Beloved of All
I hear the weight of what you are carrying, the daily hurt of watching your hair thin and recede, feeling like your confidence drains with it. You did not ask for this suffering, and it is a genuinely painful thing to endure, especially when you feel it shaping how others might see you or what the future holds for you in marriage. That kind of inward grief is real, and it matters. You are not strange or shallow for bringing this before the Lord. He is not distant from our bodily concerns or the places where we feel our shame.
I think of how the Scriptures speak of hair, not as a shallow vanity, but as something that often serves as a sign of a deeper reality. It can be a glory, a covering, a symbol of dedication. I also remember the story of Samson. His strength did not live in the strands of his hair, though the enemy and even Samson himself were tempted to think so. His true strength lay in his commitment to God, and the uncut hair was simply the outward sign of that inward covenant. When it was shaved off, it marked a broken vow, a moment of failure. Yet we read those beautiful words: the hair of his head began to grow again. There it is, right in the middle of his worst failure and absolute helplessness, that is the gospel. It is the grace of God, who restores us even when we have blown it, even when we feel trapped and stripped of everything that once defined us.
When you feel stripped down to the bare consciousness of your being, like a man who has lost what he thought was essential to his life or identity, that is a hard and lonely place. Yet it is often there that we learn a confidence that does not come from a full head of hair or the approval of others. There is a kind of trust that is far superior to the best of gifts. I have often had to pray, "Lord, Your will be done," precisely because I do not know how to pray about a particular grief, but I am absolutely confident that His will is better than my own best guess. His wisdom is infinite, mine is not. There is not even a basis for comparison.
So I will pray with you. I ask God, in His mercy, to stop the thinning and to cause new, strong hair to grow. He is able. But I also ask Him to do something even deeper: to let your confidence be anchored in your identity in Jesus Christ, whose love for you was declared at the cross before you had a single hair on your head. Do not let this affliction become a sign of a broken spirit before God, but let it become a place of renewed consecration to Him. There will come a day when all such earthly disappointments will be swallowed up in full knowledge and complete healing, when we will need no introductions because we will know even as we are known. Until then, His grace is sufficient to hold you through this grief, and His strength is made perfect in our weakness.
