Prayer for sleep

We join with you in asking our Heavenly Father for relief from pain and for peaceful, restorative sleep, and we are encouraged that you have asked in Jesus' name, for it is only through Him that we have access to the throne of grace.

We know how wearing pain can be, especially when it steals sleep, and how the lack of sleep can make pain feel even heavier. God sees your affliction and He cares deeply for your body and your rest. Scripture reminds us that sleep itself is a gift from Him, Psalm 127:2 says it is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil, for he gives sleep to his beloved. And Psalm 4:8 declares I will both lay me down and sleep in peace, for you, Yahweh, alone make me live in safety. He is the one who heals and binds up, as Psalm 147:3 tells us He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds, and He invites us to bring every burden to Him.

Jesus says in Matthew 11:28 Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. We take comfort also in Philippians 4:6-7 where we are told In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. We are to be casting all our worries on him, because he cares for you as 1 Peter 5:7 teaches.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we lift up this dear one to You in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son. You know the pain they are enduring and the weariness that comes from sleepless nights. We ask for Your healing touch, that You would ease their pain according to Your perfect will and bring comfort to their body. Grant them peaceful, deep and restorative sleep tonight and in the nights to come. Quiet their mind and heart, remove anxiety and discomfort, and let Your peace which surpasses all understanding guard them as they rest. Help them to lie down in safety under Your watchful care and to wake refreshed and renewed for Your purposes. We thank You that You neither slumber nor sleep as You keep watch over Your children, and that we can trust You with every need. We ask all this in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus, amen.

We encourage you to continue to cast every care on Him before you sleep, to thank Him even for small mercies, and to rest in His unfailing love. If pain persists, we also encourage you to seek wise medical counsel as God often brings healing through those means as well, while we continue to trust Him as our ultimate Healer and Restorer.

We have been holding your request before the Lord and thank you for sharing it so honestly. Asking for relief from pain and for peaceful, restorative sleep is such a personal need, and we hear how wearing it can be when nights are broken and days feel heavy because of it.

Pain and poor sleep so often affect each other, and when sleep is disrupted it touches everything, body, mind and our sense of peace. God designed sleep as a needed gift for our whole selves, so it makes sense that missing it leaves you feeling drained. You are not forgotten in those long nighttime hours, and we are praying you feel supported as you seek help.

Alongside prayer, if this pain and trouble sleeping have been ongoing, we gently encourage you to let your doctor or trusted health provider know what you are experiencing if you have not already. It can sometimes be helpful to keep a brief, simple note of when you sleep and wake and how the pain is at night, to share with them so they have a clearer picture.

Father, we lift our friend to You tonight. You see the pain and the tiredness and the longing for rest. We ask for Your nearness and comfort in the night, for wisdom for those providing care, and for Your peace to guard heart and mind. We place this need in Your caring hands in Jesus' name, amen.

Your request for relief from pain and for peaceful, restorative sleep has been heard and we bring it before the Lord with you.

We are reminded that sleep is the gift of God. We think that we lay our heads upon our pillows and therefore we naturally sleep, but it is not so. The Scripture says, so he giveth his beloved sleep. It is a sleep of contentment and a sleep of security which the Lord himself bestows upon those who trust him, a rest which recruits our exhausted strength and fits us again for service.

He knows the weariness of the body and the heaviness of pain. Our Lord when he walked among men had eyes that were quick to spy out the lame and the suffering, and his hands were stretched out for their relief, for he went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed. He is still full of compassion toward those who ache and who watch through the night longing for rest. What a blessing sleep is to this poor weary frame, and how we count it a sore trial when night follows night and sleep is withheld.

We pray for you now.

Our Father, we ask in the name of Jesus Christ thy Son that thou wouldst look upon thy suffering child and grant relief from pain. Lay thy hand of mercy upon the body, ease what is sore and troubled, and quiet the mind and heart with thy peace. Give that which only thou canst give, peaceful and restorative sleep, that the body may be refreshed and the spirit renewed. Help thy beloved to lie down in contentment and in security, trusting in thy watchful care through the night, and to awake with strength to serve thee. We ask this in Jesus name, amen.
