testament grace and peace are always linked in that order, and for a reason. Peace cannot be known until grace has been received. The deepest peace for you, and for your household, comes only through the grace of God in Jesus Christ, who alone brings reconciliation with God. It is good to pray for harmony and for pride to give way to love, and at the same time to pray that each person would come to know that grace. Only then can the lasting peace of God guard hearts.

True faith will also show itself in how we live. To say we have faith is not enough if our actions do not correspond to what we claim to believe. Faith comes first, and real faith then produces its fruit in our works. It is not that works create faith, but that living faith naturally works itself out in love, patience, and kindness. As you enter this gathering, ask the Lord to help your faith be seen in quiet, consistent love, in words that are gentle, in a willingness to serve and to forgive, even when you are misunderstood. That lived demonstration often speaks more clearly than any argument.

Do not be shaken if opposition continues. The Scriptures show that affliction and even persecution do not have to weaken faith. For those who remain steadfast, such trials often cause faith to grow stronger and love for one another to abound more deeply. The concern of the apostles for young believers was always that they would not be moved away from their faith by hardship, but would continue walking in it, nourished by the Word of God. The Holy Spirit himself is not earned by trying harder or by the works of the law. He is a gift received by faith through hearing the promise of Christ.

Praying for you now, that the Lord would guard your heart and make you steadfast, and that He would work in your family according to His mercy.

Father, I ask in the name of Jesus that You pour out Your grace upon this family and upon this gathering. Let Your Holy Spirit, whom we receive by faith and not by our own effort, be present to soften hearts, to humble pride, and to replace strife with love. Give strength to remain faithful when opposed for following Jesus, and let faith be shown in deeds of love and peace. Above all, draw each heart to know Your grace in Christ, so that the peace that comes from You may remain. Amen.
