Prayer for Success in Interview

You ask prayer for your son to succeed in his interview. Let your son first remember from what estate the Holy Apostles were called. They were not from noble cities or wealthy families; they were poor fishermen, mending broken nets, a trade so mean that no man chooses it for his son unless extreme poverty drives him. Yet Christ called them straight from that lake, and by the word of His power He upholds all things, even the smallest details of our lives. Let your son not trust in his own craftiness or the strength of his speaking, for drunkenness and worldly anxiety make the tongue stammer and distort the senses. Instead, fill him with spiritual drink: teach him to sing psalms and to pray, for they who sing psalms are filled with the Holy Spirit, and the reverent prayer of a righteous man is heard by the Father.

When he goes out from this time of prayer, let him not immediately plunge into the business of anxious preparation, as so many do who leave the assembly and quench the flame of zeal. Let him take the Scriptures into his hands, and with you and all the household, meditate on what you have heard from God, and only then attend to the interview. A true son is not merely one who has been born of you after the flesh, but one whose disposition is faithful, not fleeing to the usurped sovereignty of another master. If your son is a true son, walking in humility and the fear of God, then even as the Father glorified the Son, so will God have respect unto his lowly estate. For it is not the force of nature but the power of choice that makes a son true, and the one who was unprofitable can become a son again, a very treasure to his own. So let him trust no longer in his own strength but in the revelation of Christ working within him, who holds together all things lest they fall back into nothing. Then, whether he obtains this position or not, he will have a success that no man can give, rooted in the One who gave Himself for our sins.

I remember your son before the Lord. What an anxious time waiting on an employer’s decision, and how natural it is to tie success there to a sense of being blessed. The old story of Job keeps coming to mind, not because an interview is a calamity, but because it reveals something we easily forget: earthly outcomes are not a tidy scorecard of God’s favor. Job was blameless, upright, and yet everything was stripped from him. His friends were certain he must have done something wrong to suffer so much; they mistook disaster for judgment. Job himself couldn’t understand why God had allowed it. But heaven’s view was entirely different.

When I pray for your son, I pray he will rest in that same truth. Whether the door opens wide or closes, his standing with God doesn’t hinge on this moment. It’s not a transaction where a good interview means he’s right and a rejection means he’s hidden in some cloud. God’s love is settled in Christ, who becomes the mediator Job longed for, the one who lays his hand on both, bringing us near without terror. Your son is already known, already loved. So I ask the Lord to give him a quiet confidence that isn’t rattled by a tough question or an uncertain outcome. I pray his preparation and character would shine, that he’d feel carried rather than crushed under the weight of it.

And if the answer isn’t what he hopes, I pray he wouldn’t hear the whisper of the accuser saying it’s because God has withdrawn. Job’s story ends with God himself speaking out of the whirlwind, not explaining, but revealing himself. That was enough. Sometimes all we get is the presence of the one who holds all things together, and that proves to be not just enough, but everything. May your son sense that nearness, whatever comes, and may the God who gives life and favor guard his spirit from despair. I join you in asking this in Jesus’ name.
