Prayer for sleep

We join with you in asking our Heavenly Father for relief from pain and for peaceful, restorative sleep, and we thank you for asking in the name of Jesus, for it is through Him we have access to the Father.

We know how wearying pain can be, especially when it robs us of rest, and our hearts ache with you in this season. Scripture reminds us of God's tender care for us in our weakness and in the night. It says, In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, Yahweh alone, make me live in safety Psalm 4:8. And again, for he gives sleep to his beloved Psalm 127:2. Jesus Himself invites us, Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest Matthew 11:28.

We also remember that our God is our healer who sees your pain. He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds Psalm 147:3. We can bring every burden and discomfort to Him, casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you 1 Peter 5:7.

We pray together now.

Father, in the name of Jesus we lift up this dear one to You. You know the pain that afflicts their body and the weariness that comes from sleepless nights. We ask for Your healing touch, that You would ease their pain according to Your will and bring comfort to their body. Grant them peaceful and restorative sleep, that they may lie down in peace and wake refreshed and strengthened. Quiet their mind and heart from anxiety and let Your presence guard them through the night. Help them to rest fully in Your care, trusting that You neither slumber nor sleep as You watch over them. We ask this in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus, amen.

We encourage you to continue to cast your cares on Him each night before you sleep, perhaps taking time to pray and meditate on His promises, and to trust Him with both your pain and your rest. If this pain continues, we also encourage you to seek wise medical counsel, for God often works through the hands of physicians as well. May the Lord grant you deep, healing sleep and renewed strength in the days ahead.

We hear how tired you must be, carrying pain through the day and then not finding rest at night. When sleep is broken it wears on everything, body and spirit, and we are really glad you reached out so we can pray with you.

You asked for relief and for peaceful, restorative sleep, and that is what we are bringing before the Lord with you. He sees you in those long nighttime hours and He cares about both the pain you feel and the rest you need.

When pain and sleeplessness keep going together, it can help to bring someone else into the care with prayer. If you have not already, we encourage you to let your primary care doctor know what you are experiencing, so they can listen and help look for next steps. Some people find it helpful to jot down for a week or so when sleep is most difficult and when pain is better or worse, just to have a clear picture to share with a clinician. We will keep praying for wisdom for you and for those caring for you as well.

Father, we lift our friend to You tonight. You know the pain they feel and how much they long for rest. We ask for Your comfort to be near, for relief as You see fit, and for sleep that restores. Give them peace in the night and strength for each day, and guide them to good help and care. We trust them into Your hands in Jesus' name, amen.

Your petition for relief from pain and for peaceful, restorative sleep has been heard, and we bring it with you to the throne of grace in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Sleep is the gift of God. We think that we lay our heads upon our pillows and compose our bodies in a peaceful posture and therefore we naturally and necessarily sleep, but it is not so. The Lord himself must give it, for so he giveth his beloved sleep. There is a sleep of contentment and a sleep of security which the Christian may enjoy, not because his circumstances are easy, but because his God watches over him and keeps him. When the Lord grants it, the weary frame is recruited and exhausted strength is renewed to fit us for fresh exercise of our faculties when we awake.

We are mindful also how pain makes the night long, and how sleeplessness becomes a sore trial when night follows night and there has been no rest, till the sufferer cries, Oh that I could sleep. Know that our Saviour marks such affliction with tender compassion. His eyes were always quick to spy out the lame, the blind, the crippled, and his hands were always stretched out immediately for their relief, for he went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed. He knows your weariness and your pain, and he is full of pity toward those who look to him.

So we pray for you now, asking through Jesus Christ alone, by whom we have access to the Father, that the Lord who himself neither slumbers nor sleeps would watch over you. May he in his wise and tender mercy ease your pain, calm your spirit, and give you that gentle, refreshing sleep which comes from his hand. May he grant you contentment in his love and security under his wing, so that you may lie down in peace and sleep, for so he giveth his beloved sleep. And may he sustain you in this present weariness with the hope of that perfect restoration when God shall wipe away all tears from our eyes, and there shall be no more pain, for the former things are passed away. Amen.
