Prayer for wife

My wife refuses to respect me, she is cursing at me all day and night and is constantly yelling and screaming. She has very little interest in having any sort of livelihood. All she cares about is controlling everything around her. She has a severe problem called “OCD”, where she believes she needs to control everything. It is exhausting and it causes her to interrogate me constantly. The more peaceful things are at home; the more paranoid and angry she becomes. She refuses to trust God, I have talked to her about her trust in the Lord many times and she has admitted that she is angry at God for a few reasons and that she doesn’t trust the Lord. I am completely exhausted from hearing screaming and cursing all day and night. She is constantly wishing harm for me, and she is praying that bad things happen to me. I tell her that God knows everything, and she will reap what she sows eventually. She doesn’t get it.

We hear your exhaustion and your heartache and we lift you and your wife up together before the Lord, asking for His mercy and healing in your marriage. Marriage is a holy covenant before God between a man and a woman for life, and God intends it to reflect the love of Christ for His church, so we grieve with you that your home has become a place of strife instead of peace.

What you describe in your wife, the constant cursing and yelling, the desire to control everything, the interrogating, the paranoia and anger, and praying for harm to come to you, does not align with God's will. The tongue has great power and God calls us to put away such things. Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but only what is good for building others up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear Ephesians 4:29. And we are commanded not to repay evil for evil, but to bless, because for this you were called, that you should inherit a blessing 1 Peter 3:9. Jesus Himself said to love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you Matthew 5:44. To wish harm and to pray for bad things to happen to her husband is sin that needs to be repented of and forsaken. Wives also are called to respect their husbands Ephesians 5:33 and to let their conduct be with gentleness, but husbands are also called to love your wives, and don't be bitter against them Colossians 3:19 and to live with your wives according to knowledge, giving honor to the woman 1 Peter 3:7.

We also hear that she admits she is angry at God and does not trust the Lord. We understand that a controlling spirit and what you describe as OCD often comes from deep fear and anxiety and a desire to find security by controlling what feels out of control, but true peace only comes from trusting God. Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don't lean on your own understanding Proverbs 3:5. You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you Isaiah 26:3. Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you 1 Peter 5:7. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:6-7. Her anger at God will only keep her in bondage until she surrenders it to Him.

We want to gently encourage you as her husband as well. It is true that whatever a man sows, that he will also reap Galatians 6:7, but when you speak that truth to her in the midst of conflict it can sound like a threat rather than a loving warning that leads to repentance. God desires that we speak the truth in love and overcome evil with good. Don't be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good Romans 12:21. A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger Proverbs 15:1. Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger, for the anger of man doesn't produce the righteousness of God James 1:19-20. Continue to be faithful to love her as Christ loved the church Ephesians 5:25, even when she does not show respect in return, and do not grow weary in doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we don't give up Galatians 6:9.

We notice in your request you speak often of God and the Lord, but you do not mention the name of Jesus Christ. We want to lovingly remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and it is only by His name that we are saved. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6. There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. If you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved Romans 10:9. We encourage you to pray in the name of Jesus and to lead your wife to put her trust not just in a general idea of God, but in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, for He alone can forgive sin, heal the heart, and give peace that controls fear.

We urge you not to walk this road alone. Please bring your pastor or godly elders into this situation for counsel and accountability, and seek help from a biblical Christian counselor and, if needed, a medical professional who can help address the OCD with wisdom and compassion. Set healthy and loving boundaries against cursing and verbal harm while still showing Christlike love, and guard your own heart from bitterness.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before You together and we lift up this husband who is exhausted and this wife who is bound by fear, control, anger and distrust. Lord, we ask You to have mercy on this marriage. Forgive where there has been cursing, disrespect, anger toward You, and prayers for harm, and bring conviction and repentance. Heal our sister of this spirit of control and anxiety and anger, cast out fear with Your perfect love, and teach her to trust You with all her heart. Give her a new heart and renew her mind by Your Word, and let her tongue speak what is helpful for building others up. Strengthen our brother, give him rest for his weariness, for You have said Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest Matthew 11:28. Fill him with Your Holy Spirit so he may love his wife with patience, gentleness and wisdom, and speak truth in love without bitterness. Bring peace into their home, restore respect and affection, and draw them both closer to Jesus. Lead them to godly counsel and help, and let their marriage bring glory to You. We ask all this in the precious name of Jesus, amen.

We hear how heavy and exhausting this has been for you. Living with yelling and cursing day and night, feeling interrogated and controlled in your own home, would wear anyone down. It makes sense you feel depleted, and we are grateful you reached out.

What you describe with constant harsh words and the need to control everything takes a real toll on both of you. Being spoken to that way over and over cuts deep and can leave you feeling on edge even when things are quiet, and it can quietly wear away at a person's sense of worth and peace.

