Prayer for understanding

We come before the Lord with a humble heart, seeking His divine wisdom and understanding regarding this person in your life. Father, we ask that You reveal Your perfect will concerning this individual. Your Word tells us in Proverbs 3:5-6, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." Lord, we surrender our own desires and expectations, asking that You guide and direct this situation according to Your purpose.

We pray that You would give clarity and peace, removing any confusion or doubt. If this person is meant to be a part of your journey toward a godly marriage, we ask that You prepare both of your hearts and bring you together in Your perfect timing. If this is not Your will, we pray for the strength to accept that and the wisdom to move forward in faith. Help us to remember that our ultimate fulfillment comes from You alone, as Psalm 37:4 reminds us, "Also delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart."

Father, we also lift up any areas where we may be seeking our own will rather than Yours. If there is any ungodly attachment, emotional dependency, or sinful desire in this situation, we ask for Your conviction and correction. Help us to walk in purity and holiness, honoring You in all our relationships. We rebuke any spirit of confusion or deception that may be clouding this matter, and we declare that Your truth will prevail.

We pray that You would guard your heart against any form of idolatry, where this person or the idea of a relationship might be taking the place that belongs to You alone. Remind us that our worth and identity are found in Christ, not in another person. If this individual is not a believer or does not share your commitment to following Jesus, we ask that You give you the strength to honor Your Word, which calls us to be unequally yoked with unbelievers (2 Corinthians 6:14).

Lord, we also ask that You would reveal any areas where we may need to grow in patience, trust, or surrender. Teach us to wait on You, knowing that Your timing is perfect. If this person is meant to be your spouse, we pray that You would prepare them to be a godly husband or wife, rooted in Your love and truth. If not, we trust that You have someone even better in store, or that You are using this season to draw you closer to Yourself.

Above all, we pray that Your name would be glorified in this situation. Whether through a relationship or through walking alone with You, may Your will be done. We ask all of this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the One who gives us access to the Father and the only name by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). Without Jesus, we have no hope, no salvation, and no way to approach the throne of grace. But through Him, we can come boldly before You, knowing that You hear us and that Your plans for us are good.

We declare that Your peace, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7). We trust You, Lord, and we wait on You. Amen.

We understand how unsettled it feels to not know where you stand with someone. Wanting God to make it clear is a good and honest prayer, and we are glad you asked us to pray with you.

It is hard to wait in that in between place. Clarity often comes not all at once but little by little as you pray, watch and listen. Pay attention to consistency over time, how this person treats you and others, whether there is peace or constant confusion as you seek God, and what wise people who know you well observe.

A simple next step that may help is to set aside a few quiet minutes each day this week to bring this one relationship before the Lord very plainly, asking for wisdom and for eyes to see what is really there. It can also help to write down what you are noticing and to talk it through once with a trusted pastor or mentor who can listen without pressure.

We are praying for you.

Father, we lift our friend to You and ask for clear eyes and a steady heart. Quiet the noise and worry, and lead step by step. Give wisdom to discern what is from You and what is not, and bring peace as You guide. We ask this in Jesus name, amen.

Your request for understanding is itself a mark of grace, for it shows a heart that would rather be led by the Lord than run before Him. We join you in prayer that God, whose will is the axle of the universe and the great heart of providence sending its pulse through even the most distant limbs of human act, will make His way plain to you.

We are prone to say as those of whom James speaks, we will go and we will do this or that, we will keep this person in this place in our life and we will find our happiness so. But it is not wise to feel that we can do as we like and that everything will fall out as we desire, as if we could both propose and dispose without asking God's consent. All things are under regulation and have an appointed place in God's plan, and nothing happens but what He permits or ordains. Knowing that, we will not always say with our lips, if the Lord wills, yet we will always feel it in our hearts. There is a revealed will which we must not violate, and true wisdom seeks first what God has already spoken in His Word before it asks for light upon what is yet hidden.

So we pray with you after the pattern our Lord has taught us, I will, yet not as I will. There is a holy boldness which a child of God may use when he says, Father, I will, for he is permitted to pour out his desire before Him who hears. Whatever your desire may be He will hear you and attend to it. Yet the true child also bends before his Father's will and says, not as I will, but as You will. This is the sure way to have your way, when your way is God's way. The work of the Spirit, which is the effect of the will of God, is to change the human will and so make men willing in the day of God's power, working in them to will and to do of His good pleasure.

Let us pray together.

O Lord our God, You are King, willing to do as You please, having mercy on whom You will have mercy, and Your counsel shall stand. We bring this dear soul before You who asks for light concerning another who stands in the place of affection and uncertainty. Grant clarity, we beseech You, not according to the deceitfulness of our own hearts, but according to Your wisdom which is from above. Show what is of You and what is not. If this path be according to Your revealed will, establish it in purity, in truth, in that holiness which keeps itself unspotted from the world, and let it be ordered for Your glory. If it be not according to Your Word, which teaches us that salvation is through Jesus Christ alone and that marriage is the lifelong covenant of one man and one woman wherein alone such nearness is to be found, then in mercy make that also clear, and give grace to turn from it and to find contentment in Your will. Change the will where it needs changing, subdue it where it is unruly, and make it willing to follow You though the way be lonely for a season. Keep this one from leaning upon feeling or upon the counsel of the world, whose current will bear us the wrong way if we yield to it, and cause Your promises, which are the true treasure of Your people, to be a light to the feet. Give patience to wait upon Your providence, give counsel of godly friends and of Your Word, and give a heart that can say with Christ, nevertheless not as I will, but as You will. We ask this not because we are worthy, but because You have bidden us open our mouth wide and You will fill it, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Wait upon the Lord and be of good courage. He will not leave His purpose half accomplished. Seek His face daily in the Scripture, seek the counsel of those who walk uprightly, and keep yourself in purity before Him. What He makes clear in His Word, obey without delay, and what is yet hidden, leave with Him who sees the end from the beginning, trusting that He will bestow no good thing withheld from them that walk uprightly.
