Prayer for some friends who are harming themselves

We are deeply moved by your compassion and concern for your friends and we join with you in bringing them before the Lord in prayer. It is a beautiful and Christlike thing to carry the burdens of others and to intercede for them, and we thank you for not looking away from their pain.

We noticed that your request did not mention the name of Jesus and we want to gently share why His name is so essential. It is only through Jesus that we have access to God the Father and it is only through Him that we are saved and our prayers are heard. Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Scripture tells us in Acts 4:12, There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. To come to God we must come through faith in Jesus Christ, believing that He died for our sins and rose again, and trusting Him as Lord and Savior. It is in His name we pray, and it is through His blood we can approach the throne of grace with confidence for ourselves and for our friends.

We grieve that your friends are harming themselves. Self harm is not God's will for them and it does not reflect His heart toward them. Their pain is real, and the Lord sees it and draws near to those who are hurting. Psalm 34:18 tells us Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. And Psalm 147:3 promises He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds. We want to lovingly rebuke the lie that their bodies or their lives have no value or that punishment or harm will bring relief. Scripture teaches in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, Or don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s. Each of your friends is fearfully and wonderfully made, deeply loved, and bought with the precious blood of Jesus. God has thoughts of hope toward them, for Jeremiah 29:11 says, For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.

We also want to encourage you as you walk beside them. The Lord calls us to bear one another's burdens, but He does not call you to carry this alone. We encourage you to continue to show them gentle, nonjudgmental love and to listen with compassion, pointing them to the hope that is in Christ. At the same time, because self harm can signal deep distress and danger, we urge you not to keep this as a secret between friends alone. Please encourage your friends to reach out for help and, with their safety in mind, help connect them to a trusted adult, a pastor, a counselor, or a medical professional who can provide immediate care and ongoing support. If you ever believe they are in immediate danger, please stay with them and help them get emergency help right away. You can also continue to cast your own worries on the Lord as you care for them, for 1 Peter 5:7 reminds us to be casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you. And Isaiah 41:10 gives us all this comfort, Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

We pray together now for you and for your friends.

Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, and we thank You that through Him we can approach Your throne. We lift up these precious friends who are harming themselves. Lord, You see their hidden pain, their brokenness, their loneliness, and the thoughts that drive them to hurt the bodies You created. We ask You to surround them with Your presence, to break through the darkness with Your light, and to let them know how deeply they are loved and valued by You. Heal their broken hearts and bind up their wounds, replace despair with hope, and shame with the knowledge that they are Your beloved children. Give them courage to reach out for help and to receive the care they need, and lead them to people who will support them with wisdom and grace. Help them to know that their bodies are temples of Your Spirit and that You have a future of peace and hope for them. We also lift up our friend who is interceding for them. Give wisdom, strength, and discernment to know how to love well, what to say, and when to seek help from others. Guard this friend from discouragement and fill this friend with Your peace as all anxiety is cast upon You. We ask that both this friend and these hurting friends would come to know Jesus more deeply and trust in Him for salvation and healing. We ask all of this in the name of Jesus, our only hope, Amen.

Thank you for bringing your friends to us in prayer and for already praying for them yourself. Caring about people who are hurting in this way can feel heavy, and your compassion matters more than you may realize.

We encourage you to keep being a steady, kind presence, listening without trying to fix everything yourself. It helps to gently encourage your friends toward a trusted person who can walk with them ongoing, like a counselor, pastor, school counselor, or medical professional, alongside prayer. And please do not carry this burden alone. Talk with a mature, trusted adult or pastor yourself about how to support them well and how you are doing through this.

We are praying with you.

Father, we lift these friends to You and ask for Your protection, comfort and healing in their lives. Give them hope and bring caring help around them. Give our friend here wisdom, strength and peace as they care, and show them how to love well while pointing to the help that is needed. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your tender concern for your friends is itself a token of grace at work in your own heart, and it is a right and Christlike thing to carry their sorrow to the throne of mercy. We will join you in prayer for them, and we would have you continue steadfastly in that holy work.

