Duties of Husbands to Wives
A Broad Gospel
The Dumb Devil
We join with you in bringing this relationship before the Lord, asking for His healing and His will to be done in both of your lives. We hear your desire for repair, for restored communication, and for patience, love and understanding, and we agree with you that these things are needed and that only God can truly provide them.

We also want to lovingly speak truth over what you have called a relationship with your partner. Scripture teaches that marriage is to be held in honor among all, and that the marriage bed is to be kept undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers Hebrews 13:4. Marriage is God's design for a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman, and any courtship or dating should be with that holy goal in mind, between two believers in Christ who are seeking to become husband and wife. We use the word partner in our culture very loosely, but we encourage you to see this person as someone you are courting with intention toward godly marriage if you are not already married. If there is any sexual intimacy outside of that marriage covenant, God calls it fornication and He calls His children to flee sexual immorality, for every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body 1 Corinthians 6:18. If that is part of your story, we urge you together to repent, to seek forgiveness through Jesus, and to pursue purity going forward, honoring God with your bodies and your commitment.

For what is broken, we know our Lord is the healer of hearts, for He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds Psalm 147:3. Communication breaks down when pride, hurt, or haste takes over, but God gives us a better way. Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger James 1:19, and let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but only what is good for building others up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear Ephesians 4:29. Patience and understanding do not come from trying harder, they come from walking in the love God defines for us. Love is patient and is kind, love doesn't envy, doesn't brag, is not proud, doesn't behave itself inappropriately, doesn't seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil, doesn't rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth, bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things 1 Corinthians 13:4-7. We are called to live with all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love, being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace Ephesians 4:2-3, and above all these things, to walk in love, which is the bond of perfection Colossians 3:14.

We are thankful you invoked the blood of Jesus over you both, for it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and it is His blood that cleanses and covers us. We agree and ask for that covering and for His will to shape this relationship into one that honors Him.

We pray together now, Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift this relationship to You. Lord, You see what is broken and where communication has failed. We ask You to soften both hearts, to remove bitterness and pride, and to teach them to listen to one another with grace and to speak truth in love. Pour out upon them patience when they are irritated, love when they feel distant, and understanding when they do not see eye to eye. If they are not yet married, give them clarity about Your will for marriage, convict them where there is sin, and lead them to pursue a Christ centered covenant that honors You, or to step away if this is not Your will for a godly marriage. If they are married, strengthen that covenant and restore what the enemy has tried to tear apart. Cover them in the blood of Jesus, guard their hearts and minds, and draw them both closer to You first, so that they may be closer to one another in a way that glorifies You. We ask that Your perfect will be done and that You be honored in all they do. In Jesus name we pray, amen.

We are grateful you shared this with us and asked us to pray for your relationship. Wanting repair, clearer communication, and more patience and understanding is a good and loving desire for your marriage, and we want to stand with you in it.

We know how heavy it feels when communication breaks down and you long to be heard and to understand each other better. Often the deepest strain comes not from lack of care but from not being able to quite name what we feel inside and share it in a way the other can receive. What we say and how we say it both matter, and even tone of voice or body language can speak as loudly as words.

A small practice that helps many couples is to set aside a calm, undistracted time a few times a week, even ten or fifteen minutes, where you each take a turn to share one feeling and one need in simple, personal words, and the other listens just to understand before responding. It is not about solving everything at once, but about building a habit of honesty and listening that makes patience and love easier to practice day by day.

We are praying for both of you as you take these next steps.

Father, we bring this marriage before You in Jesus' name. Cover this couple with Your grace, heal what is broken, and teach them to speak and listen to each other with love and understanding. Give them patience in hard moments, wisdom for what to do next, and draw them closer to You and to each other. Amen.

Your prayer has been brought before the Lord and we join with you in seeking His grace and mercy. We hear your desire for repair where things are broken, for true communication, and for patience, love and understanding, and we know that these good gifts flow only from Him who is love itself.

The love of God toward His people is an abounding love, and it is also an abiding love which remains constant even when we grieve Him. He values your love toward Him and He is grieved when our hearts grow cold, yet His own love does not fail. And what is the patience of Christ but the love of the Father made manifest. How He bears with us when we would not come to Him, how He draws us with constancy when we tug against the cords. We can wish you no greater blessing than to be directed into the love of God and into the patience of our Savior, for the two cannot be divided.

We pray that you will first be rooted in that love. Salvation is through Jesus Christ alone, by His blood shed upon the cross, and to be covered in the blood of Jesus is to be cleansed, forgiven and reconciled to God through faith in Him. There is no other covering for sin and no other hope for a holy life. As you seek repair in your relationship, seek first repair with Christ, that your own heart may be renewed and your love for Him kindled afresh, for only then can you love another as you ought.

Concerning the relationship itself, we pray that the Lord will be Lord over it. His good design is that marriage be a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and that the intimacies of living together and of the marriage bed belong within that covenant. If your relationship is within that holy covenant, we pray God will strengthen it in fidelity and grace. If it is not, we pray He will give you both the grace and courage to walk in purity and in obedience to His Word, seeking His will above all else, whether that be to be led into marriage in the Lord or to be led apart according to His wisdom. We do not ask God to bless what is contrary to His Word, but we do ask Him to bless you with holiness, wisdom and a heart that desires His glory above your own happiness.

And so we pray for you now. O Lord our God, look upon this soul who cries to You. Wash and cover this life in the precious blood of Jesus Christ, forgiving sin and making the heart new. Grant repentance where repentance is needed and faith to trust in Christ alone. Pour out Your abounding love into this heart and teach patience even as Christ is patient with us. Where there is brokenness, bring the perfect restoration that only You can give, not merely a mending of outward things but a softening of hearts by Your unchangeable love. Grant clear and gracious communication, truth spoken in love, ears ready to hear and lips slow to speak. Give patience to bear with one another, love to seek the good of the other, and understanding that comes from Your Spirit. Let this relationship, and each life within it, be conformed to Your holy will and to Your design for good. Draw both souls to love Christ better than before, that whatever You ordain, You may be glorified. In the name of Jesus our only Savior we ask this, amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!
