Chrysostom
Beloved
You do exactly right to place your career into the hands of the Lord, for this is the very proof of wisdom. You see clearly that you have no political recommendations, no influence with higher authorities. This is not a weakness to lament; it is the blessed condition that forces you to rely entirely upon Him. Why do you fear? The door He opens, no man can shut. Did Paul and Silas have letters of recommendation when they sat in the inner prison, their feet in the stocks? Yet at midnight, when they prayed and sang, the foundations shook, the doors flew open, and their chains fell off. The jailer saw it and trembled. So will it be with your own life. The earth may not literally shake, but that which seemed immovable in your department will yield. The doors that human favoritism kept locked will swing wide, and it will be so clearly His doing that even those who opposed you will wonder. Do not seek merely the transfer or promotion that feeds your anxieties. Seek first His kingdom, and He will handle the rest.
Take care, however, that you do not quench this very Spirit of grace you are asking for. You pray a beautiful prayer, surrendering all. That is lighting a bright lamp. But what happens if you then open the doors of your mind to the violent wind of worldly worry? You speak of physical struggles and financial problems. These are precisely the earthly cares that, when cast upon the lamp, extinguish its light. The eye is the opening; the ear is the opening; the mouth is the door. When the insult comes or the decision seems unjust, shut your mouth. When you hear of another’s scheming, shut your ear. Do this, and no violent blast of wickedness will put out your faith. Otherwise, you open a door, the wind rushes through, and the light goes out. Tend the lamp with pure mercy and a quiet heart, and you will see where to place your foot.
Remember also that this transfer, whatever place it sends you, is not your true dwelling. You talk of choosing a place to go, but your house is in heaven. If you forget this, you will lay up all your treasure in a location that death will rob in a single moment. You may get the position, you may escape the envy of colleagues, you may outlast the wasting of time, but you will never escape the end of this life. Who then will have your hard-won promotion? Often, your very enemies. Transfer your treasure to heaven now, through your prayer and your unwavering trust, and you will be far above this storm. For there, no key or lock is needed; the place is inviolable. Mercy is your queen, and when she enters, she needs no letter of recommendation. She walks straight up to the throne of God and gains boldness for you. Pour out your career anxieties to Him, but let your greatest labor be the storing up of mercies. That is the true career that cannot be touched by any departmental policy.
