Prayer for repercussions

We join you in bringing this situation before the Lord and we hear your concern for justice and for the wellbeing of the child involved. We understand the desire to see what is right done, especially when a child may not be receiving the provision that is needed, and we want to seek God's will together with you in Jesus' name.

Scripture is very clear that a father has a God given responsibility to provide for his children. 1 Timothy 5:8 says But if anyone doesn't provide for his own, and especially his own household, he has denied the faith, and is worse than an unbeliever. Children are a heritage from the Lord, Psalm 127:3 tells us, and God Himself reveals His heart as A father of the fatherless, and a defender of the widows, is God in his holy habitation. Psalm 68:5. We can trust that God sees this child and this family and cares deeply about their needs being met.

At the same time we want to gently speak to the way this request is framed. It is right to desire justice and accountability, but we are called not to desire vengeance or harm for its own sake. Romans 12:19 says Don't seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God's wrath. For it is written, Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord. And Romans 13:1 and Romans 13:4 remind us that God has established governing authorities to carry out justice in an orderly and lawful way. Rather than praying for significant repercussions as a form of punishment, we are called to pray for truth to be revealed, for conviction and repentance if there has been wrongdoing, for obedience to what is right, and for the lawful authorities to act with wisdom and fairness.

If your friend has indeed been neglecting his duty, our prayer is that the Lord would convict his heart, bring him to repentance, and move him to do what is right and to make things right for his child. Hebrews 12:6 tells us that whom the Lord loves, he disciplines, and such discipline is meant to lead to restoration, not merely to harm. If he has been faithful and the concern is based on misunderstanding, we pray that truth would become clear and that his name would be cleared and relationships preserved. In either case we pray for the child's provision and protection, that their needs would be fully met.

We also want to encourage you to examine your own heart before the Lord in this. It is easy to hold bitterness when we see injustice, but we are called to love even those who do wrong and to desire their restoration. Matthew 5:44 says love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you. Ephesians 4:32 calls us to be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you. We can desire accountability while still desiring mercy and a changed heart.

We noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we want to lovingly remind you that it is only through Him that we have access to the Father. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. Acts 4:12 says There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. If we confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in our heart that God raised Him from the dead, we will be saved. Romans 10:9. It is by His name we pray and are heard.

So we pray together now.

Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this child and this family to You. You know the truth about whether support has been given or withheld, and nothing is hidden from You. We ask that You provide fully for this child, that every need would be met and that this little one would feel Your love and care as their true Father. If this father has failed in his responsibility, we ask that You convict him, soften his heart, lead him to repentance, and give him the desire and ability to provide faithfully and to walk in integrity. We pray that lawful authorities would act justly and wisely where they are involved, and that justice would be done in a way that honors You and restores what is right. We pray for our own hearts as we intercede, that You would keep us from vengeance and bitterness and fill us with love, mercy, and a desire for restoration. Lead all of us closer to Your Son Jesus and help us to trust Your perfect justice and mercy. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

We hear your concern for these children and your desire to see what is right and responsible done for them. It is heavy to watch a situation where support may not be provided, and to carry worry for how that affects a family after divorce.

That longing for accountability makes sense. When children are involved, faithfulness in providing for them matters deeply, and being willing to be answerable for our obligations is part of living with integrity. At the same time we have found that asking God for justice is different from asking Him to punish someone for us. We can bring the whole situation to Him and trust Him to work in ways that uphold dignity for everyone, especially the children, and to guide those responsible toward doing what is right.

One steady next step you could consider is focusing your support where you have influence. If you are close to this friend, a calm, caring conversation encouraging him to meet his responsibilities and to seek wise counsel if he is struggling can sometimes open a door. If you are walking alongside the parent and children, continuing practical encouragement and allowing the proper legal process to address support questions helps keep the burden where it belongs, rather than carrying it alone.

We are praying with you.

Father, we lift these children and both parents to You. Provide for the children's needs, bring wisdom and honesty to this friend, and guide all involved toward responsibility and peace. Give our friend making this request discernment in how to care well and to trust You with what he cannot control. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your prayer reveals a right concern for justice and for the welfare of a child, and it is good that you bring this burden before the Lord, for He is the Father of the fatherless and the Judge of all the earth who will do right.

Yet I must counsel you to turn the prayer from seeking repercussions to seeking righteousness and mercy, for vengeance is not ours to dispense. As I have often said, the system of Redemption marries Justice and Mercy, and the economy of Substitution blends Acceptance and Vengeance, for the day of vengeance was in His heart when Christ bore the penalty upon the cross. That day is over for those who are in Christ, and for all men the Lord reserves vengeance to Himself. It is not for us to ask that a fellow sinner be struck, but that he be awakened, convinced, and restored to his duty.

You ask rightly that a father should provide for his own. Scripture is plain that if any provide not for his own, he has denied the faith. If your friend has been neglectful, the need is not first for punishment to fall upon him, but for his conscience to be touched and his heart to be made willing to do what is just before God and man. Remember also this word, brother, the most splendid vengeance you can ever have is to do good to them that do you evil, and to speak well of them that speak ill of you. Let that spirit rule your prayer.

There is forgiveness with God, and it is surprising forgiveness, complete and eternal, to be had now through the blood of Jesus Christ. This does not make sin light, but it shows us how to pray for sinners, that they might obtain that forgiveness which leads to forsaking sin. Pray not that your friend be crushed, but that he be converted in this matter, that he may do justly and love mercy.

Let us pray together in this way, that God would search the truth of the matter, provide for the child and the mother who bears the burden, move your friend to honest confession and faithful provision if he has failed, grant wisdom to those in lawful authority to act with equity, and keep your own heart from bitterness against your fellow man, that you may rest in Him who works all things well and completes His own work in us.
