Chrysostom
Beloved
The pain that keeps you from sleep and the weariness of your body are not unknown to our merciful God. He who watches over Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps, and He sees your tossing upon your bed. Recall that blessed Paul and Silas, when thrust into the inner prison with stripes upon their backs, at midnight prayed and sang praises to God. Their pain did not steal their wakefulness into despair; it became the very occasion of holy vigils. Do not therefore let the smart of pain cast you into dejection. Instead, while you lie awake, let your heart watch unto prayer. That very sleeplessness may become a door opened to you in the Lord, a time to taste the collectedness of the saints whose hearts are not stifled by excess, but who are quickly awake to God.
Our Lord is not indifferent to the needs of the body, for He created it and knows our frame. He who inspired Paul to counsel Timothy, “Use a little wine for your stomach’s sake,” surely cares for your infirmity. It is not wantonness to seek relief from pain so that you may serve Him with a refreshed body. So we pray in Jesus’ name that He rebuke the pain and grant you peaceful, restorative rest. But if He should delay, accept the vigils as a gift, and let your soul learn that sober watchfulness which belongs to the day of the Spirit. For this present life and all its ills are but a dream that passes, while the real and abiding things are with Christ.
May the Lord, who loosed the bonds of Paul and shook the prison, send His relief upon you in His time. And whether you sleep or wake, may you be found in Him, steadfast and unmoveable. Amen.
