Beloved of All
Your care for your friends and your desire to bring them before God in prayer is a right and loving response. To carry a burden for others and to intercede for them is at the heart of what God calls us to do, and that kind of prayer grows out of love for souls who are hurting.
Those who harm themselves are often carrying a very heavy weight. Jesus spoke to that condition when He invited all who labor and are heavy laden to come to Him for rest. He said His yoke is easy and His burden is light. The heavy burden people feel so often comes from trying to carry life on their own, trying to satisfy self or to find relief in ways that cannot truly help. That is a hard and crushing load to bear. What Jesus offers is different. To live for Him and to walk in His will is not meant to press us down, but to lift us up and give rest to our souls.
Scripture makes a contrast that is helpful here. False supports and false hopes become something we have to carry, and they bow us down under their weight. The true God is not one we have to carry. He is the One who carries us. From the beginning of life to the end, He promises to uphold and sustain those who trust Him. Your friends do not need another weight to bear. They need to know there is a God who is willing and able to carry them, to forgive them, and to change their hearts from the inside. We cannot change our own hearts by self effort, but the Spirit of God can.
God hears intercessory prayer. He invites us to bring the needs of others before Him, to ask Him to relent from harm and to show mercy. He is not a God who lays a heavy, unbearable burden on His people and leaves them to struggle alone. When we feel pressed down and ready to go under, that heaviness is not what He intends for us. His way is to give rest, hope, and strength for each day.
Continue to pray for your friends by name, asking God to show them His love through Jesus Christ, to give them hope beyond their pain, and to open their hearts to receive help. Pray that He would bring trusted people around them who can walk with them closely. Encourage your friends, as you are able, to reach out for help to a pastor, a counselor, or another mature and trustworthy person who can support them in person. You do not have to carry this burden alone either. Share your concern with someone wise and caring who can pray with you and help you know how best to support them.
Let us pray together. Father, we bring these friends before You and ask for Your mercy and healing. You see their pain and the heavy load they are carrying. We ask that You would reveal Yourself to them as the One who carries and sustains, that You would draw them to Jesus Christ who alone gives rest to the weary. Change their hearts by Your Spirit, lift the heaviness they feel, and give them hope and life. Surround them with help and care, and give their friend who is praying wisdom, love, and perseverance as they intercede. We ask this in the name of Jesus, who invites the heavy laden to come and find rest. Amen.
