Let not your heart be troubled at this hour of fear for your father’s frame. The great Father of our Lord Jesus Christ has given you a mighty plea in that very Name you have uttered, Jesus, the Beloved of the Father, in whom you are accepted. When the physician’s word seems heavy, and the morrow holds dread of an ill report, lift up your soul to Him who is the Father of all mercies. Did not our Lord Himself answer the unspoken cry of His disciples by saying, “I thank You, Father”? Even so, my hearer, in your anxiety you may pour out your thanksgiving before the answer comes, for the Father is already at work, and His love is a well that never runs dry. The same Father who gave His Son for your soul will not withhold needed kindness for your earthly parent; He who guides the very sparrow’s flutter watches over the intricate workings of every human heart.
You are not come to a remote judge, but to a Father who sees our frame and remembers we are dust. Look upon the Father through the clear glass of Christ Jesus, and you will behold no frown of severity, but the smiling face of tender care. He is the orphan’s father, the helper of the weak, and He has declared, “I will be a Father unto you.” When the report is examined and the surgery draws nigh, do not sink into the mire of unbelief. Rather, rest in that blessed name, “Abba, Father,” which is the sweetest music this side of Heaven. The true child leaves the unravelling of all perplexities to Him, knowing that His wisdom and love never err. Even if the answer tarries or comes in a form you did not design, the Spirit teaches every believing heart to breathe, “Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight.”
Your father’s body is known to the great Physician; the hidden currents of his frame are not concealed from Him who fashioned the eye and planted the ear. That cataract which dims his sight, the Almighty can command light to spring forth. That faltering rhythm the electrograph records, the Lord of life can steady it with a word. Entrust him, with all the holy audacity of faith, into the hands of the Father, assured that for Christ’s sake, you and your loved one are received. In union with Jesus, you have fellowship with the Father, and no member of Christ’s mystical body shall be cast off. Bind this promise as a holy seal upon your soul: you shall find the Father a better protector than the kindest earthly father could ever be to the dearest son. Therefore, go softly to your knees and with quiet confidence await the morrow. Glory be unto the Father, who is able to do exceeding abundantly above all we ask or even think.