We encourage you not to carry this alone. It helps to have one steady, wise person walking with you, a pastor or trusted Christian counselor you can meet with regularly for support and perspective, whether or not your wife is willing to go at first. If she is open to help for the anxiety and control you mentioned, gently encouraging her to see her doctor or a counselor alongside prayer can be a caring next step. Having that kind of support for yourself matters too, so you have a safe place to process and get guidance for boundaries and next decisions.

Father, we lift this husband to You in his weariness and ask You to give him rest, wisdom and steady peace in his home. We ask You to draw his wife toward Your love and bring healing where there is hurt and anger toward You. Lead them both to the right help and surround them with faithful, wise support. Guide each step ahead. In Jesus' name, amen.

Praying for you and your situation. I am sorry for your circumstances yet will most certainly pray that our Lord will touch your wife’s heart and mind, opening her eyes to the efforts you are making. May our Lord guide her and lead her to seek Him so that she can become more caring and respectful. May the Lord lead her to someone who can help her manage her OCD. Prayers for you and your wife in the name of Jesus.

Your sorrowful account has been heard with deep heaviness of heart and has been carried to the throne of grace. The exhaustion you describe, the ceaseless screaming and cursing, the controlling spirit and the open anger toward God, these are heavy burdens indeed, and we do not make light of them.

We must first remind you what marriage is in the sight of God. It is not a contract where two persons remain separate and contend for mastery, but a covenant wherein a man and his wife become one flesh. The very crown of marriage is mutual delight and complacency, a holy union wherein each seeks the good of the other. When that design is broken by strife and bitterness, the home ceases to be a haven and becomes a place of trial. Yet the covenant remains, for marriage is a lifelong bond before the Lord, to be kept in faithfulness and honored by both.

You speak truly when you say your wife refuses to trust the Lord and confesses anger toward Him. Here is the root of the sorrow. No peace can rule the heart that is at war with its Maker, and no peace can rule the home where God is not trusted. Remember that nearness to a godly spouse cannot save the soul. Lot was righteous, yet Lot's wife perished because her own heart looked back. So it is now, each soul must turn to Christ for itself, for there is salvation through Jesus Christ alone, the Lamb who was slain. There will be no marriage between your soul and Christ if you will not have Him as the Lamb, and there will be no true healing in your home until the heart is reconciled to God through His blood.

We have preached that God can reach the conscience when man cannot. As He once spoke through the dream of Pilate's wife to arrest a heedless ruler, so He can speak to a troubled and angry heart by means unlooked for. And we have seen also that in a household the weaker vessel may yet be the stronger believer, as Manoah's wife showed excellent faith and with a wise argument comforted her husband when he feared death. Pray that the Lord will give your wife such faith, that she may see His mercy and cease from striving against Him.

You mention this severe trouble of mind called OCD, and the need to control all things and to interrogate without rest. We do not despise bodily and mental affliction, and we would urge you to seek wise and godly counsel for her, with the help of your pastor and elders, and with such lawful medical help as may relieve her distress. Yet affliction does not excuse sin. Cursing, wishing harm, and praying for evil to befall you are not fruits of infirmity only, but of a heart that needs the renewing grace of God. You do well to tell her that God knows all and that what a man sows he shall reap, but speak it not as a threat in the heat of strife, for vengeance belongs to the Lord. Speak the truth in love, and overcome evil with good, lest your own spirit be hardened by constant provocation.

For your part, dear brother in trial, take heed to your own walk. Let the remembrance of your marriage unto the Lord Jesus rebuke any temptation to repay cursing with cursing. You are called to love your wife as Christ loves His church, with patience, with prayer, with firmness against sin and with tenderness toward the sinner. Set a watch over your lips and your temper when peace seems to provoke greater paranoia and anger. Cast your burden upon the Lord who will overrule all things for good, even when the way is dark and the mountain seems great before you. Faith says to that mountain, you shall become a plain before the Lord.

We counsel you to bring this matter out of private endurance alone and into the light of the church. Seek the counsel of faithful elders who can hear you both, instruct, correct, and guard you. Do not suffer in isolation, and if there be any fear for safety, seek immediate help and protection through those whom God has placed over you. Continue in daily prayer and in the Word, not only for her but for your own soul, that you may be kept from bitterness and unbelief.

We will pray for you both now.

O Lord God, who ordained marriage and who joins man and woman as one, look in mercy upon this home so torn with strife. Have compassion upon this weary husband, sustain him, keep him from fainting, give him wisdom, meekness, and steadfast love, and let his life show the new creature wrought by grace. Have mercy upon his wife, forgive her anger toward Thee, break her hard heart, and bring her to trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, the only Saviour. Cleanse her lips from cursing, take away the spirit of control and fear, and grant her a quiet and meek spirit which in Thy sight is of great price. Heal what is wounded in body and mind, and let Thy peace which passes all understanding guard both hearts. Turn this house from a place of screaming into a place where Thy name is honored, and make these two to know again the delight of holy love. We ask this for the sake of the Lamb, whose marriage to His church is the hope of all who trust Him. Amen.

Abide in Christ, keep close to His wounded side, and walk day by day in Him.
