The longing for peace in your home is a deep and right desire. God Himself wants you to live in that peace, but it’s important to understand where true peace begins. The world looks for rest in comfortable circumstances, in relationships that run smoothly, or in a sense of material security, but peace is never found there. There is only one sure foundation, and that is Jesus Christ.
The very first thing you need is peace with God. Before we can experience His calming presence in our day-to-day lives, the war within our own hearts must end. We are all born in rebellion against Him, and that inner turmoil cannot be quieted by anything we do. But Scripture tells us that He made peace through the blood of His cross. When you stop fighting and surrender your life fully to Him, trusting in that sacrifice, you are no longer His enemy. You become His child, and that settled relationship is the ground floor of all other peace.
From that place, God then offers you the peace of God, a gift that goes on to guard your heart and mind in the midst of the chaos. Notice how this gift operates. He promises to keep in perfect peace the one whose mind is stayed on Him. The turmoil in a household can feel like a troubled sea, constantly churning, but you are not meant to find calm by staring at the waves. Long-lasting peace comes not from trying to control every outcome or every person, but from fixing your eyes on the One who holds it all. When you turn your mind toward Christ and honestly say, “Lord, it is in Your hands,” you are no longer looking at the situations. You are looking at Him.
Do not put your faith in a fleeting feeling of peace. Feelings are like the weather; they change. Your faith must rest in the solid promise of His Word. Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give unto you. Not as the world gives.” The world gives a temporary truce built on compromise. Jesus gives a deep, abiding peace built on His finished work. You may wake up to a difficult day tomorrow, but the reality of His peace does not shift because His promise does not shift.
Walk in this wisdom, which is peaceable and gentle. As you sow peace in your home by the way you speak, by the grace you extend, and by your quiet trust in God, you will begin to reap the fruit of righteousness. So, right now, stop looking at the strife. Turn your heart to Him. Trust in the Lord forever, for in Him is everlasting strength. He has ordained peace for you. Receive it from Him, and let that peace, which surpasses all human understanding, begin to rule in your heart and thus fill your home.