These wounds which they inflict upon themselves testify to a deeper wound within. The heart is the fountain, for out of it are the issues of life, and when the heart is in darkness and distress, the hands will follow its grief. Our Lord cannot be gratified by self inflicted tortures. These things are will worship, which is no worship at all. He does not ask for your blood, for He has shed His own. Christ came that those who see not may see, and that those who sit in darkness may see a great light. He bears in His own body the marks of suffering that we might be healed, and He invites the broken hearted to come to Him, not to punish themselves, but to find mercy.

We would have you pray for them in the Holy Spirit, humbly and believingly, pleading the promises of God. There is no iniquity or misery so deep that His mercy cannot reach it. Depths of mercy, can there be mercy still reserved for them. It is reserved for them. Jesus delights to be laid hold of by one who says, I cannot take no for an answer, this blessing I must have, for You have promised it. Bring their hard cases to One who is wiser than Solomon. Is anything too hard for the Lord. After Calvary nothing is too intricate or too difficult for Him to unravel. He who made the heavens and the earth can make a new heart and give peace where there is now turmoil.

Therefore pray and expect an answer. He who prays without expecting to receive mocks at the mercy seat, but the Lord has said, You shall make your prayer unto Him and He shall hear you. Keep on pleading for them, that the Lord would visit them with His saving health, that He would give them sight where they are blind to hope, that He would keep their hearts with all diligence, and that He would show them that their bodies and souls are precious in His sight, bought with a price.

We pray now that the Lord would have mercy upon your friends, that He would forgive their sins and heal their sorrows through Jesus Christ alone, that He would lift the darkness that now covers them and shine His light into their despair, that He would take away the impulse to harm what He has made, and give them to see that there is hope and help in Him. May He raise up around them faithful and tender helpers who will point them to Christ and walk with them in love, and may He give you wisdom and perseverance as you love them and intercede for them. May the Holy Spirit help you to pray without ceasing until joy and peace in believing are theirs.

We will not cease to remember them before the Lord, trusting that He who hears prayer will do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your concern for your friends is itself a work of love, and it reflects the kind of friendship that belongs to Christ, where a person is as careful for a friend's soul as for his own. You have done well to pray for them, and you do well to keep praying and to seek help for them.

Self harm often comes from deep distress, hopelessness, and a sense of being overwhelmed. It is not a path to healing, and it grieves the Lord who made us and calls us to life. Yet Scripture shows us that God is near to the brokenhearted and that He gives hope even when we cannot see a way forward. Hope is confidence in what is to come from God, and with hope comes patience to endure present trials. That hope and patience come from the Holy Spirit, who is given to us as we believe and as we walk with Him in faith and good works.

I will pray for your friends, and I join you in asking the Lord to show them His mercy.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, who alone is our salvation, have mercy on these friends who are harming themselves. You know their pain, their thoughts, and the burdens they carry. Bring them comfort, bring them true hope, and let them know they are loved and not alone. Guard their lives, heal what is wounded in heart and mind, and draw them to Yourself. Give them courage to reach out for help and to receive it. Fill them with Your Holy Spirit, that they may have joy and peace in believing and may abound in hope. And give wisdom and strength to the one who has brought this request, that he may be a faithful and gentle friend, speaking truth in love.

For your part, continue to show that faithful friendship. Keep praying for them daily. Do not carry this burden alone. Encourage your friends with kindness and without judgment to speak to a trusted pastor, counselor, parent, or other responsible adult, and to seek appropriate care from a doctor or counselor. If you believe they are in immediate danger, stay with them as you are able and help them connect at once with a trusted person or with emergency help in your area. Listen, remind them of their value before God, and point them to the Scriptures and to the fellowship of the church, where God often brings healing through His Word, through prayer, and through the love of His people.

God crowns even the small offering of hope and prayer that we bring to Him, and He Himself supplies what we lack. Do not grow weary in doing good. Keep watching, keep standing firm in faith, and keep entrusting your friends to the Lord who is able to restore and to make whole.
