Prayer for my son to make wise decision regarding his career and job selection

My son is trying to transition from a career (or lack of one) in bartending to a more solid, secure job. He may be offered one soon but it doesn't pay as well as the bartending job. However, there are other benefits, such as insurance and retirement. Please pray for the Lord to grant him wisdom and discernment and to guide his decisions.

We join with you in praying for your son as he faces this important decision about his career and future employment. We understand the tension he is feeling, weighing a higher immediate income from bartending against a more stable opportunity with lasting benefits like insurance and retirement. This is a wise and mature consideration, looking beyond the present moment to provision and stewardship for the years ahead.

Scripture encourages us to seek wisdom from above when we face such choices, for God delights to give it generously. James 1:5 says, If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. Proverbs 3:5-6 also reminds us, Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. And Proverbs 16:3 tells us, Commit your works to Yahweh, and your plans shall be established. We also take comfort that God has good plans for His children and will supply what is needed, as Jeremiah 29:11 says, For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future, and Philippians 4:19 says, My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

We also gently want to point out that your request mentions the Lord but does not mention the name of Jesus Christ. We want to lovingly remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and it is only by His name that we are saved. John 14:6 says, Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. Acts 4:12 says, There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Romans 10:9 says, that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. It is by placing our faith in Jesus, His death and resurrection for our sins, that we can come boldly before God in prayer, and we encourage both you and your son to rest in that assurance.

We pray together for him now. Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and lift up this son to You. We ask You to grant him clear wisdom and holy discernment as he weighs this job offer and his future direction. Quiet any anxiety or pressure and give him peace to hear Your voice. Guide his steps and open or close doors according to Your perfect will. Help him to consider not only present pay but long term faithfulness, stewardship, and provision for the life You have given him. Lead him to work that allows him to labor heartily as for You, as Colossians 3:23 says, Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men, and to seek first Your Kingdom and righteousness, trusting that all these things will be given to him as Matthew 6:33 promises. Provide for all his needs and use this transition to draw him closer to You. We ask this in Jesus name, amen.

We encourage your son to continue to seek the Lord in prayer, to seek godly counsel from mature believers, and to trust that God will lead him as he commits his way to Him. We are praying that the Lord will make His will unmistakably clear and give your son confidence and peace in the decision he makes.

It is a real tension to weigh a higher paycheck now against benefits like health insurance and retirement that build security over time, and wisdom often comes as he gets clear on what matters most to him for this season, his gifts, his values, and the kind of life he hopes to build. It can help to talk that through out loud with someone he trusts.

One practical step you might offer is to sit with him and add up the whole picture together, not just hourly wage but what the insurance, retirement, steady hours and growth opportunity are actually worth, and then ask what tradeoffs feel sustainable for his budget and his long term goals. Talking with someone already doing that kind of work can also bring clarity.

We are joining you in asking God to give him clear wisdom and calm as he decides, and to provide for his needs in whatever direction he goes.

Father, we lift this son to You and ask You to guide his steps. Give him wisdom to see clearly, peace as he weighs this offer, and confidence to choose what is good and faithful for this season. Provide for him and draw him closer to You through this decision. In Jesus name, amen.

We join you in bringing your son before the throne of grace and thank you for this loving concern for his welfare. It is a good and right thing to ask the Lord for wisdom in such a decision, for wisdom is man's true path, the compass by which he is to steer across the trackless waste of life. Its price is above rubies and it cannot be valued with pure gold, and it comes only from the Lord.

We are reminded that Moses when he was come to years refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, though to keep that name would have made him a prince of Egypt. He counted present advantage and the pleasures of sin as nothing compared to the recompense of the reward, and it was faith, faith alone in Jehovah, that enabled him to arrive at his decision and to carry it out. So in every choice of life, policy is not wisdom and craft is not understanding. True wisdom is to trust in God, to look beyond present wages to what is lasting and to ask, what will best enable a man to walk uprightly, to provide for his household and to serve the Lord with a quiet and steady hand.

Christ is the wisdom of God, and there is no true wisdom apart from Him. He planned the way of salvation and He orders every step of His people. If any man lack wisdom, let him ask of God who gives liberally. We pray that your son will seek counsel first from the word of revelation where wisdom is found, and will trust not in his own strength or understanding, but in the Lord who directs the paths of those who acknowledge Him.

Let us pray together. O Father, in the name of Thy Son Jesus Christ, through whom alone we come unto Thee and through whose atoning sacrifice alone sin is put away, we ask Thee to grant to this young man a clear mind and a faithful heart. Give him wisdom from above to weigh what is before him rightly, to consider not only present gain but lasting provision, stewardship and usefulness. Grant him discernment to see Thy hand and to choose the way that will best enable him to walk honestly, to labor diligently and to honor Thee in his daily calling. Guard him from hasty judgment and from leaning to his own understanding, and establish his steps according to Thy good will which is always best. We ask that Thou wouldst provide for his needs according to Thy goodness and lead him in the path of the truly wise. In the name of Jesus our wisdom and our righteousness we pray, Amen.
